Life is full of choices. Sometimes, we have to make a big decision very quickly. What should we do when we have to choose between something important to ourselves and helping someone else Jiang Zhaopeng is a great example. Let’s see what he did and how he made his choice.
Jiang Zhaopeng is an 18-year-old student from Shandong Province. That morning, he was going to take an important exam called the Spring Gaokao with a classmate. This exam is a big step toward getting into a vocational (职业的) college. But on the way to the exam, something unexpected happened. Jiang’s classmate suddenly got very sick. His heart stopped working and he might lose his life because of it. Jiang didn’t waste any time. He remembered the first aid training he had received in school. He started doing CPR (心肺复苏术) to help his classmate. The driver Wang Tao called in the police and rushed them to the hospital in just seven minutes. Thanks to Jiang and Wang’s quick actions, the doctors were able to save the classmate’s life.
However, Jiang missed his Chinese exam. That meant he couldn’t get any marks from the subject. It was a big deal because the exam was very important for his future. But when people asked Jiang if he felt bad about missing the exam, he said, “My exam can wait, but my classmate only lives once.” He thought he had made the right choice. People were deeply touched by his words.
If you were Jiang Zhaopeng, would you make the same choice

As a middle school student, you may often feel that your life is full of homework, tests, and after-school classes. You need to spend a lot of time studying subjects like math, English, science, and Chinese. Sometimes, you may feel tired or even stressed (有压力的). But at the same time, you also have hobbies—things you enjoy doing, like reading, playing basketball, drawing, or music. So how can you balance study and hobbies
First, learn to plan your time. Time is important for everyone, but there’s never enough. You can make a daily plan. Write down the time for schoolwork and the time for your hobbies. Try this idea: divide your day into small parts (like 30 minutes each) and decide what to do in each part. For example, do math from 6:00-6:30 pm and play the guitar from 7:30-8:00 pm.
Second, choose hobbies that help studies. Hobbies don’t have to be completely separate (分开的) from schoolwork. Reading makes your brain stronger. Hobbies like computer coding or taking photos can help you solve problems. Similarly, joining an English drama club can improve your speaking skills while satisfying your interest in acting. Some hobbies can even improve your schoolwork! Liu Yue loves making science videos. She often records short videos to explain physics experiments, which helps her understand lessons better. “My hobby makes learning fun,” she says.
Third, set clear goals for both study and hobbies. During study time, focus on finishing tasks instead of keeping checking your phone. When drawing or playing sports, fully enjoy the process without worrying about exams. Zhang Wei, a junior 3 student, shares: “I study hard from Monday to Friday so that I can play football with friends freely on weekends.” This makes him feel relaxed and motivated (有动力的).
Both study and hobbies matter. Balance doesn’t mean spending equal (相同的) time on each—just use time wisely. Planning well is key to enjoying both. Try writing your weekly plan on paper. Remember, a balanced life makes you both a better learner and a happier person.
28.Which situation is most similar to Liu Yue’s hobby
A. Jack plays football daily to stay healthy.
B. Lucy watches movies to kill time on weekends.
C. Tom listens to music while doing his homework.
D. Ben designs games to practise problem-solving skills.
29.What can we infer from Zhang Wei’s example
A. Junior 3 students have little time for hobbies.
B. Balancing study and play reduces stress.
C. Strict study plans lead to better grades.
D. Study and hobbies need equal time.
30.What is the main idea of the passage
A. How to balance study and hobbies. B. Why hobbies are good for study.
C. How to choose useful hobbies. D. Why students have much stress.
C
Roger Federer, a world-famous sports star, quit (放弃) the 2020 Olympic Games to deal with his knee problem. It was a hard decision because no one wanted to be a quitter. But finding the courage to let go can be good for you.
Nothing is fun all the time. Sticking at something difficult teaches us important skills like perseverance (毅力). However, learning to let go when things aren’t right is important too. Maybe your heart isn’t in playing the piano any more, or you only play football because your friends do and you want to try a different sport instead. Making the decision to walk away can free up time and energy to spend on something you really enjoy. In fact, studies show that letting go of goals you can’t reach, or don’t really want, can build up your confidence and help you lead a happier and healthier life.
But how can you know it’s time to stop and move on Eric Bean is an expert in sport psychology (心理学) who helps athletes and teams understand their feelings. He says, “Quitting is never a matter of black and white.” He suggests thinking carefully about why you aren’t enjoying something any more. Is it because you’ve argued with a teammate or can’t get on with a new art teacher Talk about this with a trusted adult or friend. That can help you decide whether you should stay and stick, or quit and move on.
Quitting doesn’t have to mean totally giving up, though. For example, playing an instrument might be more fun if you take away the pressure of exams. If you do decide to give up an activity, Bean suggests picking up another where you can still enjoy things like teamwork, creativity, and exercise.
31.Why does the writer use the example of Roger Federer in Paragraph 1
A. To show that we should never give up
B. To show that we should get away from trouble
C. To show that it’s all right to stop and quit
D. To show that it’s difficult to win Olympic medals
32.Why is learning to let go important according to Paragraph 2
A. Because we can learn about perseverance.
B. Because we can have enough money to spend.
C. Because we can live a busier and fuller life.
D. Because we can feel more confident in ourselves.
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in using Eric Bean’s saying in Paragraph 3
A. To stress that it’s not good to stick at things we don’t like.
B. To suggest that we should think twice before quitting an activity.
C. To prove that we don’t have to take exams to show our true abilities.
D. To explain that it’s wiser to pick up a new hobby than to keep the old one.
34.Which could be the best title for the passage
A. Knowing When to Stop B. Working Hard to Move on
C. Learning How to Grow up D. Starting Early to Make Changes

39.【答案】I'm Li Hua. I did a survey among 40 students in my class about how often they take part in volunteer activities. Here are the results.
According to the chart, 32 students sometimes join in volunteer activities, only 2 students seldom take part in such activities, and the remaining 6 students usually take part in volunteer work. This shows that most students take part in volunteer activities only sometimes, while very few of them seldom join in, and only a small number do it regularly.
From the results, I learn that many of us don't spend much time on these meaningful activities. Volunteer work not only helps people in need but also helps us learn more about society.
To encourage more students to join in, I have some advice. First, we can start with small activities like cleaning up the community or visiting the old people's home on weekends. Second, we can join the school volunteer club to take part in more activities. Let's all try to help others!
