You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression—this was the theme of this year’s International Public Speaking Competition (IPSC).Thirty-three young speakers aged 16 to 20 from around the world gathered at The English Speaking Union to tell their stories, including Wu Dongxu, 19, a student from China.Wu Dongxu saw the differences and similarities between Chinese and foreign cultures through the competition.
Apart from the obvious differences in food, transportation and climate, what impressed Wu most was the different styles of Chinese and foreign public speaking.
Although still a teen, Wu is no stranger to the public speaking podium (讲台).He has participated in many speaking competitions since 2017.But on the stage of the IPSC, speakers had no podium to stand behind. They just had to face the audience.
“This was the first time that I had given a speech without a podium, which made me realize how important eye contact and body language are,”said Wu.“It also gave me more freedom to show more information with my body language instead of just with words.”
Another difference that caught Wu’s attention was the evaluation criteria (评价标准). To his surprise, in the IPSC, accents and grammatical mistakes are not considered in the evaluation process. It is the story itself that matters most instead of pronunciation, fluency and quality of language.
“Audiences are eager to hear powerful stories, no matter where they are from. That’s because the emotions expressed in them are shared by all human beings although there are the cultural differences,” said Wu.“Diversity (多样性), respect, tolerance and understanding—these are what the IPSC really wants to stress and spread.”
24.How many students gathered at The English Speaking Union this year according to the passage
A.16. B.19. C.20. D.33.
25.What left Wu Dongxu the deepest impression
A.The food culture.

A.Speakers are allowed to use podiums.
B.Only adults can take part in the IPSC.
C.Body language plays an important part.
D.Language quality is considered the most important.
27.What is Wu Dongxu’s attitude towards the IPSC
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful.
C.Worried. D.Opposed.

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is moving digital.
To reflect this tendency, many mobile budgeting (预算) apps for children have sprung up worldwide:GoHenry,Osper, and Gimi,to name but a few. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents.Parents can add money to children’s accounts, set limits and monitor transactions (交易).Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts (概念),such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For instance, the Swedish app Gimi—with 1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can store money.Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing household tasks. The account is attached to a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.
Haglund,CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits.“You don’t become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says.
But Catherine Winter, managing director of financial capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns that while digital tools can help, there needs to be a more structured approach to financial education. The area should “have regular classroom time and ideally should be taught as a stand-alone subject,” she said.“Children would then have the right context and foundation to get the most out of both the apps and their money.”
28.What contributed to the appearance of mobile budgeting apps
A.Digital money.
B.The increase of pocket money.
C.Children’s preference.
D.The inconvenience of piggy banks.
29.What do we know about the Swedish app Gimi
A.It is not well received in Sweden.
B.It pays children interest as they save.
C.It pays children for doing housework.
D.It can teach children concepts related to money.
30.What is Winter’s attitude towards digital tools
A.Doubtful. B.Objective.
C.Appreciative. D.Uncaring.
31.What’s the passage mainly about
A.The importance of financial education.
B.The tendency towards a cashless society.
C.The rise of money management education.
D.The popularity of the digital budgeting apps.

A new center at the Stanford School of Engineering will fund artificial intelligence(AI) in the service of space science, exploration, and business.
The Center for Aerospace Autonomy Research, or CAESAR, aims at making these activities more efficient, safe, and continuous.Researchers at the center say that AI could optimize navigation for spacecraft, skillfully land space vehicles on planets or asteroids (小行星), allow driverless rovers to make decisions about where to go, what to avoid, and what to analyze, keep tabs on all the space junk (some 60,000 pieces, at last count) spinning around Earth, and much more.
To achieve such ambitions, Marco Pavone, CAESAR co-founder and relative professor of aeronautics and astronautics, announced that one of the center’s main projects will be to build a foundation model for space pursuits.A foundation model is one kind of general-purpose AI that’s trained on huge amounts of data and can solve various tasks, like producing text, images, and even videos.“This space foundation model,” Pavone said, “will be designed to synthesize (合成) information across a range of modalities, including vision, text, remote sensing (such as multi-spectral (多光谱的) imagery and radar), and space-object catalogs, and will be able to address different kinds of space-related tasks, including situational awareness, positioning, and navigation.”
Simone D Amico, CAESAR co-founder and associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics, made it clear that he, Pavone, and their co-workers arrange to proceed carefully, with eyes wide open to the potential risks (隐患) of seeking AI for spacecraft and robots. He stated that in some cases, AI components are by no means the most effective choice for space systems.
“We founded CAESAR with the objective to tackle unsolved problems in space borne autonomy through the wise incorporation (合并) of artificial intelligence components,” D Amico said.
Though the space foundation model will be a game changer, D Amico also noted the restrictions (限制) space imposes on the startup technology. For instance, space is a difficult, far-distance environment that’s not suitable for AI training, and powerful microprocessors needed for AI are still not flexible to space radiation.
32.What are CAESAR systems designed for
A.Clearing up the space junk.
B.Navigating planets and asteroids.
C.Raising space-related fund.
D.Doing space activities by AI.
33.What is one of CAESAR’s main pursuits according to the text
A.To provide once-and-for-all solutions to space problems.
B.To build a foundation model to help handle different missions.
C.To adopt the off-the-beaten-track
incorporation of AI sets.
D.To address potential problems of AI used in space exploration.
34.What is D Amico’s attitude towards CAESAR
A.Careful. B.Unclear.
C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.CAESAR’s Exploration in Asteroids
B.CAESAR’s Success in Engineering
C.CAESAR’s Attempt with Space-related AI
D.CAESAR’s Restrictions on Robots

