The Greenland Shark: The Slowest Swimmer in the World
Have you ever imagined swimming in the ocean and seeing a shark? Most people think sharks are fast and dangerous, but what if some sharks are actually slow? Let’s learn about the slowest shark in the world — the Greenland shark!
Greenland sharks live in the icy waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. They swim at just one mile per hour — slower than most human swimmers! In comparison, the fastest shark, the Shortfin mako, can swim 45 miles per hour.Scientists believe their slow speed is because of their cold habitat.Cold water slows their bodies and muscles, making it hard to move quickly.Humans, however, stay warm even in cold environments.
But there’s more! Greenland sharks are also the longest-living vertebrates. They become adults at around 150 years old and can live up to 500 years! How? Their secret is a super-slow metabolism(新陈代谢).A 500-pound Greenland shark eats less than half a pound of food daily.Since they use energy very slowly, they need little food to survive.
