Excitement filled the air as we were aboard the ship to Antarctica, enjoying the warmth of the room. Then one morning we saw a sign announcing an open invitation to all passengers: Polar Plunge (极地跳水) at 12:30.
My husband and I stared at the sign. His face brightened, but I had a wave of panic in my stomach. Hundreds of reasons for not doing it filled my mind. “No way,” I said. “For starters, we’re much too old. The water’s freezing cold. Heights terrify me. I’m not much of a swimmer. Not only that,” I complained, “but it means I’d have to wear a swimsuit publicly with so many people looking at my fat body.” He gave me a quick hug along with his appealing smile. “We’ll never have another chance,” he insisted. My determination gradually weakened. My heart “No way” gave way to a weak “Maybe”. Finally I forced myself to say, “Okay. Let’s go for it.”
Dressed in our swimsuits and shaking with anxiety, we gathered with the other participants in the lower part of the ship. I eyed the group. A daring teen tried to be first in line. A twenty-something woman in a bikini also stepped forward. The remaining few ranged in age from enthusiastic young people to middle-aged adults joking and laughing. We two eighty-year-olds were visibly the ancient, senior citizens of the group.
Our turn came all too soon. We moved onto the jump-off point, legs shaking, but it was too late to turn back. We held our hands together, took a deep breath, and took the Polar Plunge into the icy ocean. After what seemed a century, we rose to the surface and swam to the safety platform. Shaking and laughing, I shouted excitedly, “I can’t believe I did that.” That afternoon, I gained my fame and became the focus of the day.
In my memory bank, I’ve stored that fame, and it will last the rest of my life. However, my one-time, completely wild risk is enough. Ah, but the brief moment of fame was so wonderful.

Tens of thousands of centuries-old books are being pulled from the shelves of a medieval abbey (中世纪修道院) in Hungary in an effort to save them from a beetle infestation (甲虫侵染) that could destroy centuries of history.
Pannonhalma Archabbey, sitting upon a tall hill in northwestern Hungary, houses the country’s oldest collection of books, as well as many of its earliest and most important written records. Any damage to the collection represents a blow to cultural and historical heritage. The beetle infestation was first discovered during a regular library cleaning. Employees noticed unusual layers of dust on the shelves. Upon opening the books, they saw small holes in the paper. Restoration workers are removing about 100,000 books from their shelves and carefully placing them in boxes, the start of a disinfection process that aims to kill the tiny beetles.
To kill the beetles, the boxes of books are being placed into tall, airtight plastic bags from which all oxygen is removed. After six weeks in the pure nitrogen (氮) environment, the abbey hopes all the beetles will be destroyed. Before being reshelved, each book will be individually checked and cleaned. Any book damaged by the beetles will be set aside for later restoration.
The abbey, which hopes to reopen the library at the beginning of next year, believes the effects of climate change contributed to the beetle infestation as average temperatures rise rapidly in Hungary. Hajdu said higher temperatures have allowed the beetles to undergo several more development cycles annually than they could in cooler weather.
28.Why does the author mention the Pannonhalma Archabbey in paragraph 2
A.To stress the historical value of the abbey.
B.To show the challenge of restoring the collection.
C.To show the severity of the beetle infestation.
D.To stress the significance of saving the books.
29.What is the correct order of the disinfection process
a. Put the books into boxes.
b. Check and clean the books.
c. Restore the damaged books.
d. Expose the books to nitrogen for six weeks.
e. Put the boxes into oxygen-free bags
A.a-e-d-b-c. B.a-e-d-c-b.
C.b-c-a-e-d. D.b-c-a-d-e.
30.How does climate change influence the book damage
A.It increases the speed of paper aging.
B.It causes insect infestations more frequently.
C.It makes beetles in the books live longer.
D.It attracts beetles to the ancient building.
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Nitrogen is used to protect ancient books in the world.
B.Centuries-old books are being saved from a beetle infestation.
C.Pannonhalma Archabbey’s medieval library is of historical significance.
D.Climate change threatens old books and worsens the beetle infestation.
In the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, millions of monarch butterflies find shelter in the oyamel fir forests after a tough migration from Canada and the United States down to Mexico for the winter. Now, as rising temperatures, droughts, and disease threaten the forests of the monarch reserve, scientists are hoping to help these trees migrate.
“We’re doing something different,” says Sáenz-Romero, a researcher of the reserve. “If we don’t do this, the trees in the monarch reserve are going to die.” By 2090, the reserve’s forest habitats are expected to deteriorate, as temperatures warm. Using a technique called assisted migration, researchers might be able to move these trees to the nearby volcano.
Forests move naturally; they shift in many directions and elevations as climate changes. Assisted migration helps the forest move more quickly than it would do so naturally. You collect seeds from a place with a specific climate, like the monarch reserve, and move them to an area that will have a similar climate in the future, explains Sáenz-Romero.
The experiment began in 2017, when Sáenz-Romero and his team gathered seeds from oyamel fir trees in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve at various altitudes. For two years, the plants grew in a shade house and then for another year in a nursery at around 9,800 feet to help them adjust to the altitude. Then, in 2021, they worked with the local community to plant the seedlings under “nurse plants”, which protected them from difficult conditions. In 2023, six years after planting the seeds, they found that at two of those heights, 11,800 and 12,400 feet, nearly 70 percent of the seedlings had survived even at the higher elevation.
“These types of experiments are tremendously important,” says Sally Aitken, who wasn’t involved in the study. However, assisted migration outside of a tree’s normal range comes with concerns, Aitken says. Oyamel firs don’t normally grow at this height on Nevado de Toluca’s slopes. Moving a species could have unintended ecological fallout for other species present in that ecosystem.
For now, in Mexico, Sáenz-Romero hopes this new study convinces conservationists and government officials that assisted migration can establish new potential wintering sites for the monarch butterflies.
32.What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Form. B.Expand. C.Worsen. D.Melt.
33.What can we learn about assisted migration from the experiment
A.It has achieved some intended targets. B.It expands the species of nurse plants.
C.It takes way too much time and effort. D.It saved monarch butterflies worldwide.
34.What might assisted migration lead to according to Aitken
A.Presence of new species. B.Change of the local weather.
C.Reduction of Oyamel firs. D.Disturbance of the ecosystem.
35.What does Sáenz-Romero suggest Mexican officials do
A.Build more natural reserves for the monarch butterflies.
B.Support assisted migration to protect monarch butterflies.
C.Learn more relevant knowledge about insect conservation.
D.Convince conservationists to establish observational centers.
How to Wake Up Feeling Motivated
We’ve all been there. The alarm goes off in the morning and we repeatedly press that extra sleep button to enjoy a few more minutes of precious sleep. However, it isn’t always the best way to start the day. What you do in the morning can set the tone for the rest of your day. 36 You may actually stick with it!
Prepare the Night Before. When it comes to tips on how to wake up, the best morning routine will actually depend on what you do the night before. 37 Writing down your worries can help you relax, knowing that you can tackle them another time.
38 Whether your goal is to get up and read an article or book, check your email, do some housework, exercise, or even play a game, having an objective to complete is a great way to get your body and mind motivated. No matter what activity you choose, this can be a great way to energize you for the day.
Hydrate (补充水分) When You Wake. You’ve just gone approximately eight hours without eating or drinking, so your body could use a pick-me-up. 39 Many experts suggest that you try drinking some water to start your metabolism (新陈代谢) first. This helps you stay energetic all day long.
Call a Loved One. Start your morning by connecting with a beloved family member or best friend. 40 It can help you connect with friends and family who live far away (check your time zones, though!) and remind you of what you’re thankful for in life.
A.Morning exercise makes your day.
B.Start your morning with an activity.
C.Don’t rush for that cup of coffee just yet, though.
D.It can be of great help to set a positive tone for the day.

