Early in May, a man took me to a new home at Birtwick Park. The owner (主人) gave me the name “Black Beauty”. There, I met my friend, another horse, Ginger. One day, my owner decided to visit some friends and his groom (马夫), James, drove him.
As evening fell, we stopped at a large hotel. The groom, David, brought us into a stable (马厩) and two grooms looked after us. One groom, Towler, had a pipe (烟斗) in his mouth.
“Towler, get these horses something to eat. Put your pipe down first,” said David.
“All right,” said Towler.
At night, I felt uncomfortable and woke up. Ginger was coughing. It was dark, and I could see nothing. The stable was seriously on fire. It was full of smoke and hard to breathe. I was very afraid.
David came in and wanted to lead (引领) the horses out but they were in fear. Then he tried to pull me out, but I did not want to go. Finally, he left the stable alone.
“Black Beauty, come with me,” James ran to me and said. He always gave us hope. His voice made me relaxed. He put his scarf over my eyes and led me out of the stable. Then, he ran back inside. I shouted at him worriedly. Then I saw James coming out with Ginger.
The next morning, we felt sad when hearing that two horses died in the stable. Towler started the fire. The night before, a man saw him in the stable with a pipe in his mouth. At Birtwick Park, the rule was “no pipes in the stable” and it was a very good rule.

Have you ever started a book, read a few pages, and found that it wasn’t interesting at all If you have, you may be faced with a difficult situation: Should I keep going with the book, or put down and find something else
Some people say you should go on reading the book you’ve started. Some of the best books are full of difficult words with lots of characters and different storylines (故事情节). It’s better to keep reading, because it is an important skill to keep going and get to the end. Besides, if you stop reading halfway (在中途), how will you know how everything happens There is another reason. The book might suddenly become interesting, and there might even be a surprise change. All in all, giving up is easy, but trying to finish a difficult book is a good skill to have.
▲Cressida Cowell, a famous writer, says it’s OK to stop reading a book you don’t like. She says young readers should read books they enjoy. There are lots of wonderful books in libraries and bookstores, so spending hours and days trying hard to read a boring story is meaningless (无价值的). Nobody would choose to sit for a boring TV show. Giving up and trying a different book is the same as picking something else to watch on TV. Also, it’s important to enjoy reading and not think of it as a chore.
If you ask me, I think you shouldn’t give up after Page One. I advise you to read about 20 pages and then you can stop reading if you don’t like the characters or can’t jump into their world. Sometimes you’re just not in a place for a book, and it’s OK to put it down and visit it again later. A book you’re not loving today could be your favourite in a few years.
( )27. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The difficulties of keeping reading.
B. The benefits of doing more reading.
C. The reasons for going on the book.
D. The causes of losing interest in reading.
( )28.Which of the following is the best to fill in “▲” in Paragraph 3
A. But not everybody has the same idea.
B. Great writers also agree with the idea.
C. But young readers like interesting books.
D. There are also lots of useful reading skills.
( )29.Why does the writer give the example of watching TV
A. To show it’s fine to stop a boring book.
B. To show it’s OK to watch TV while reading.
C. To show it’s no good to try a different book.
D. To show it’s easy to stop reading when watching TV.
( )30. What’s the writer’s suggestion about reading a book you don’t like
A. Try to think of ways to enjoy the book.
B. Continue to read the book some hours later.

D. Read some pages of the book before putting it down.
