The 61-year-old potato farmer Cliff Young won the 1983 Westfield Sydney-Melbourne Ultramarathon, which took runners days to finish,in Australia.
When Cliff showed up in the race,he stuck out like a sore thumb in his everyday clothes different from the other professional runners’,quickly attracting the attention of reporters present.
“I grew up on a farm where we couldn’t afford horses.Whenever the storms would roll in,I’d have to go out and round up the sheep,” Cliff told reporters.“Sometimes I’d have to run those sheep for two or three days, but I’d always catch them.I believe I can run this race.”No one actually believed him. Most competitors were in their 20s and early 30s,with years of training and marathon experience.
On the first day of the race,Cliff was left far behind. But he had one advantage that no one had expected. He didn’t plan on stopping until he reached the finish line while all the others had been training to run for 18 hours a day and then stop and sleep for the other six.
When dawn broke, the other runners were shocked to learn that the old farmer was in the lead and that they would have to catch up with him.Although running slowly,he was the first to cross the finish line and received $10,000 as a prize. But he kept none of the prize and donated it to the homeless.
Cliff continued to run.In 1997,he set out to raise funds for homeless kids by running all 16,000 kilometers of the Australian coastline. In 2000,Cliff achieved a world age record in a six-day race in Victoria.Cliff Young died at 81,but his legend lives on.

Kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. That’s according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open,in May.
Kids who participated in community service were 34% more likely to be in very good physical health than those who didn’t participate, the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general.Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than peers who didn’t.The findings come from survey data provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17.About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
Studies like this have limitations.Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-service activity. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be doing well in general. This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect. It can only uncover connections. So it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more likely to have the energy or desire to volunteer.
But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health. In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people.More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness. So there’s a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources.Giving back to the community may be one such resource. And this study isn’t the only one to reach that conclusion.Previous research has also found links between volunteering and well-being among adults.Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And it makes them feel connected to those around them.Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth doing.
28.What’s a limitation of the study mentioned in the passage
A.Surveyed parents’ lack of knowledge.
B.The single research method.
C.Narrow geographical locations.
D.Narrow study subjects.
29.What can we learn from the third paragraph
A.Healthy people are less likely to volunteer.
B.Volunteering surely leads to better mental and physical health.
C.Parents know their kids’ mental and physical health very well.
D.There is a relationship between health and community-service activity.
30.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.There are various mental health resources.
B.People of all ages will serve the community.

Historical heritages are human beings’ wisdom.Cultural relics, however,as time goes by,suffer different degrees of erosion (侵蚀).People used to protect cultural relics by hand-work,including cleaning, photographing and rubbing techniques.Although this method can keep the basic information, many important details are still ignored.
3D scanning technology features in fast measurement speed and accurate catching capacity. It’s good at collecting enough and accurate 3D data from different angles, which is beneficial to the restoration of cultural relics when coming into accidental damage.Experts can also virtually restore the heritages through the computer, and finish assistant research via accurate 3D models.
For cultural relics’ protection,3D printing contributes to displaying cultural relics. It provides people with more chances to get to know cultural relics and better understand human beings’ history.
Yucheng Museum has dug out a new collection of cultural relics in April 2019.One of the most important issues for archaeologists is data storage.Invited by Quimbaya ArtxTech,ScanTech conducted 3D scanning immediately on these relics by the 3D scanner. This handheld 3D ray scanner carries a big weight in acquiring very accurate 3D data and brings great convenience for further restoration and research.
To avoid any damage,Yucheng Museum combined with 3D printing technology based on 3D data to reproduce 1:1 3D model of cultural relics for exhibition, which aims to make more people get close to history and pass on these precious cultural heritages.
Time flies and many thousand-year cultural treasures have gradually disappeared from our sight due to technical problems.However,3D scanning and 3D printing technologies put forward very effective 3D solutions for cultural relic display and protection.
32.What is the disadvantage of the method people used to protect cultural relics
A.It eroded cultural relics in a degree.
B.It made the research of cultural relics inconvenient.
C.It damaged the restoration of cultural relics.
D.It took no notice of many important details.
33.How is 3D scanning technology applied to heritage conservation
A.Gather the data of cultural relics efficiently.
B.Restore a damaged cultural relic on a computer.
C.Evaluate the original looks of cultural relics.
D.Restore cultural relics in the real world.
34.Why is Yucheng Museum mentioned in the text

