The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to interact in two different languages they wish to share and sharpen their skills on a weekly basis. Students document short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.
Things to note:
● The sign-up and registration process is as follows:
Students register by stating the languages they can share and languages they are interested in learning.
Based on the information entered by each student, potential pairs are identified.
Proficiency (熟悉) levels are confirmed through coursework or placement tests.
Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme.
● Requirements for completion:
One welcoming period on the second Friday of the term
18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
Progress reports for all pair meetings on a weekly basis
A minimum of three pair-teacher meetings
Reminders:
Signing up for the programme is no guarantee of the subsequent enrolment or a secured place. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. The pairing process involves a range of variables; consequently, not all students who sign up will be matched with a partner and continued to the program participation.

37-year-old Swedish actor Timothy Pilotti uses physical comedy to bring cultural exchanges to the stage. Peking Opera has been a game changer for him, which led him to China and shaped enthusiasm for cultural exchanges.
Pilotti had a childhood love for a Chinese film. “His films blended a lot of acrobatics (杂技) and comedy into the fight scenes,” Pilotti says. Unlike kung fu, primarily a martial art, Peking Opera caught his opinion as a theatrical form designed for the stage with unique way of moving and fighting.
Pilotti decided to become an actor at an early age, studying at acting schools and majoring in physical theater at a Finnish university. During the third year in university, he got the first opportunity to study Peking Opera in China. “Some of my classmates went to India, for example, but my dream was to go to China — it was a no-brainer,” he says. In 2009, he and two other students arrived at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing to study Peking Opera for six months.
Although he had no Chinese language skills or background in Peking Opera, teachers from the academy helped him grasp the essence of the performing art form through rigorous teaching and setting high standards.
Traditional Chinese stories enlighten Pilotti. He has created two theatre pieces in recent years, including a story about the Monkey King, the omnipotent (全能的) character from the novel Journey to the West. In the Monkey King, Pilotti embodies the character’s tangibly characteristics through Peking Opera movements, inspiring his young audience members to be themselves. “The Monkey King is a famous character with many adaptations, so the kids already know a bit about him. But, when they can see the character closely in the show, it can be a surprise.”
“My dream now is to do more cultural exchanges and maybe create a show where Chinese Peking Opera and Swedish actors perform together.” Pilotti says.
24. What can we know about Peking Opera and Pilotti from the text
A. Peking Opera is a martial art in Pilotti’s eyes.
B. Peking Opera completely changed Pilotti’s life.
C. Pilotti didn’t like Peking Opera at all as a child.
D. Pilotti grew up with a Peking Opera background.
25. What did Pilotti mean by saying “it was a no-brainer” in paragraph 3
A. It was a tough decision because he lacked Chinese skills.
B. It was an obvious choice as he dreamed of going to China.
C. He made the decision without any prior knowledge of China.
D. It required extensive brainpower to understand Peking Opera.
26. What kind of person is Pilotti
A. Original and dedicated. B. Adaptable and rigorous.
C. Passionate and considerate. D. Committed and conventional.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Monkey King: A Huge Success
B. A Swede Acts on Passion for Peking Opera
C. A Swede’s Journey into Chinese Martial Arts
D. Pilotti’s Childhood Dream: From Finland to China

