Free time is a good chance for teenagers to have fun. What about free time with parents around? Some teenagers want free play without parents' supervision(监管)while parents and experts may think differently.
Lin Tao, a middle school student, thinks teenagers should be free to play. "Last time I played with my parents around, I was nervous and just couldn't enjoy myself to the fullest," Lin says."And my friend Chen Xiaoxin has similar experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates. Everyone felt uncomfortable with his mother's supervision."
Wang Min, a mother of a 14 - year - old boy, thinks playtime needs supervision. She explains, "People usually say I like to control my kid, but that's not true. I am just worried that he will get into trouble. Some guys may have a bad influence on him, and some games like LARP (剧本杀) may mislead him. He might even get indulged in the stories and can't get back to real life."
Mr.Ma, a doctor of social studies, says it's understandable for teenagers to wish for freedom. Free play helps them to be independent. Parents can give them more space. They don't have to supervise them all the time. However, teenagers should find out the exact details(细节) about the activities before playtime. Then they can communicate with their parents and decide together whether they can go out to play alone.

What did people do to communicate in ancient times? Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns(阿尔卑斯长号角)were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So, alphorns are hard work to blow. Then why use them?Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen(牧民)used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they're mostly used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled(口哨的)language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it.
Did you know it's also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal(信号)tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy's arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.
19.What are alphorns mostly used for today? ______
A. Communicating in the mountains.
B. Calling cows for milking.
C. Sending messages down to villagers.
D. Playing a kind of music.
20.Why do the people of La Gomera use el silbo to communicate? ______
A. Because it can send messages to animals.

D. Because it is a subject for young students.
21.How did soldiers along the Great Wall get warning messages between towers? ______
A. By listening. B. By whistling. C. By shouting. D. By watching.

Sunshine does make people happier.Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long cold rainy days.Let's discover science behind sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical (化学物质) called serotonin (血清素).When you are exposed to sunlight, your body will make more serotonin.Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good spirits. At night, when there is little or no light, your body produces another chemical-melatonin (褪黑激素).It helps your body relax and will make you feel tired, which can prepare you for a good night's sleep. You should keep a good balance between these two chemicals.
However, for many people,it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness.People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That's why it is believed that those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter.People in those places are easier to get seasonal affective disorder (SAD).People with SAD usually go through bad experiences such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright artificial (人工的) lights for some time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people's life are more than those above. For example, your body produces Vitamin D(维生素 D) from sunlight, which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more science about sunlight for you to discover. So next time, when you notice the sunshine on your shoulder, take a moment to think,"Why do we love sunshine?"
23.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? ______

D. Which chemical is thought to be more important.
24.Which of the following is an opinion (观点) according to the text? ______
A. There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter.
B. People who stay indoors a lot should get outside in the sunshine.
C. The light in a house is usually less than that outside on a sunny day.
D. People's bodies produce something called Vitamin D from sunlight.
25.Jack is a person with SAD.How could he deal with his problem according to the text? ______
A. By staying indoors a lot. B. By doing some exercise.
C. By using man-made lights. D. By taking in more fresh air.
26.Why is the sentence"Why do we love sunshine?"written in the last paragraph? ______

Which is more important in your mind, looking fashionable(时髦的) or feeling comfortable? You may find many people choose style over comfort and some even go to extremes(极端)to follow fashion. But we should remember:being fashionable isn't everything. It's more important to be healthy.
Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So they start extreme diets(饮食)that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?
Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels(鞋跟). They might think high heels make them look taller. But these shoes can hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably, and they can increase the risk of falls. Some even wear tight clothes that influence blood circulation(循环), making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?
Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair colors. The material they use to change hair colors is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth risking our health, spending so much time and money?
So, let's think again what's really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being?Remember, health comes first. Instead of following extreme diets, let's eat properly and exercise every day. And instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use the time to do fun things with friends. Clothes or hairstyles don't tell us anything about a person's character. Your value is not decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.