Space is where our future is—trips to the Moon,Mars and beyond. Most people would think that apart from comets (彗星) and stars, there is little else out there. 36 Scientists are now concerned that if we don’t clean it up,we may all be in great danger.
The first piece of space junk was created in the year of 1964,when the American satellite Vanguard I stopped operating. 37 However, since it kept orbiting around the Earth without any results, scientists became increasingly comfortable abandoning things that no longer served any useful purpose in space.
38 The junk varies from tiny pieces of paint chipped off rockets to cameras, huge fuel tanks, and even odd items like the million-dollar tool kit that astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn Piper lost during a spacewalk.
The major problem with the space trash is that it may hit working satellites and damage travelling spaceship. In addition to this, many pieces of junk may crash with each other and break into pieces which fall back to the Earth.
39 Ground stations have been built to monitor larger pieces of space trash to prevent them from crashing into working satellites or space shuttles. 40 They will stop littering in space and to clean up the trash already there.
A.It lost its connection with the ground centre.
B.To avoid this, scientists have invented several ways for clearing the sky.
C.The junk floats slowly around the Earth.
D.However, since our space journey started,we have left much trash in space.
E.It is said that there are now over 500,000 pieces of man-made trash orbiting the Earth at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour.
F.Future plans include a cooperative effort among many nations.
G.It hasn’t resulted in any serious problems up to now.

The school picnic day was on Sunday, and on Saturday morning I decided to ask Mum some questions. As soon as Mum took the last bite of her toast,I decided I couldn’t wait for her any longer and asked,“Mum,where is Italy ”
My mum pushed up her glasses and looked at me with her head to one side. Then she said,“Italy is an European country which is very far away from here,my love. Why do you want to know that ” I shrugged (耸肩),“That’s where Mike, the new boy in our class,is from.”
She nodded and invited me to go to fetch the geography book. The book was big and Mum always kept the very big books on the bottom shelf of our bookcase.I watched as Mum flipped to the index and then to a page near the middle.“Here we go,” she said, turning the map around to show me.I let my finger meet hers where it said the word “Italy” in capital letters.According to the introduction to the country on the page,Mum helped me know more about the country.
“You know,Mum,Mike’s parents are extremely busy working in the downtown. He seldom eats regularly, let alone (更不用说) have his native foods.I really want him to be very happy for his first picnic with us...” I paused and observed Mum,worried that Mum would think that it was silly and maybe a waste of money buying food only to give it away. But she didn’t.Instead, she said,“I think that’s a brilliant idea! Go and get ready, and we’ll head out on a big shopping.”

“Oh,but what good is all this beauty,” cried the bird,“with such an unpleasant voice!”
“Listen,” said the fox,“each one owns something good:you have such beauty;the nightingale(夜莺) has her songs;and the owl(猫头鹰) has his eyes.Even if you had a sweet voice, you would still complain about another thing. Why can’t you just be happy about what you have already got ”
【参考范文】
The fable is about a peacock who complains about her ugly voice, ignoring her beauty. But a fox advises that she be content with what she owns.
After reading it,I understand that we teenagers should make good use of our advantages, stopping complaining about the shortcomings all the time.Had the peacock realised this, she would not have been so upset.
Many people make the same mistake. In fact, nobody can develop very well in all aspects even if he/she is a talent. So we should stay positive and value what we have instead of complaining too much.

I got ready so quickly that morning that I thought I must have beaten a world record. In five minutes I had my trousers and T-shirt pulled on,and hurriedly emptied my piggy bank. With all the money I saved carefully put in my pocket,I rushed to meet my smiling Mum at the front gate.We went to stands of fresh fruits and vegetables, selecting some for making pizza.Proudly looking at the products,Mum and I drove back home in high spirits.I could picture the perfect pizza which my mother was expert in cooking and the new boy’s amazed face.
We gathered on the grass on Sunday morning and I saw the Italian boy immediately.I waved my hand to draw Mike’s attention. He looked around and finally made sure that he was my target.Shy and quiet,he approached me with a light-hearted pace.I patted the place beside me,gestured to him to sit down and unpacked his native food.He hesitated at first but later focused his eyes on my sincere face and gave me a broad smile. What a beautiful day it was! We enjoyed the delicious pizza together and came to understand each other by sharing different experiences. No one would resist the sincere kindness.
