I grew up in a small town in Coahuila, Mexico. As a child, I dreamed of finding a good job
in a big city. However, one visit to my grandmother’s home changed everything. There was a big
yard next to her house. When I stood there, various plants and animals were around me. Just then,
a thirst of knowing more of them filled my mind. From then on I spent more and more time in the
yard, exploring and observing plants and animals. That curiosity towards nature became my
guiding star and the thought of being a biologist began to form in my mind.
My hometown had limited education choices for college degrees, so I applied to a
university in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Getting my parents’ support was my first challenge —
they were unsure where I was going to work as a wildlife biologist and thought it was not a safe
choice. In a way, they were right. Finding such a job is not easy.
For most jobs that require a lot of fieldwork, men were usually preferred over women due
to cultural beliefs that women are more likely to be hurt. But my experience as a field scientist
built my confidence and prove those ideas wrong. Honestly, I always had the fear of danger, but
that did not stop me following my dream.
Before becoming a mum, I heard that a successful woman in a science job shouldn’t have
children. I never agree with that idea. After years of being a mum, I can say that it can be done. It
is never easy, and takes a lot of efforts, but it is very worthwhile.
My advice to young wildlife biologists: it is more important to know exactly what you do
not want in your life than to know the exact things you want. Stay on the path and allow some
flexibility (灵活) , and I promise you will be OK.

In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. Platforms like
Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter allow us to connect with friends, share experiences, and stay
informed. But while social media offers many benefits, it also has a dark side.
One of the biggest concerns is the impact on mental health. Studies have shown that
excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.
Constantly comparing ourselves to others’ curated posts — perfect vacations, flawless bodies, or
successful careers — can erode self-esteem. Additionally, cyberbullying has become a
widespread problem, especially among teenagers.
On the other hand, social media has the power to foster global communities and drive social
change. Movements like #MeToo and #ClimateStrike gained momentum through social media,
giving a voice to marginalized groups and raising awareness about important issues. It also allows
people to stay connected with loved ones across the world, bridging geographical distances.
The key is to use social media mindfully. Setting time limits, curating a positive feed, and
prioritizing real-life interactions can help mitigate its negative effects. Like any tool, social media
is neither entirely good nor bad — it depends on how we choose to use it.

Self-driving cars are just around the corner. Such vehicles will make getting from one place
to another safer and less stressful. They also could cut down on traffic, reduce pollution and limit
accidents. But how should driverless cars handle emergencies People disagree on the answer.
And that might put the brakes on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some pedestrians in the
road. Even with braking, it’s too late to avoid a crash. So the car’s artificial intelligence must
decide whether to take a sharp turn. To save the pedestrians, should the car swerve(突然转向)off
the road or swerve into oncoming traffic What if such options would likely kill the car’s
passengers
Researchers used online surveys to study people’s attitudes about such situations with
driverless cars. Survey participants mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to
protect the most people. That included swerving into walls (or otherwise sacrificing their
passengers) to save a larger number of pedestrians. But there is a dilemma . Those same surveyed
people want to ride in cars that protect passengers at all costs—even if the pedestrians would now
end up dying. Jean Bonnefon is a psychologist at the Toulouse School of Economics in France. He
试卷第 1页,共 3页
and his colleagues reported their findings in Science.
“Autonomous cars can completely change transportation”, says study coauthor Iyad
Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral dilemma that could slow its acceptance.
Makers of driverless cars are in a tough spot, Bonnefon’s group warns. Most buyers would
want their car to be programmed to protect them in preference to other people. However,
regulations might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving
the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers. If so, all the
potential benefits of driverless cars would be lost.
Compromises might be possible, Kurt Gray says. He is a psychologist at the University of
North Carolina. He thinks that even if all driverless cars are programmed to protect their
passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those vehicles might be dangerous to
pedestrians on rare occasions. But they “won’t speed, won’t drive drunk and won’t text while
driving, which would be a win for society.”
29.The underlined word “challenge” in paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A.people’s negative attitudes towards self-driving cars
B.the technical problems that self-driving cars have
C.how self-driving cars cope with sudden dangerous events
D.how self-driving cars reduce traffic accidents
30.According to the text, online surveys show that ________.
A.self-driving cars’ artificial intelligence needs improvement
B.the busy traffic may be a problem for self-driving cars
C.self-driving cars should be designed to protect drivers
D.people are in a moral dilemma about driverless cars
31.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A.Regulations are in favour of drivers.
B.Self-driving car makers are in a difficult situation.
C.Most people dislike self-driving cars now.
D.The potential benefits of driverless cars are ignored.
32.What is Kurt Gray’s attitude toward self-driving cars