六、书面表达

When I was a child, I often saw my grandfather working in his small garden with vegetables and flowers. Every weekend, he would get up early, pull weeds, water the plants, and look after them carefully. To me, his work seemed boring and tiring. I could never understand why he spent so much time on those little plants. I would rather stay indoors playing games than step into the sun-baked garden.
One summer, my parents were busy with their work and asked me to stay with my grandfather during the summer vacation. I had no choice but to agree, though I was far from happy about it. On the first morning, he handed me a small shovel (铲子) and said, “You’re going to help me today.” I sighed quietly, feeling unwilling and even a little upset.
The sun was burning hot. We pulled weeds, carried water, and loosened the soil. My back hurt, my hands got dirty and sweat ran down my face. I wanted to give up many times, but I saw my grandfather kept working silently. His back was bent, but he never stopped. I felt a little ashamed and continued.
I soon discovered that the garden was actually a lively little world hidden from plain (平淡无奇的) sight. I watched with amazement as a ladybug crawled slowly across a leaf. I even found a small snail shell hidden under a stone and watched the dewdrops (露珠) shone like diamonds in the early morning sun. Everything in the garden has its own characteristics. It was through labor that I discovered its beauty and that labor brought the garden to life.

M: Welcome to Hidden Valley Stone Castle. I’m Matthew, and I’ll be your tour guide for today, sharing centuries of stories with you. The castle was built in the 11th century. It was a summer house for royal families because as you can see, it’s surrounded by beautiful nature and ancient forests. Later, however, it was used as a prison where many war prisoners were held during the 17th century regional conflicts. Owing to the castle’s history and natural beauty, a lot of movies about the Middle Ages have been filmed here. You’ve probably seen some of them. Despite its ancient origins, modern facilities have been added to improve tourists’ experience. Please understand that some parts of the castle are inaccessible due to ongoing repair work. Now, let’s start walking around the castle. Please stay together for safety on the uneven stones. If you have any questions during the tour, just ask me. I will be happy to answer them.

66.Dear Peter,
I’m more than delighted to share with you some details of the martial arts show Wu BOT from the 2026 Spring Festival Gala.
Featuring AI-powered robots performing classical Chinese martial arts with humans, the program combines traditional kung fu with cutting-edge technology. The robots’ precise and dazzling moves brought the audience an amazing visual feast. This show is far more than entertainment. Not only does it showcase the charm of Chinese culture, but it also boosts our national confidence.
From my perspective, the program proves that tradition and innovation can go hand in hand, which inspires us to value our culture and embrace new technology.

One morning, my grandfather found a juicy red tomato in the garden. He called me over excitedly, his eyes sparkling with joy. I walked over quickly and picked the tomato carefully. Bright red, smooth and shiny, it looked incredibly plump and juicy. Taking a big bite, I felt the sweet and sour juice bursting on my tongue, fragrant and heady, far more delicious than any tomato from the supermarket. At that moment, I truly understood the meaning of hard work — Nothing tastes sweeter than the fruits of your labor. As the summer vacation was coming to an end, I was reluctant to leave this lovely garden, which was not a boring place any more, but a fascinating world full of life and my sweat.
The summer vacation over, I came back home with my attitude to labor completely changed. I no longer stayed indoors playing games all day. Instead, I took the initiative to help my parents with housework, watering the flowers and tidying my room. I began to take delight in working with my own hands and found a strong sense of achievement in every small task. Not only does labor make my life fulfilling and meaningful, but it also brings peace and happiness to my heart, helping me stay away from laziness and become a more positive and responsible person.
