第 6页/共 19页
All you need to do is to book a plane ticket to Peru (秘鲁). The South American country is home to wonderful
natural sights, and the most famous one is Rainbow Mountain. Millions of tourists come for it every year.
Rainbow Mountain is also called Mountain of Seven Colors. As its name shows, the mountain has different
colors. Millions of tourists come here every year. But what makes the mountain look like it is painted in yellows,
greens, reds and purples The reason lies in the ice. When it began to melt (融化), the water mixed with minerals
(矿物质) in the ground, turning the earth into the many colors you see today.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, you’d better visit it during warmer months when there will be less rain
or snow. The best time begins in March and lasts nine months, when there will be blue skies and fine weather. At
the same time, visit it in the morning or during evening hours, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very
sunny days will probably stop you from taking nice photos. The other important thing to remember is that the
mountain is about 5,200 meters high above sea level, so prepare enough water and take your time.

①Have you ever visited any traditional Chinese gardens They look more like natural sights than some
Western gardens. They have a long history. In the past, there were two main types of gardens: imperial (皇家的)
第 7页/共 19页
gardens and private (私人的) gardens. Imperial gardens were for the use of the emperor and his family. Private
gardens were built by important officials or wealthy businessmen. Both types of gardens were mainly built for
hunting and resting.
②The Summer Palace in Beijing is China’s most famous imperial garden. It covers an area of about 3,000,000
m2. Kunming Lake takes up almost three-fourths of the garden’s total area. There are over 3,000 ancient buildings
and a large number of plants in the garden. You can also see more than 40,000 valuable works from each ancient
period. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the “Imperial Garden Museum”.
③As for private gardens, the most famous one is the Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政园) in Suzhou. It
has an area of only 52,000 m2. It is quite small compared with imperial gardens, but it’s beautiful. When you are
standing in any corner of the garden, it all looks like a lifelike picture. And the whole garden looks different in
different seasons.
④The traditional Chinese gardens have been designed to look naturally formed. Mountains and waters, trees
and flowers, houses and towers are well-organized. They don’t look crowded together at all. In fact, Chinese
gardens are in some ways much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The two have influenced and
developed alongside one another. Both of them show the importance of nature in Chinese culture.

A. The owners of Chinese gardens.
B. The history of Chinese gardens.
C. Two main kinds of Chinese gardens.
D. Two main reasons for building gardens.
39. What can we know about traditional Chinese gardens according to the passage
A. The things in the gardens were not formed properly.
B. The private gardens in Suzhou are famous for the size.
C. They are different from traditional Chinese landscape paintings.
D. They were mainly built for the owners to hunt and rest.
40. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
第 8页/共 19页
41. How does the writer describe the two kinds of gardens in Paragraph 2 and 3
A. By explaining reasons and describing problems.
B. By listing numbers and comparing the gardens.
C. By asking a question and reporting a result.
D. By giving numbers and choices.

What keeps volcanoes (火山) from erupting (喷发) A new study found that an underground “lid (盖子)” does
its job at the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park in the western US.
The Yellowstone supervolcano is one of the few that can have “super eruptions”, said the US Geological
Survey. The ash (灰烬) from these eruptions can go 30 to 50 kilometers into the sky, three to five times as high as
most planes fly.
Volcanoes erupt when hot, melted (融化的) rock, called magma (岩浆), reaches Earth’s surface. The melting
takes place inside Earth because of plate (板块) movement. Since magma is lighter than solid (固态的) rock, it
rises. As this happens, gas bubbles form inside it. If the magma is thin, it flows out easily as lava (熔岩). But if it’s
thick, the gas bubbles get stuck, causing pressure to build up and even explode (爆炸).
The “lid” at Yellowstone is made of magma that is 3.5 to 4 km below the northeastern part of the Yellowstone
caldera (火口). This magma cap has tiny holes that let out some of the gas from time to time, keeping the pressure
under control.
Scientists made the finding by sending safe seismic waves (地震波) across the national park and picking them
up with 650 sensors (传感器). With so many sensors, scientists got a much clearer image (图像) of what’s going on
underground.
Even though a big Yellowstone eruption seems impossible for thousands of years, the study helps understand
its future. Also, “the finding is important for everything from geothermal energy (地热能 ) to keeping CO2
underground,” said Brandon Schmandt, a lead scientist.
42. What is a supervolcano
第 9页/共 19页
A. A volcano that never erupts. B. A volcano that sends ashes into the sky.
C. A volcano with huge eruptions. D. A volcano found in big mountains.
43. What is actually the “lid” at the Yellowstone supervolcano
A. A big gas bubble. B. A huge solid rock.
C. A thin layer of lava. D. A thick layer of magma.
44. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. How scientists found the magma cap.
B. How scientists predict volcano eruptions.
C. How scientists cool down large volcanoes.
D. How scientists study the formation of volcanoes.
45. According to Brandon Schmandt, what is the importance of the finding
A. Understanding Earth’s plate movement.
B. Helping the national park stay safe in the future.
C. Helping people make use of the geothermal energy.
D. Studying the influence of volcanic activity on the environment.

The Fisherman and His Soul is a short story from Oscar Wilde’s collection The Happy Prince and Other Tales.

net and he falls in love with her. The fisherman learns he cannot be with the mermaid because he has a human soul.
The fisherman then tries to send away his human soul. The fisherman learns from a witch how to send his soul
away. He is then free to be with his mermaid. His soul is alone in the world. He travels the world. Each year he
comes back to the fisherman and tells him about his travels.
One of the themes of the story is temptation (诱惑 ). In the story, the mermaid tempts the fisherman with
stories of the sea. The fisherman tempts the witch to help him send away his soul. And his soul tries to tempt the
fisherman to leave the mermaid.
But the main theme of the story is love. Love is more important than anything. The soul cannot tempt the
fisherman because the fisherman’s love is too strong. And in the end, we discover that one cannot live without love.
The Fisherman and His Soul is an exotic story with Oriental and Eastern influences. There are also mermaids,

A letter from Xishuangbanna Rainforest
Dear teenagers,
I’m a peacock living in the Xishuangbanna Rainforest. It lies in the south of Yunnan Province. It’s a beautiful
home for countless plants and animals, and it also keeps the natural balance of the earth.
Our rainforest has amazing views and different kinds of lovely wild animals. As for me, I have colorful
feathers. I mainly feed on insects and plants. I often walk near rivers in the daytime and rest in trees after sunset.
But now our home is in danger. More trees are cut down, and our living space is becoming smaller. I feel
worried and sad.
I hope you can learn more about our rainforest, love it and try your best to protect it.
I’m looking forward to seeing my hometown become better and better!
Your friend,
Peacock
