Treasure Library Books: Our Shared Responsibility
Recently, I’ve noticed a disturbing phenomenon in our school library. Many books have
been scribbled and defaced. Some pages are filled with random drawings, while others have
important passages underlined or crossed out. Even worse, some books have been torn.
These books are our shared assets, not personal notebooks. They deserve our respect and
care. Every mark on them not only ruins the reading experience for others but also shortens their
lifespan. Let’s treasure our library books, keeping them in good condition. After all, a well-kept
library is a reflection of our school’s culture and our own good character.

The shelter erupted into chaos as the dogs started barking frantically. The thunder terrified
them, and they jumped against their cages, howling in panic. I rushed to secure the doors, my
heart pounding. Amidst the deafening noise, I suddenly heard the shelter manager shouting,
“Where is Lily ” I froze. Pushing through the darkness, I followed the manager’s flashlight beam.
To my horror, I found Lily’s parents frantically searching near Max’s empty kennel. “He got out
during the commotion!” the mother screamed, her voice trembling with fear.
When the lights came back on ten minutes later, the scene was shocking. Max was lying on
the floor, but he wasn't hurt. Lily was curled up beside him, fast asleep, her small hand resting on
his scruffy fur. Max had his nose buried in her yellow raincoat, shielding her. It turned out that
during the blackout, Max had broken free not to escape, but to comfort the crying child. Seeing
this, the parents looked at each other, tears in their eyes. Without a word, they signed the adoption
papers right then. Max finally found his forever home, proving that sometimes, the most anxious
souls just need the right moment to show their love.石嘴山市第一中学 2025-2026 学年第二学期高三年级期中考试

Where does the inspiration come from Photographer Levon Biss got it when looking at
beetles (甲虫) from his garden. He recently bought a microscope for his son. For fun, they placed
a beetle under the lens. “It blew me away,” Biss recalls. “It was beautiful.” He wondered if he
could capture that beauty in a photograph.
Until then, Biss had made a career as a commercial photographer. Insects gave his work a
new goal. Around the world, insect populations are in decline because of pesticides (杀虫剂),
habitat loss, and climate change. Biss thought that if people could see what he saw through his son’
s microscope, they would care more about protecting insects. “I’ve got a photographic technique
and a skill,” he says. “If I can do this, I should use it for a better purpose.”
Biss turned to a type of photography that involves taking close-up pictures of small things,
like flowers or bugs. His pictures show the insects in all their wonderful, microscopic detail.
A few years ago, Biss exhibited his first insect project, Microsculpture. That’s a scientific
term. For his latest exhibition, Extinct and Endangered, Biss photographed bugs from the
collection at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. With the help of the
museum’s scientists, he selected bugs that were either extinct or endangered. What is more
wonderful is that Biss blows them up into larger-than-life images to be displayed in the exhibition.
Some are eight feet tall. “It’s a humbling experience when you’re holding an insect that’s extinct,”
Biss says. “The human species is responsible for the current insect crisis. It’s sad to know this
insect will never be on this planet again.”
Biss hopes his photographs will get people thinking the same way. “The way I work is
through pictures. I communicate visually in the way a writer communicates through words,” he
says. “Hopefully, these pictures can shake things up and get people to pay attention.”
4.What inspired Biss to take pictures of insects
A.His job as a photographer. B.The insect’s beauty he found.
C.The microscope he had bought. D.His dream to hold an exhibition.
5.What does the underlined phrase “a better purpose” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Taking close-up pictures of flowers or bugs.
B.Practicing his relevant photography skills.
C.Encouraging people to protect insects.
D.Passing on knowledge about endangered insects.
6.What can we infer about Biss’ latest exhibition
A.It’s held in the American Museum of Natural History.
B.Its photos were about common living insects.
C.It features insects from his personal collection.
D.Its pictures were much larger than normal insects.