To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the sun’s radiation, new research shows.
The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). The flowers won’t look any different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV pigments as a darker color, which could be confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers to land on.
The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from harmful radiation, Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team hoped to determine if changes in pigments were a result of environmental change and if so, what are the plants responding to The team collected dried, pressed plants across North America, Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42 different species dating back to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals from each species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.
The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers’ structure. Flowers with open, exposed pollen had more UV-absorbing pigments when ozone levels were low and radiation was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels.
As climate change continues to intensify, these changes in flowers’ color can affect plant-insect interactions. When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. “This has a negative influence on plant reproduction,” Koski says.
28.What is the cause of flowers’ color changing according to the research
A. The impact of the climate crisis. B. The loss of natural habitats.
C. The harm of nuclear radiation. D. The thickening of the ozone layer.
29.How did Koski’s team get their findings
A. By collecting photographs of flowers from different species.
B. By analyzing how levels of UV pigments change over time.
C. By collecting abundant samples from various species.
D. By analyzing historic local temperature and ozone level data.
30.What can we learn about the change in pigments
A. It exists in flowers with exposed pollen only.
B. It responds to temperatures and sea levels.
C. It remains the same regardless of species.
D. It varies depending on the flowers’ structure.
31.What is Koski’s attitude toward the change in flowers’ color
A.Concerned. B.Indifferent. C.Unclear. D.Optimistic.
D
In the past few years, consumers have become more aware of the importance of sustainability in fashion. They want to know how products are made to ensure that their purchases aren’t negatively impacting the environment. This shift in consumer behavior has made traceable (可追踪的) cotton very popular with fashion brands, as it ensures the cotton comes from farms that advocate for sustainable practices — and, in turn, allows the brands to market their products as such. To meet this demand, farmers are increasingly performing sustainable practice — things like promoting biodiversity and minimizing harmful pesticides.
Moving a farm to sustainable agriculture can be challenging, however. “Traceability covers all activities during the growing season through to harvest, which largely relies on date collection,” says Raymond Daniels, manager for BASF’s agricultural solutions. Without using technology, this data process can become troublesome. Farmers are not experts, says Daniels, and often don’t have the time needed to capture everything. To ensure the traceability of their cotton, more farmers are turning to BASF’s e3 cotton program.
Aside from data tracking, farmers have the added benefit. “Once the cotton is harvested, we take the Permanent Bale ID (issued by the USDA) and attach that to the data captured in our platform,” says Daniels. “we can trace everything back to the field in which it was grown with the ID.” When brands know the cotton they are buying is from a sustainable farm, they are often willing to pay more for it.
Mark and Cali Noland have seen the benefits firsthand. The traceability provided by the e3 program has opened up new opportunities for them—including direct partnerships with clothing manufacturers. “In the past, we’ve been totally at the mercy of what the market is doing,” Cali says. Now, by employing technology, they’re able to negotiate a price that reflects the actual value of their sustainably-produced cotton. “With our cotton, we’ve been able to make individual relationships with some fashion brands who want to know what practices you are doing on the farm for the quality of their product,” says Cali.
32. Why do farmers tend to adopt sustainable agriculture
A. Because consumers favor the cotton products.
B. Because sustainable practices guarantee the quality.
C. Because farmers want to satisfy the market requirements.
D. Because the fashion brands grow environment-conscious.
33. What is BASF’s e3 cotton program aimed at
A. Exploring new market for cotton farmers.
B. Sparing farmers the laborious work on land.
C. Adjusting the process of agricultural production.
D. Providing traceable information of signed cotton.
34. What benefits do the farmers gain through e3 program
A. Easy network access.
B. Cooperation with manufacturers.
C. Independent pricing.
D. Output expansion.
35. What is the suitable title for the text
A. The Rise of Traceable Cotton: Technology Enables Sustainable Farming
B. The Sustainable Agriculture: Unavoidable Changes Are on the Way
C. BAST’s e3 Program: Cooperation Boosts Confidence
D. The Greener Fashion: Quality Always Comes First

Many people have fallen into the habit of neglecting to express gratitude to others and failing to take moments to appreciate the invisible yet wonderful aspects of life. 36 However, there are several effective tips to help cultivate a habit of gratitude.
Practice mindfulness. It is highly beneficial for expressing gratitude, as it enables individuals to fully engage with and appreciate the present moment, according to Michelle Maidenberg, a therapist in private practice in Harrison, New York, who also teaches a graduate course in Mindfulness Practice at New York University. 37
Keep a gratitude journal. 38 The idea is that you’ll get in the habit of noticing those things you appreciate more regularly throughout the day and more frequently.
39 Notice the things that are around you that are important to you or meet your values. For example, if you love nature, take a minute to enjoy when the sun is out.
Give back. Practicing gratitude can also be giving back through charity work and service for others. Gratitude isn’t just about speaking, it’s in the doing. One example is to look for the good that can come out of a crisis, such as collecting supplies for people affected by a hurricane.
Reframe. Reframing your mindset is a powerful way to bring more gratitude into your life. 40 For example, instead of saying or thinking “I have to go to work today,” reframe it as “I get to go to work today and use my skills and talents.”
A. So practicing mindfulness can help.
B. Write a thank-you note to someone every week.
C. Take the time to appreciate what you truly enjoy.
D. Toward the end of the day write down your daily gratitude.
E. And you do this by changing the way you speak or the way you think.
F. Avoid discussing negative experiences to focus only on positive things.
G. This lack of appreciation harms relationships and blocks life’s small pleasures.

