Spoken rules are clearly stated, either in writing or by speech. You can find them in school handbooks, traffic laws, or signs in public places like “No Smoking.” Unspoken rules, however, are not written down. They are based on respect and politeness. These rules change from culture to culture. For example, in some countries, it is normal to be very close when talking. In others, you should keep an arm’s length away. In some places, taking off your shoes before entering a home is expected. In others, it is not necessary. Before traveling to a new country, it is wise to learn about its unspoken rules so you don’t accidentally offend anyone.