Why are some people more motivated to handle difficult things And is there a way to
make doing difficult things easy To answer this question, we need to look at this: dopamine (多
巴胺). Dopamine is often considered a pleasure molecule (分子). But that’s not quite what it does.
Dopamine is what makes us desire things. And it’s that desire that gives us the motivation to get
up and do things.
In fact, your brain considers something more important than others mainly depending on
how much dopamine it’s expecting to get. If an activity releases too little dopamine, you won’t
have much motivation to do it. But if an activity releases a lot of dopamine, you’ll be motivated to
repeat it, over and over. So which behavior releases dopamine Any activity where you expect
there’s a possible reward releases it.
And in today’s digital society, we are flooding our brains with unnaturally high amounts of
dopamine on a daily basis, even if we don’t know it. Some examples of high dopamine behavior
include: visiting social media websites, playing video games, etc.
And you might think, “Oh so what It’s not like it’s harming me in any way.” But you’d be
wrong. Our bodies have a biological system called homeostasis (体内动态平衡). Whenever an
imbalance occurs, our body adapts to it. Basically your brain gets used to having high levels of
dopamine and those levels become your new normal. Thus you develop a dopamine tolerance.
This can be a huge problem because the things that don`t give you as much dopamine don’t
interest you any longer. That’s why people tend to prefer playing video games or surfing the
Internet, compared to studying or working on their business.
But it is possible to make doing difficult things feel easier. Separate yourself from the
unnaturally high amounts of dopamine, or at least expose yourself to it far less frequently. Only
then will normal, everyday, low dopamine activities become exciting again and you’ll be able to
do them for longer. That’s why you might want to limit your phone and computer usage, along
with other high dopamine-releasing behavior.
We are all dopamine addicts to a certain extent. And that’s a good thing because dopamine
motivates us to achieve our goals and improve ourselves. But it’s up to you to decide where you’re
going to get your dopamine. Are you going to get it from things that don’t benefit you Or are you
going to get it from working on your long-term goals The choice is yours.
8.According to the passage, dopamine is what __________.
A.determines our mindset B.motivates us to act
C.enables us to tackle difficult tasks D.causes our emotions

9.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about
A.The adaptability of our brain.
B.The problem of dopamine tolerance.
C.The imbalance of the dopamine levels.
D.The biological system called homeostasis.
10.What does the author suggest to make doing difficult things feel easier
A.Reducing the usage of digital devices.
B.Making difficult things more exciting
C.Forcing our body to adapt to dopamine.
D.Exposing ourselves more to social media.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Being addicted to dopamine benefits us.
B.Dopamine can be made use of to better ourselves.
C.Dopamine is to blame for our improper behaviour.
D.Working on long-term goals releases more dopamine.

Tiles (牌)
Suit (花色): Characters (万子) Suit: Bamboos (条子) Suit: Dots (筒子)
Mahjong has been a very popular game in China, but the rules of this game differ from
places to places. In Chengdu-Chongqing region, people usually play the same kind of Mahjong
known for interesting and exciting rules.
Mahjong uses 108 simple tiles (牌). They are divided into three suits: dots, bamboos, and
characters. There are four players in a game. At the start, each player gets 13 or 14 tiles. During
the game, they take turns to draw tiles (抓牌) and discard tiles (出牌) until completing a winning
hand.
The key rule in this kind of Majong is “Que Yi Men”. It means that at the start of the game,
each player must choose one suit to abandon. This pushes for quick decisions—do you abandon
dots, bamboos, or characters
Another important rule in this game is “Xue Zhan Dao Di” (“Bloody Battle to the End”).
That means even if one player wins, the game will continue until there is only one person left who
doesn’t have a winning hand. This creates more than one winner and endless excitement.
The basic winning hand (“Ping Hu”) is made of 4 sets and 1 pair of tiles. There are two set
types. One is “Sequence”, which is made of 3 consecutive (连续的) tiles of the same suit(1-2-3 of