Tiffany Massey had just moved to the state of Maine last year and lived alone. She enjoyed the beach near the neighbourhood and jogging (慢跑) around in the evenings. It was during one of those evenings that she noticed Mrs Johnson. She’d never forget their first meeting.
Mrs Johnson had a dog named Max. Max almost attacked her one evening if it hadn’t been for Mrs Johnson. “Stop now, or you won’t get any food tonight!”she yelled at the dog from a distance.
“I’m sorry. Max didn’t mean it. He just doesn’t like strangers! You’d better stay away from him!”Mrs Johnson apologized, walking up to her. “Well...”Before Tiffany could say anything, the elderly woman and the dog walked away.
Days later, she was jogging along the beach again when Max barked (狗叫) at her like their first meeting. Tiffany tried to change her route (路线) to escape him. This happened even every time she went for a jog later, and Tiffany had had enough of him!
With weeks flying, things changed a bit as they met more often. Max no longer barked at Tiffany but followed her instead, obviously friendly. Gradually, Tiffany got used to jogging on the beach with Max running after her, and Mrs Johnson watching them run. And they began their conversation and Tiffany began to know about Mrs Johnson, who was in her late seventies and lived alone as well. Or rather, with Max, she was not alone.
One day, Tiffany went for her usual jog, but she didn’t see Max. She felt a bit upset that he wasn’t following her. However, in the following days, Mrs Johnson and Max still didn’t show up on the beach. “Where has he gone Did they move somewhere ” Tiffany wondered. Mrs Johnson and Max had become a part of her daily routine, and their sudden absence left her uneasy.

Dear fellow students,
Recently, we have noticed that an increasing number of students are relying too much on AI tools to complete their assignments, which has led to some negative consequences, such as a decline in academic integrity and critical thinking.
To address the issues, we should use AI as a supplementary tool to enhance learning rather than a replacement for our own efforts, which may violate academic integrity principles fundamental to our education and result in the lack of originality and creativity. Additionally, it is of great significance for us to critically evaluate the information generated by AI rather than accept it blindly. Otherwise, we might be deprived of the ability to think critically.
Let’s make a conscious effort to use artificial intelligence in a reasonable and responsible manner. By doing so, we can make the most of AI technology while maintaining our academic integrity and personal growth. Your effort counts!

With curiosity, Tiffany decided to figure out what had happened. The next day, she went to knock Mrs Johnson’s door, however, receiving no response. Feeling more concerned, she then asked around the neighborhood. A neighbour mentioned that Mrs Johnson suffered a heart attack several days ago and had been brought to hospital. Tiffany’s heart sank. She quickly called the local hospital and finally found Mrs Johnson, who was resting in her hospital bed, looking weak but delighted to see Tiffany. Mrs Johnson said she missed Max terribly, who had to be left at home alone.
Tiffany offered to take care of Max until Mrs Johnson recovered. Mrs Johnson was more than grateful for her kindness. Over the next few weeks, Tiffany balanced her daily routine with caring for Max. She walked him to the beach, and he quickly connected with Tiffany. She even brought Max to visit Mrs Johnson, whose health gradually improved. When Mrs Johnson finally returned home, Tiffany and Max were there to welcome her. After that, Tiffany, Mrs Johnson and Max were often seen walking along the beach together. Tiffany realized that her move to Maine had brought her more than just a change of scenery — it had given her a new family.
