Christmas with children is full of sweet traditions: enjoying holiday songs while decorating the Christmas tree, going out to see festive lights with a cup of warm drink, and taking little ones to meet Santa Claus. Well, we’ve dropped the last activity in our family.
At first, parents often imagine how joyful it will be to take kids to visit Santa or tell them presents are coming from him. Yet this often brings along many confusing questions about how he can travel around the world in one night, plus the disappointment and lost trust when children finally learn the truth. That was something I wanted to avoid.
You might think our Christmas would be boring, dull and lacking warmth or magic. But I don’t see it that way. Instead of making my children believe Santa is real, I told them the tradition probably came from St. Nicholas, a historic figure known for his kindness and willingness to help poor children. The 2021 film A Boy Called Christmas helps children link holiday tales and customs to real history while keeping the spirit of giving alive.
December is full of family movie nights, game sessions, school plays and concerts. These shared moments have made my kids’ childhood more colorful and memorable. I hope they understand that it’s spending quality time with family and doing meaningful things together that creates the magic of the season. My love for them lasts far beyond a single day. Joy, surprise and warmth can exist any day as long as we stay kind and thankful.
My children are grown up now, and they are happy they never believed in the Santa story. It saved them from unnecessary disappointment and protected their simple, innocent childhood.
24. What is special about the author’s family Christmas
A. Not going to see Santa Claus. B. Enjoying beautiful Christmas lights.
C. Finding out the truth about Santa. D. Preparing gifts for poor children.
25. What does the author want to express to her kids in Paragraph 3
A. Generosity has its roots in real stories.
B. Warmth is the most important part of Christmas.
C. St. Nicholas is a hero unknown to most people.
D. The Santa tale will certainly hurt kids’ trust.
26. Why does the author talk about “the magic of the season”
A. To show the Santa myth is not essential to Christmas.
B. To explain why family activities are popular in winter.
C. To stress Christmas is the most beloved festival for families.
D. To emphasize shared family time is the real attraction of Christmas.
27. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Strict but loving. B. Generous and modest. C. Considerate and wise. D. Cold and traditional.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two young scholars from Germany who shared a deep passion for storytelling. As university students, they grew fascinated by folktales — oral traditions passed down through generations, woven into the fabric of local culture. Determined to preserve these precious narratives, they traveled across Germany, listening to storytellers in villages and towns, carefully recording every detail. Their goal was to capture the essence of German folklore and safeguard it for future generations.
Many of the tales they collected bore similarities to stories from France, Italy, Japan, and other countries, yet they remained a distinct German flavor. Between 1812 and 1815, the brothers published two volumes of these tales, which later became known worldwide as Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The collection included over 200 stories, most adapted from oral sources, with beloved classics like Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty standing out as timeless favorites.
The Grimms’ tales were not just entertaining — they reflected the traditional life and beliefs of the German people. Forests, a prominent feature of Germany’s landscape, often served as mysterious settings in their stories. In the past, many Germans viewed forests as places of both wonder and danger; in the Grimms’ tales, they became realms (领域) of enchanted (被施魔法的) wolves, talking animals, and hidden treasures. These elements mirrored the cultural fears and fascinations of the time.
Although modern audiences often associate these stories with childhood, the brothers initially wrote them primarily for adults. Early versions were dark, with vivid descriptions of hardship and conflict. Recognizing the potential to share these tales with younger readers, the brothers later revised the texts: they softened the more frightening scenes, added gentle illustrations, and emphasized moral lessons — such as the value of hard work, kindness, and respect for parents.
The Grimms believed that the most authentic forms of culture were rooted in language and history. Their work inspired other collectors to document folktales across Europe, shaping the way people viewed traditional storytelling. Today, Grimm’s Fairy Tales remains a cornerstone of global literature, bridging the gap between past and present and reminding readers of the enduring power of shared narratives.
28. What motivated the Grimm brothers to collect folktales
A. To create new stories for children. B. To protect German cultural heritage.
C. To compete with international storytellers. D. To publish books for academic fame.
29. What do the forests in the Grimms’ tales reflect
A. The brothers’ love for nature. B. The dangers of the German countryside.
C. Traditional German cultural attitudes. D. The influence of foreign folktales.
30. Why did the Grimm brothers revise their original tales
A. To make them suitable for young readers.
B. To remove all dark and violent content.
C. To match them with modern cultural values.
D. To increase the number of stories in the collection.
31. What can we infer about the Grimms’ contribution to culture
A. They invented the concept of folktale collections.
B. Their work helped shape global literary trends.
C. They focused only on German-language stories.
D. Their tales replaced oral storytelling traditions.