Bamboos( ). The other is “Triplet”, which is made of 3 identical (相同的) tiles (e. g.
three 5 of characters ).“Pair” is made of 2 identical tiles (e. g. two 6 of Dots
)
“Ping Hu” doesn’t need much thinking to complete. More difficult is “Qing Yi Se”, where
all tiles are related to only one suit. “Qi Dui” is the most difficult, where no sets are needed and all
the tiles can be divided into seven pairs. ★ The more difficult the winning hand is, the more
points the player will get.
Because of these fun rules, this kind of Mahjong in Chengdu and Chongqing is really
popular. It brings players lots of exciting moments. Also, while playing it, people get better at
thinking clearly and making smart choices.
12.According to the passage, which statement is TRUE
A.Players get 16 tiles at the start.
B.There is only one winner in the game
C.Players don’t have to abandon one suit at the start.
D.Players draw and discard tiles until completing a winning hand.
13.Which of the following tiles can help complete a basic winning hand
A.One of Characters.
B.Five of Characters
C.Six of Characters.
D.Seven of Characters.
14.How does the writer develop the passage
A.By giving examples and making conclusions.
B.By introducing the topic, explaining the exciting rules and making conclusions.
C.By listing the good sides and bad sides of playing Mahjong.
D.By comparing different kinds of Mahjong games and showing the reasons
15.Which of the following can be put in ★
A.This really needs good luck and smart choices.
B.This can be completed quickly without special tile combinations.
C.This relies only on careful planning rather than any luck.
D.This is easier to achieve than “Qing Yi Se” with basic skills

On hot summer days, when high temperatures often reduce people’s appetite, cold desserts
tend to sound far more refreshing than a bowl of hot noodles. In ancient China, nobles enjoyed a
special cold food known as Sushan, 36 many scholars regard as the earliest form of ice
cream.
The name Sushan, meaning crispy mountain, originally 37 (come) from its
shape as well as its breakable structure. It looked like a small mountain of shaved ice 38
(combine) with milk, butter and sugar, and 39 (make) it more popular on special
occasions, it was sometimes decorated with flowers and leaves.
During the Tang Dynasty, the emperor’s court 40 (far) developed this dessert.
Milk was sweetened, sometimes thickened with flour, and then iced through advanced 41
(cool) methods. Metal containers holding the mixture were often placed in ice with saltpeter (硝
石), 42 substance that lowers the freezing point of water. This technique made it
possible for the upper class to enjoy cold dishes 43 the fact that the weather itself was
not that cold.
Although Sushan was not exactly the same as modern ice cream, it shared several essential
characteristics, and 44 (present) in a partly frozen state occasionally. It reflected not

only the 45 (innovate) of ancient Chinese people, but also the special status that

Every Saturday morning, I volunteered at the local animal shelter. My job was to walk the
dogs and socialize with them to increase their chances of adoption. I loved the routine, but one
dog, a scruffy terrier named Max, always made me sad. He was too energetic and anxious;
families would pet him, but they always chose the calmer dogs.
One rainy afternoon, as I was cleaning Max’s kennel, a young couple entered the shelter
with their 5-year-old daughter, Lily. Lily was wearing a bright yellow raincoat and holding a
stuffed animal. As they walked down the aisle, the other dogs barked and jumped, trying to get
attention. Max, however, did something different. He sat quietly and gently wagged his tail when
Lily approached.
Lily stopped in front of Max’s cage. Instead of screaming like other children, she pressed
her small hand against the bars and smiled. Max cautiously reached out his nose and sniffed her
fingers. A spark of connection seemed to fly between them. The parents looked surprised but
pleased. “He’s different,” the father said to the shelter manager. “He doesn’t seem desperate.”
I felt a glimmer of hope for Max. Maybe this was his chance. But then, a sudden
thunderclap shook the building. The lights flickered and went out, plunging the shelter into
darkness. The peaceful atmosphere vanished instantly.
