When you get a less desirable gift, people like to say, “It’s the thought that counts.” But with my mother’s
gifts, you’ve really got to wonder, “What thought was that exactly ”
My mother’s presents are never given to be mean; they are always presented with wide-eyed, innocent
excitement. “Do you like it ” she always asks proudly and expectantly, and we nod our heads while we try to
figure out what “it” is. Over the years, my mother’s Christmas presents have become well-known for the
amusement — and sometimes horror — that they could cause.
Once, she gave me a sweater in neon pink and printed with her own face on the front. I wear it when I miss
her, but also when I want to scare my friends. Another Christmas, I opened a box to find a wind-up (上发条的)
toy parrot that repeated everything I said in a creepy voice. Mom thought it would "keep me company." Several
years ago, she spent days working on a handmade clay sculpture (泥 雕塑 ): a lovingly crafted but scary
interpretation of my head. I took the clay head home and placed it on my bathroom counter as she told me to. I
soon discovered that few things would terrify my two-year-old child more than a small, strange-looking version of
his mother’s head staring at him while he was sitting on the toilet.
Someone asked me what I hoped to get for this Christmas from my mother. “Oh nothing,” I explained. You
don’t “hope” for gifts from her. They’re coming — whether you want them or not.
But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic love that comes with my mother’s gifts is the same love with
which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alone. She has always loved me for my boring personality
unconditionally, and I — with all my eyerolls and sighs by the Christmas tree — love her unconditionally as
well.
There’s no better gift to give your children than letting them know that they can be weird or awkward and
still feel unconditionally loved.
24. Why does the author ask the question in paragraph 1
A. To express concern about the gifts. B. To point out her mother’s lack of love.
C. To suggest her mom’s thoughtlessness. D. To stress the strange nature of the gifts.
25. Which of the following best describes the clay sculpture
A. Lovely. B. Expensive. C. Unimaginative. D. Horrifying.
26. What’s the author’s attitude toward her mother’s Christmas gifts according to paragraph 4
A. Hoping they will improve. B. Amused by their strangeness.
C. Accepting they’re unavoidable. D. Determined to prevent their arrival.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Gift Ideas for Loved Ones B. Special Love in Mother’s Gifts
C. Art of Accepting Unwanted Gifts D. Family Traditions of Giving Gifts
C
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the
conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue Social networking sites have
become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to
2
view your online activities and conversations with friends
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest
technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because
they had no need to be tech-savvy (精通技术的). However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just
how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate
themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have
around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we
feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand
we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have
something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no
longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When
a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could
mean that this is one part of their life where they want to enjoy their independence.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to
add them to your friends list.
28. Why do many parents want to learn about social networking sites
A. Because they are bored with their daily life. B. Because they start to realize their significance.
C. Because they are eager to explore technologies. D. Because they want to know about their children.
29. What is the main reason why teens reject their parents’ friend request
A. Their parents show no respect for their privacy.
B. They separate their friends from family members.
C. They fear that their privacy cannot be guaranteed.
D. Teens are impatient with teaching their parents about technology.
30. Why is the survey mentioned in paragraph 5
A. To comfort parents. B. To warn parents.
C. To challenge parents. D. To criticize parents.
31. What is most likely to be talked about next
A. How to bridge the generation gap. B. How to make friends on social networks.
C. How to explain to parents about the rejection. D. How to use the social networking sites wisely.
D
Politeness Effects in Directive Compliance (指示配合度): Effects with Power and Social Distance examines
how politeness influences whether individuals comply with (配 合 ) requests, and how this effect changes
depending on the power status and social distance between the people involved.
The researchers sought to understand three main questions: First, does politeness increase the likelihood that
someone will comply with a request Second, how does the power status of the requester affect compliance
Third, how does the social closeness or distance between the requester and the recipient influence the
effectiveness of politeness
To explore these questions, the researchers conducted a series of experiments where participants were given
requests that varied in politeness and came from people with different levels of power and different social
relationships. For example, some requests came from authority figures such as bosses, while others came from
colleagues or strangers. The social distance between the requester and recipient also varied from close
relationships to unfamiliar interactions.
3
First, participants were more likely to agree to requests made politely compared to direct or impolite
demands. Politeness appeared to ease social tension and made participants more willing to cooperate. Second,
requests made by individuals with higher authority were more likely to be followed. When a powerful person used
polite language, compliance rates were especially high. However, when a person with lower power made polite
requests, compliance improved but not to the same degree. Third, among close friends or acquaintances,
politeness had less impact on compliance because the relationship itself already encouraged cooperation. However,
in interactions involving strangers or distant social connections, politeness became a significant factor for gaining
compliance. It helped to bridge the social gap and form positive responses.
In conclusion, the study demonstrates that politeness is a key factor in securing compliance but its effect
depends on the context. Power status and social relationships guide how politeness is perceived (感知) and how
effective it is. Understanding these factors can improve communication and cooperation in various social and
professional settings. This research highlights the importance of polite communication, especially when dealing
with strangers or in ranked situations, and provides insight into how people manage social interactions to maintain
harmony and respect.
32. What is the main purpose of paragraph 1
A. To describe principles of the experiment.
B. To bring up the study’s main research content.
C. To explain the meaning of politeness in requests.
D. To discuss the effects of politeness and social distance.
33. Which of the following best explains “the recipient” in paragraph 2
A. The person who makes a request. B. The person who rejects a request.
C. The person who works with the requester. D. The person whom the request is directed to.
34. In which of the following situations is the requester most likely to get a “yes”
A. Amale colleague tells Cinderella to fetch a coffee for him at the cafe .
B. A stranger with no authority asks Samantha for her photo in a polite way.
C. A new friend directly demands Jane to pick him up at the airport at midnight.
D. The manager requests Johnson to send in the latest report when it is convenient.
35. What can we learn from the conclusion of the research
A. Power status and social closeness decide the success of requests.
B. Politeness is the only factor in the effect of people’s reply to requests.
C. Directive compliance depends on politeness, power, and social distance.
D. Politeness overpowers social distance or power when trying to gain compliance.

Dear fellow students,
With the approach of the Asian Games, The National Fitness Program is proceeding with full vigor. Here, on
behalf of the Students Union, I strongly advocate that every student should take an active part in it.
Initially, working out for one hour every day tops the list of my recommendation, during which time you can
jog, walk or swim to refresh your body and relax your mind. Besides, it is also advisable to grasp a sport skill,
such as playing table tennis and basketball, enabling us to maintain physical fitness and improve learning
efficiency in daily study. Last but not least, you are also supposed to join a sports club in our school, where not
only can you make more friends with similar hobbies but also sharpen your excellent skills through regular
training and practice.
Let’s work out and keep moving. You can build up your body, strengthen your willpower and fully
appreciate the unique charm of sports. After all, the greatest wealth is health.
