At the beginning of every school year, a new crop of 15-year-olds pile into my classroom. Some are excited for the new year, while others are inactive. Regardless of their attitude, I’m always awkward to admit I am scared. Just fake (假装) it until you make it, my fellow teachers advised.
However, no matter how much I faked it, and how many years spent teaching the same course, the fear has continued. As the relationships with my students deepen, I naturally grow comfortable, but even then, I feel nervous when something unexpected happens in class. One might expect that this would cause me to be ashamed, to practice even harder, or to study public speaking methods. But I have learned another way.
This year, I was given a group of 10th graders, and on the first day of class, over half shared in their self-introduction paragraph that they were shy and afraid to speak up in class. My replies on their papers were personal: Did you notice how I held my hands to keep them from shaking today Did you hear how my voice trembled when I noticed everyone looking at me
And slowly but surely, my students began to open up about the root of their fears. When they saw me, their experienced teacher, trembling, they had more courage during their presentation. When they heard me stumble (磕绊) over my words, they accepted their own pauses trying to find the right ones.
Fear of public speaking rarely goes away completely. So many students are muted by it in the classroom, but we as teachers have the chance to encourage by leading with empathy (同情) instead of pushing or disappointment. That starts with finding the courage to be honest about our own flaws (瑕疵). We must then teach ourselves, and by extension, our students to reframe those flaws as strengths rather than weaknesses.

While safety improvements might have been made to our streets in recent years, transport studies also show declines in pedestrian (行人) mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there’s too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school, so they pack them into the car instead.
Dutch authors Thalia Verkade and Marco to Brümmelstreet are bothered by facts like these. In their new book Movement: How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives, they call for a rethink of our streets and the role they play in our lives.
Life on city streets started to change decades ago. Whole neighbourhoods were destroyed to make way for new road networks and kids had to play elsewhere. Some communities fought back. Most famously, a Canadian journalist who had moved her family to Manhattan in the early 1950s led a campaign to stop the destruction of her local park. Describing her alarm at its proposed (提议的) replacement with an expressway (高速公路), Jane Jacobs called on her mayor (市长) to champion “New York as a comfortable place to live, and not just rush through.” Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well.
Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly. In Australia we now have over twenty million cars for just over twenty-six million people, among the highest rate of car ownership in the world.
We invest a lot in roads that help us rush through, but we fail to account for the true costs. At the 6th Digital China Summit in Fuzhou, officials and experts said China will increase resources to build 5G networks, expand 5G use in different fields and promote 6G research and development (R&D). This summit has become an important platform for sharing digital development experience and promoting international cooperation.
Zhao Ce from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said China has built the world’s largest and most advanced 5G network. By the end of March this year, the number of 5G base stations in China had passed 2.64million. He added the ministry will continue to build 5G networks in order, speed up its industrial use, push forward 6G R&D and strengthen international communication on 5G technology, standards and application.

How have you been recently I’m more than delighted to share with you a meaningful experience I had last weekend. I took part in a Chinese classic reading activity, which left a deep impression on me.
In the activity, we read some famous ancient poems and articles, enjoying the beauty of Chinese language and literature. Guided by our teachers, we learned to read with proper emotion and gestures. Though it was challenging at first, we kept practicing and made remarkable progress.
The activity not only enriched my holiday life but also deepened my understanding of traditional Chinese culture. It helped me develop a good reading habit as well. Looking forward to your reply.

With the money, they bought medicine for his mother and sent the baby to daycare. Gradually, his mother got better day by day. That night, Jamie finished his homework carefully for the first time in weeks, his heart full of gratitude. When he handed his homework to Ms. Carter the next day, the classroom was filled with warm light, which not only brought hope to Jamie’s family but also taught him the power of kindness.