Benefits of Space Exploration
On April 12, 1961, the Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey to outer space. The age of space exploration started that day. 36 Well, the answer is simple. The benefits of space, including medical, technological and economic benefits, are more than the dangers of it.
·Medical benefits
37 .Analyzing the effects of zero gravity on blood circulation (循环) led to many discoveries on how to prevent some types of heart failure. And the experiments and measurements of bone strength and bone loss in astronauts have helped doctors better understand bone diseases.
· 38
The space race has led to technological advancements in the shortest period of time, such as vacuum-sealed (真空密封的) food, fireproof materials and modern vacuum cleaners. 39 .Yet, we even don’t know that some NASA engineers originally developed them for the Apollo program that took humankind to the moon.As you can see, it is important for us to keep pushing the limits of space exploration.Who knows what kind of new technologies could be developed that will make our lives easier in the future.
·Creation of STEM jobs
Space exploration is one of the industries that require the largest percentage of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) jobs.A lot of those jobs are positions for engineers, data analysts, doctors, biologists and so on.Although these positions require highly qualified people to fill them, they are some of the highest-paid jobs in the market. 40 .
A.Space tourism industry
B.Development of new technologies
C.Is exploring space a waste of time and money
D.Today, we still use them in our daily lives
E.So, the growing space industry creates high-paid jobs
F.The medical benefits of space exploration reach every area of the human body
G.Why should we spend so much time and money to explore dangerous environments

To be honest, sometimes, I hate it when I start thinking about money because it brings me down and drives me sad. When I was younger, I always wondered why money was so important. There wasn’t anything I needed. It’s good to be a kid, since he or she doesn’t have to worry about responsibilities. But as everyone gets older, of course that changes.I work almost every day, but it’s still not enough. That’s what is discouraging—it’s never enough.Right now I have to sacrifice (牺牲) the money I make.I put my school on hold (暂停) so that I can pay for my girlfriend’s school fee and everything else.I’m very supportive in everything I do, and she is also very supportive. We warm each other up.I hope she really gets everything right, because we only have each other.I find that hope is my inspiration and that everything will work out however hard it gets.Even though I find that life is hard, it never stops me from helping others, especially those who are less fortunate. While I might be going through hard times myself, there are those out there who could be going through even harder times.
Last night, on my way home I stopped by to buy some burgers in a fast food restaurant.A homeless man approached me and asked, “Do you have any bottles lying around ” I knew he would recycle them for a few cents, but I didn’t have any.I said,“Sorry, I don’t.” And again he asked, “Can you spare some change ” I smiled and said, “Sorry, I can’t.” He was very polite. He smiled back and said, “OK, thank you.” Even though he didn’t have anything, he was still in good spirits.Just from the way he spoke, I could tell he was fine.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
I went in and ate my meal, but in my head I wondered if the homeless man was hungry.
No matter how hard life is, there are always ways to handle it.And it’s not always through money. It’s through love.

I went in and ate my meal, but in my head I wondered if the homeless man was hungry.
No matter how hard life is, there are always ways to handle it.And it’s not always through money. It’s through love.

【参考范文】
I went in and ate my meal, but in my head I wondered if the homeless man was hungry. After I finished my meal, I decided to order another one for him.I didn’t know if he was still around, but I thought my helping would warm him up.They handed me the hot chocolate first and as I waited for my burger, I noticed the homeless man standing beside me.I asked, “Are you hungry This hot chocolate is for you and there’s a burger coming up for you too.” He replied politely, “Thank you. That’s very kind of you.”
No matter how hard life is, there are always ways to handle it. And it’s not always through money. It’s through love. If you love someone, you will help him and give him what he needs. The love you give today might be forgotten tomorrow. But it doesn’t matter.Love everybody because that’s the greatest thing you can give and it is the start of your life trip.
