Sydney Barta calls herself a“girly girl” who loves pink. After track practice, in her dormitory full of shoes, she wears running clothes with gold earrings and long white nails decorated with shiny red stars. Her soft pink bedspread matches her pink boots, and piles of shoe boxes line her closet—— impressive for someone with only one foot.“I only have one foot, but I have so many shoes,” she laughs. Barta, a short-distance runner, recently signed a deal with a shoe brand, and even wears heels(高跟鞋) by taping them to her artificial leg with sticky tape.
When she was 6, Barta's life changed during a fun run with her twin brother. A large metal frame was blown over by the wind and hit her ankle, making an amputation(截肢) necessary. Her mother showed her a photo of a famous male athlete with a disability to cheer her up, but Barta felt he was not a good role model for her.“He wasn't female at all, and I was a girly girl who loved ballet,” she said. Now a five-time U. S. Paralympic Track and Field national champion, she is dedicated to encouraging young girls who have had amputations.
As a Rhodes Scholar applying to medical school, her dream of becoming a bone doctor grew trom difficult experiences. Before her junior year of high school, she broke her boat-shaped bone(a key bone in the arch of the foot) in her only foot during a race, which temporarily destroyed herParalympic dreams. This experience made her want to study how chemicals, training and body movement differences affect athletes with disabilities.
Just when she thought she had to give up track, Stanford's head track coach J. J. Clark called to let her join the team.“I was so excited——I never knew what was possible,” she said. Following her personal belief—— When something bad happens, wring every bit of good from it—— Barta is now getting ready for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics, showing that courage can turn challenges into amazing life journeys.
24. What does the first paragraph mainly reveal about Barta
A. She benefits from brand deals. B. She enjoys her present dormitory life.
C. She has a strong passion for dressing up. D. She is committed to athletic training.
25. What motivated Barta to pursue a career as a bone doctor

27. What does Barta's story convey
A. You are what you wear. B. Still water runs deep.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Great minds think alike.

China has reached a new milestone with over 40 million new energy vehicles sold, Xinhua reported. As these vehicles have been on the roau for years, their power batteries are now starting to reach the end of their service life. But what does it mean for a battery to“retire”, and where do these old batteries go
As batteries age, they degrade. When their capacity falls to about seventy-five percent, they are no longer suitable for use in vehicles. According to CCTV, batteries still able to hold between fifty percent and eighty percent of their power can be given a second life. They are often used as backup power sources or for storing energy. Once a battery's power falls below forty percent, it is usually taken apart to get useful materials out.
Old batteries contain dangerous materials that can harm living things and may even cause fires or explosions if mishandled. Yet they also hold valuable metals. Recycling them offers clear benefits—— in China, for instance, demand for lithium(锂) is high. In 2024, the country imported about 5.25 million tons of lithium concentrate. Recovering such metals from old batteries helps reduce reliance on mining and imports.
One common method is hydrometallurgical recycling. This process starts by separating the battery's electrodes(电极), using chemicals to break down the glue or heat to burn it off. The leftover powder is then mixed into a special liquid. Valuable metals are taken out by mixing two liquids that don't mix, like oil and water. This makes it easy to collect the metals.
This method, while useful, can create waste that may pollute the air and water. Handling the liquid inside batteries is a big challenge. Many companies are now working to solve this. For example, one of China's leading new energy vehicle makers burns this liquid at very high temperatures, turning it into gases. Harmful gases are removed by burning them again and cooling quickly.
To ensure safety, China has set 22 national rules for battery recycling. These rules cover how to take apart and reuse old batteries properly, helping protect the environment and make good use of resources.
28. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By quoting experts. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By raising questions.
29. What probably happens to a battery with 78% capacity
A. It is recycled for metal. B. It is directly taken apart.
C. It is employed as a spare power bank. D. It is integrated with new ones.
30. What is the method of separating metals mentioned in paragraph 4
A. Using two unmixable liquids. B. Removing glues with hot air.
C. Burning metals at high temperature. D. Mixing liquids and powders together.
31. What can be inferred about China's approach to battery recycling
A. It emphasizes extending battery life. B. It relies largely on foreign technology.
C. It favors chemical methods over others. D. It uses regulations to secure the process.
D
What's the point of studying the humanities This question has arisen on social media, especially with the rise of AI tools. As a Malay language teacher at a university in Nanning,Guangxi, I feel I should share what I think. The fact that I am working in China shows that the country still values the humanities, even though some universities have reportedly reduced then student intakes in these fields.
Some people say the humanities lead to“limited job chances” But I must ask: Have we explored all possibilities Fvunl my teaching experience, the humanities provide rich opportunties across many industries. The challenge is that students often lack the creativity to turn what they' ve learned into a career path. For example, most linguistics(语言学) majors think only of becomin, teachers or translators. They don't often consider roles such as voice app actors, computationa:linguists, user experience researchers, content strategists or social media analysts.
Studies have shown the significant value that humanities graduates brng. A 2023 report fron the UK's Higher Education Policy Institute found a strong link between the skills of humanntie.graduates and those demanded by employers across the job market. Eight of the ten fastest-growri:enterprises in the UK now hire more humanities graduates than graduates from other fields.
This shows that humanities graduates bring special qualities to the workplace—— qualities the differ from those developed in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). They tend to be more open-minded, able to see the big picture and quick to adapt to change.
What's more, the Future of Jobs Report 2023 by the World Economic Forum said that critical and creative thinking are among the most important skills for workers now and in the future. These skills are central to humanities education. Therefore, we must not downplay the importance of the humanities. Throughout history, the humanities have played a major role in shaping civilized human beings. In the end, they are what give life meaning and keep us from becoming like robots.
32. Why is the author's job in China mentioned
A. To prove the humanities are still highly prized.
B. To stress the unavoidable impact of AI tools.
C. To criticize universities' admission policies.
D. To show language education is important.
33. Why do humanities students often fail to find suitable jobs
A. They are offered few job opportunities.
B. They choose to become teachers or translators.
C. They have a narrow view of possible career paths.
D. They lack knowledge required by modern industries.
34. What does the 2023 UK report indicate about humanities graduates
A. They dominate traditional businesses. B. They earn less than STEM graduates.
C. They struggle to meet employers' needs. D. They are favored by fast-growing industries.
35. What does the author think of the career prospect for humanities graduates
A. Limited. B. Promising. C. Hopeless. D. Uncertain.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Ever feel like there's never enough time these days 36 However, when we stop to think about our day before going to bed, we can't quite explain what we actually did, and might even feel a bit empty.
The idea of“time poverty” is not new. First introduced in 1977, it has attracted much attention over the decades. Cassie Holmes, a social psychologist, tracked the time data of tens of thousands of people and found that when people have less than two hours of free time each day, their life satisfaction drops. 37
We live in a world that values productivity. People need to be efficient, take on different roles and deal with many tasks. 38 Not only does this hurt people's well-being, but it can also lead to a crisis in social relationships. A University of Chicago study found that over the past decade, people's participation in community aetivities had dropped by 58 percent, and that the chance of neighbors knowing each other had fahen from 75 percent in the 1980s to only 22 percent in 2022.
39 Holmes pointed out that when people have over five hours of free time a day, they may start to feel a loss of purpose and achievement, Those who have two to five hours of free time each day report the highest levels of happiness and satistaetion.
Time is a resource that is equally shared among all people. 40 If you ever feel short on time, try making small changes to find some“me time”、 Exercising or volunteering can help you make the most of your time and give you a sense of achievement.
A. This can probably lead to a lack of personal time.
B. Time poverty is no longer a problem in modern society.
C. But more free time does not necessarily mean greater happiness.
D. The key lies not in how much time we have, but in how we use it.
E. It explains why we always don't do so much yet still feel fulfilled.
F. They may even start to experience feelings such as anxiety and burnout.
G. Rushed by deadlines and flooded with social media, we feel each day is packed.

