Lion dance is an important part of Foshan’s traditional culture with a history of over 1,000 years. Foshan is known as the “Hometown of Lion Dance”. Its lion dance combines martial arts, music and dance, forming a unique art style that is popular both in China and around the world.
Foshan lion dance has two styles: Southern Lion and Northern Lion. The Southern Lion is more popular and influential. It is also called the “Canton Lion”. It has bright colors, lively expressions and strong movements. Each lion head is hand-made by skilled workers. With beautiful embroidery and decoration, every lion head is a piece of art.
In the past, lion dance was mainly performed during festivals and celebrations to pray for good luck and drive away evil spirits.

Today, it has become a cultural symbol of Foshan. It appears in many important events and international cultural exchanges. Many young people in Foshan are learning lion dance from the older generation.
The Foshan government has taken steps to support lion dance culture. It has set up training courses in schools and communities, helped teams join national and international competitions, and included lion dance in the list of intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产). These efforts protect the traditional art and make it popular among young people.
As Foshan develops, lion dance will pass on to future generations and shine even brighter. Foshan lion dance is more than a performance. It shows the spirit of courage, unity and hard work of the people in Foshan.