On the Spot: When the Spotlight Breaks Trust
Most of us have been put on the spot in a number of different situations, whether at work or
among a group of friends. 33 However, you just aren’t ready to give, whether it’s because
you don’t know or you’re not willing to share. It is really embarrassing.
We are no stranger to putting others on the spot ourselves, usually by accident. Perhaps we
ask a sensitive question of a friend in a group setting, or try to push a quiet coworker to share their
answers in a meeting. 34
Putting someone on the spot though, whether intentional or not, has the effect of destroying
trust in a relationship. The key to maintaining the trust in a relationship is developing your
emotional intelligence. 35 As Krauss wrote in a recent Psychology Today article, “A sign
that you’re not as sensitive as you could be when you pressure people is that others try to stay
away from you to the extent that they can.”
36 Are people born with the ability to develop a high level of emotional
intelligence, or is that something they are taught Although the answer is probably a little bit of
both, strengthening our emotional intelligence is definitely something we can all do. 37
Many of us have developed them with time to strengthen our emotional intelligence, whether with
the help of a professional or through our own trial-and-error.
A.People are fed up with the dull and long meetings.
B.It can help us understand and handle a confusing situation.
C.A core part of that is being able to perceive how others feel.
D.Sets of eyes turn toward you with the expectations for an answer.
E.There is a debate on whether emotional intelligence is native or not.
F.Listening, empathizing, and reflecting are strategies often acquired later in life.
G.We may even unknowingly touch a nerve with a family member at a casual gathering.

Let’s get something straight right off the top. I’m not exactly the biggest guy on the hockey
team when I was in my middle school. Okay, the truth is that I’m the smallest player in the league,
Hockey is a fast game. It’s like soccer, except it takes place on the ice and you use sticks and a
puck (冰球) instead of a soccer ball. The fact that I weigh half as much as some players means
these guys can hold me off using just one arm. I supposed I shouldn’t be on the team.
My coach calls me the “Angry Chihuahua”. The first time my coach called me that, I didn’t
like it at all. I mean, who wants to be named after a small Mexican dog But later, I realized he
was praising me. One time, I was trying to get the puck from a huge player. I couldn’t approach,
so I kept switching from one side to the other. I guess that was quite a funny sight because when I
got back to the bench, the coach said I looked like an angry Chihuahua, I didn’t like it at that
moment. However, something happened a few days later, and now, I wear this name with pride.
In fact, the team laughed when the coach called me the Angry Chihuahua. I pretended to
laugh, but inside I was hurt. One player who didn’t laugh was Eric. He went out of his way to
make me feel at home on the team.
A week later, we played against another team. They were all huge and one of them was the
biggest in the league, I knew one big hit from him could leave me injured. In the game, I was

David was born in 1959 and grew up in Spokane, Washington. He has liked baseball and drawing

junior high school, David knew that he wanted to be an artist who could play baseball. He chose
the Art Center College of Design in California. After obtaining a degree in fine art, he went to
New York, where he continued to paint his illustrations. He first painted some politically colored
illustrations for New York Times, Time and Rolling Stone. Later, by chance, he drew illustrations
for Julius Lester’s How Many Spots Does a Jaguar Have This book won Newbery Medal. In
1994, David created How Georgie Radbourn Saved Baseball, which was the first book he
completed independently. And it was the best picture book of the year in New York Times.
David’s dad also paints pictures for medical books, and his grandma is a designer of fashion
bags. Overall, David’s mom has the greatest influence on his creation. She liked to save her son’s
childhood paintings. She sent those childish pictures to David, unexpectedly inspiring him to

I do believe I’m an ideal candidate. With an outgoing and cheerful personality, I can get

64.I saw the guy laughing, and I just couldn’t take it! So angry was I that I dashed towards him,
yelling at him at the top of my lungs. The guy, who was twice the size of me, turned around and
pushed me. I went flying backwards, sliding along the ice. I hit the ice so hard that I couldn’t
breathe. But when I looked up, my teammates had all come over to pull him off me. They shoved
him away and then he was given a ten-game suspension.
From that moment on, my teammates always treated me with the greatest respect. I think
they were shocked to see that someone so small would dare to stand up to such a huge bully,
which won me their admiration. Also, Eric treated me like his brother from then on as he told me
gratefully, “A friend in need is a friend in deed.” Ever since then, I’ve learned to control my
emotions, but everyone in the league heard the story. They all know that although I may be small,
I don’t give up. I guess it’s not so bad being known as the Angry Chihuahua after all.