When Sarah's daughter Emily fell into depression at fifteen, she didn't know how to help. She would stand outside Emily's door and listen. Sometimes she heard crying, and sometimes nothing. She knocked with meals that came back uneaten. She lay awake at night, wondering if she was failing as a mother.
One night, Sarah walked upstairs and knocked. She heard the quiet“come in”. Emily was sitting on her bed, surrounded by books she never opened, her face pale and her eyes empty.
Sarah sat beside her. Instead of asking how she felt, she said,“Tomorrow morning, I'm going or a run. I want you to come with me.”
Emily stared,“I don't run.”
“I know. Neither do I. We' ll walk. We' ll just walk.”
Silence stretched. Then came a whisper“Okay.”
The next morning, they walked at dawn. Emily didn't speak. Sarah didn't push. They walked twenty minutes and it was the longest time Emily had spent outside in months.
After two weeks' walking, Emily said,“Can we jo g ”
They jogged slowly and painfully, yet they kept moving. The fog didn't lift all at once. Some days Emily refused to go, some days they walked in silence, and on others Emily spoke while Sarah istened.
As months passed, jogs gradually turned into runs. One evening, Sarah found Emily looking at running routes online.“There's a 5K in June,” Emily said.“Maybe we could do it.”
They tried a 5K, a 10K, and then a half-marathon, and Emily gradually began to talk more about school and her feelings. The fog was thinner now, letting sunlight through.
The year Emily turned seventeen, they registered for their first full marathon. They trained for six months. On the morning of the marathon, they waited at the starting area with thousands of others. The sun rose over the city.“I can't imagine what would happen if you hadn't knocked on my door that night,” Emily said.

One possible version:
So she took Emily's hand and stepped up to the starting line. At the sound of the starting gun, they moved forward slowly at first, side by side. When they felt tired halfway, Emily looked at Sarah and said,“I'm a little scared that I can't finish it.” Sarah smiled and petted her hand gently,“We' ve come so far, and we' ll finish it together.” They encouraged each other, drinking water now and then to keep going. The crowd around them cheered loudly, which gave them more strength. They kept running, step by step, not caring about how fast they were.
As they crossed the finish line, Emily realized it was not just about running. It was about walking through the dark days together, and, more importantly, about never giving up on each other. She hugged her mom tightly, tears running down their faces.“Thank you, Mom. You pulled me out of the dark,” she said. Sarah held Emily close, feeling proud. She knew that the marathon was over, but their journey of love and recovery would go on. Emily had found her courage again, and that was the best gift she could ever get.