The Value of Science
When I was younger, I thought science would bring benefits to everyone. It was clearly useful and good. But during the war, I worked on the atomic bomb. This scientific achievement was devastating — it meant destruction and put our future at risk. I had to ask myself: “Does science have an inherent (内在的) dark side ”
Put another way, what was the value of the science I’d dedicated myself to, the thing I’d loved, when I saw the terrible harm it could cause
The first value of science is well-known: scientific knowledge lets us create and do countless things. Of course, if we use it for good, that’s not just science’s credit — it’s also the moral choice behind the work. Scientific knowledge is a tool that can be used for good or evil, but it doesn’t come with instructions on how to apply it. This power still holds value, even if it’s misused.
Another value of science is the intellectual joy it offers. When we dig deep into any question, we feel excitement and mystery over and over. More knowledge brings deeper, more wonderful mysteries, pushing us to explore further. We never fear that answers will disappoint us; instead, we eagerly uncover new wonders that lead to more questions.
Thanks to science, we’ve imagined things far more fantastic than any poet or dreamer of the past could have.
I now turn to a third value: scientists are used to ignorance, doubt, and uncertainty — and this experience is invaluable. When a scientist doesn’t know an answer, they accept their ignorance. When they have a hypothesis, they’re uncertain. Even when they’re confident in a result, they still hold some doubt.
We scientists take it for granted that it’s okay to live without having all the answers. But our freedom to doubt came from a long fight against authority in science’s early days. To keep progressing, we must never forget that struggle; we must acknowledge our ignorance and embrace doubt.
It’s our duty as scientists, knowing how progress comes from freedom of thought, to defend this freedom; to teach that doubt is not to be feared but welcomed, and to demand this freedom for future generations.
32. Why did the author start questioning the value of science
A. Because he found science too complex to master.
B. Because he saw science could be used to cause misfortune.
C. Because he thought science failed to bring intellectual joy.
D. Because he believed scientists were often uncertain about their work.
33. What can we infer about the author’s view on scientific knowledge
A. It guides us to make moral decisions.
B. Its true value only appears when used for good purposes.
C. It doesn’t tell us how to use it properly.
D. It is less important than freedom of thought.
34. What does “the intellectual joy” mean according to Paragraph 4
A. Science is complex and can help people become clever.
B. Science is great fun and people take delight in learning science.
C. Science is unlimited and people get pleasure from making constant discoveries.
D. Science is developing and people enjoy the ever-changing scientific knowledge.
35. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s overall view on the value of science
A. Science is dangerous and needs strict control.
B. Science’s main value lies in creating new technologies.
C. Science is about solving mysteries and has nothing to do with morality.
D. Science is a tool with moral, offering intellectual joy and supporting freedom of thought.

