Community Time Bank
The Community Time Bank is all about helping each other. Give your time to help others today, and they
will help you when you need it in the future. This makes the neighborhood warmer and friendlier. Small acts like
talking to the elderly, teaching them to use a smartphone, or picking up medicine can make the community a
better place.
How does it work
In the Time Bank, one hour of service is worth one credit (积分). Every new member gets 5 credits to start
with. You can use your points in two ways.
First, you can trade one credit for one hour of help from another volunteer. For example, someone can carry
heavy shopping for you.
Second, you can get everyday things with your credits in the Community Center.
Here are some everyday things you can get with your credits:
7 credits→ a notebook 8 credits → a bar of soap
10 credits→a haircut 13 credits →a warm scarf
15 credits→a small bag of rice
You can only use them for yourself, not for others.
How to join
Give help: Go to the Task Tree. There are many paper leaves. Each leaf is a task someone needs. Pick a
leaf, then call the task giver to set a time. After you help, you get credits.
Get help: Write your task on a paper leaf and hang it on the Task Tree. Someone will take your leaf and help
you. Then you pay them with your credits.

“He was homeless,” the shelter (收容所) worker said. “He needs a warm home to rest while his leg heals (康
复), then he’ll be ready for his new family. His name is Marshmallow.”
“Oh, hello, Marshmallow,” Caden greeted. He fell in love with the dog at once.
“Mom,” he said, “do we get to keep him ”
“For a little while,” his mom smiled.
“How long is a little while ” Caden asked.
“We don’t know yet. We’ll take care of him until he’s well enough to find a forever home,” Mom answered.
Caden forced a smile. Fostering (代养) a dog sounded fun, but giving it away later sounded terrible. His
family already had a dog named Tater Tot. But Caden thought it would be a good idea to have two dogs, or three, or
even four.
His parents always said one dog was enough. So he was surprised when Mom said they would foster a dog,
even though she made it clear they wouldn’t keep him.
Back home, Marshmallow’s leg healed quickly. He ran to play with Caden all day, and got along wonderfully
with Tater Tot. Seeing Marshmallow healthy, Caden’s heart was light and heavy. It meant Mom had started looking
for his new family.
The sad day finally came. Marshmallow’s new family, the Martins, would arrive to meet him. Mom told
Caden to be friendly, even though it was hard. The Martins came with their daughter Sofia, who was a little older
than Caden and had a shy smile.
In the backyard, Sofia played with Marshmallow happily. When she sat on the grass, Marshmallow went up
and lay down next to her. Caden saw how happy Marshmallow was with her.
“Looks like he’s found a new friend,” Mom said.
Caden’s heart ached, but he finally understood how it could be OK to let Marshmallow go to a new home. The
Martin family would love Marshmallow as much as he did.
“________,” Caden smiled.

A. Because Marshmallow had to leave him.

30. Which of the following can be put in ________

Using screens can be fun but spending too much time on them can make you miss out on other things.
Scientists suggest that teenagers shouldn’t have more than two hours of screen time a day. This is so you’ll have
time to do things that are good for you, like getting outside and moving around.
“Screen time is made to be tempting (吸引人的)!” says Jonathan Haidt. He studies how people think, feel and
act. His book for children and young people, The Amazing Generation, is a guide to managing screen time. He
explains screens use bright colours, messages, rewards and games to make people feel happy and excited. Soon
they will get lost in screens. Haidt thinks it’s important to know about the companies that make these products, and
how they are designed. That way you can make good decisions about the time you spend on screens.
It’s important to remember that not all time spent on screens is bad. “Some screen time can be good,” says
Haidt. Whether it’s watching a film with your family or using it to research your homework, screens can be useful.
However, if you spend all day on your phone or videos, they can quickly take over your life. “They catch your
attention, take up hours of your day, and leave you with nothing,” he says.
To avoid getting stuck into spending too much time on screens, Haidt suggests you try not to have your own
smartphone, or tablet, until you are around 14 or 16. “Ask your parents to give you a basic (基础的) phone before
then. It’s all you need to communicate with your friends, and it won’t take over your life the way a smartphone
will,” he says.
Once you’re older, try setting a timer to remind you when to take a break from your screen. Or make plans to
do other things, like meeting friends. That way you’ll have a reason to stop and you’ll have something fun to do.

Creative thinking means thinking in fresh and new ways instead of only memorizing textbook knowledge by
heart. 36 It helps you solve problems easily, makes study more enjoyable and lets you show your own
ideas bravely. It is not a talent for a few people. You can develop it well through simple daily activities.
One great way is to do brainstorming. When you get a topic, write down every thought that comes to your
mind at once. Do not stop to consider whether your ideas are good or not. 37 This simple way opens up
your mind and helps you find more creative answers quickly.
Hands-on creation is a wonderful way to develop your creative thinking and bring your imagination to life.
You can draw unfinished pictures and complete them freely. Turning your ideas into real small works lets your
imagination grow. 38 The joy of creating is the most important.
39 You can play the “What If” game with creative questions, or try to find more new uses for daily
things like an empty bottle. These activities activate (激活) your brain and make you good at thinking in different
ways.
Storytelling and role-playing help you express your creativity confidently. You can make up clear stories with
your own ideas. 40 It helps you organize your thoughts and speak up bravely, and also improves your
communication skills while showing your creative ideas.
Keep doing these easy and useful activities, and your creative thinking will improve day by day. This
important skill will bring great help to your English learning, final exams and future life.