Living Virtuously in the Era of Technology
Whether we are communicating with peers, completing academic tasks, or making purchases on digital platforms, moral dilemmas are unavoidable. For young people, particularly teenagers, it is crucial to cultivate and demonstrate positive qualities such as integrity, compassion, and responsibility within the virtual space. 36
37 It is the fundamental virtue for everyone. When we finish online assignments or take online tests, we should never copy others’ answers or use search engines to cheat. When we communicate with others online, we should tell the truth and never spread rumors or fake news. Even when no one is watching us online, we must stick to the bottom line of honesty.
Kindness is another essential virtue we need to practice. 38 When we see others being cyberbullied online, we should not stand by and watch, but try to help them in a proper way. When our friends are in trouble and ask for help online, we should give them sincere advice instead of making fun of them. Small acts of kindness online can warm people’s hearts just like those in real life.
We also need to keep a strong sense of responsibility in the digital world. 39 We should be responsible for our own words and actions — don’t post harmful or inappropriate content online, and don’t comment on others randomly. We should also take responsibility for the network environment — if we see fake news or harmful information, we can report it to the relevant platform in time.
Virtue is not a word that is far away from us, but it is reflected in every small choice we make.
40 As long as we keep honesty, kindness and responsibility in our hearts, we can practice virtues anytime and anywhere, whether in real life or in the digital world, and become a virtuous person.
A. Honesty is the first step to practicing virtues online.
B. Here are some practical suggestions for us to follow.
C. We should use the internet to help others instead of hurting them.
D. A virtuous person is loved and respected by everyone around him.
E. We can make more friends online by chatting with them every day.
F. It doesn’t matter whether we practice virtues in real life or online.
G. Every click and comment contributes to the health of the online space we share.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi. One time, I was called at midnight to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for one light in a window.
I walked to the door and knocked. After a long wait, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car ” she said. I took her suitcase and gave her my arm. We walked slowly to the street. She kept thanking me for my kindness.
“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I try to treat my passengers the way I want my mother to be treated.”
“You’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown ”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered.
“I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).”
I saw her eyes shining with tears.
“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly turned off the meter (计时器). “What road do you want me to take ” I asked.
For hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighbourhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she asked me to just slow down while she sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the sun was coming up, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the hospice. As we pulled up, two nurses were waiting for us. They helped her into a wheelchair.

Dear Ms. Li,
I am writing to sincerely apply to set up a special festival for our class. We name it Class Friendship Day, and we plan to celebrate it on June 10th every year in our classroom after school. This special day will belong to every student in our class.
There are various meaningful activities on that day. First, we will take photos together to record our precious time as a group. Besides, each student can write a warm note to a classmate who has helped him or her. What’s more, we will share small snacks and encourage everyone to speak out their love and thanks to the class.
This festival is of great importance to our class. It not only strengthens our friendship but also creates warm and unforgettable memories. Meanwhile, it helps build a more united and positive class culture. I would appreciate it if you could support this idea.
Yours sincerely,

“How much do I owe you ” she asked me, reaching for her purse. I shook my head gently, telling her there was no charge. “You’ve given me the most precious gift tonight,” I said softly. I leaned down and gave her a warm hug, and she held me tightly, tears rolling down her cheeks. “Thank you for being the last kind soul I meet in this life, ” she whispered. I watched as the nurses wheeled her into the hospice, my heart full of tenderness. I drove home in silence, realizing that kindness is the most powerful language in the world.
Few days later, I received a letter from hospice. It was written by the old lady before she passed away. In the letter, she thanked me again for the unforgettable night, saying that my kindness had made her last journey full of warmth and dignity. She also mentioned that I had fulfilled her last wish to revisit the places that held all her beautiful memories. The letter deeply moved me, and I understood that a small act of kindness can light up someone’s whole life. From then on, I always treat every passenger with the same warmth, because I know that every encounter is a chance to spread love.

M: Could you tell me your name and your phone number
W: Annie Gallo. My number is 505-417-6172.
M: Sorry, I can’t find your information in our system. Is it possible that you used a different phone number when you registered
W: That reminds me. I used to live in Wyoming and moved here two years ago. I lived in a different state back then. (14) The number I used at that time was 307-378-1459.
M: Okay, I found your information. You will receive a confirmation letter in your mailbox in three minutes. Just follow the instructions in it, and you can sign in to your account again. (15)
W: Thank you very much.
