Does the news affect everyone equally Ideally, it should. Journalists and editors pick the stories
that appear on TV or in newspapers. Anyone who watches or reads these news sources will see the
same thing. But these days, many of us get our news stories from social media, and the experience
can ______65____ greatly from person to person.
On social media, the posts we see aren't selected by people. ______66____, they're in the hands of
algorithms(算法), computer programs run by the companies behind the apps or websites. As you use
these apps and websites, they may quietly collect your personal information. They may track your
searches and your "likes", among other things. Over time, they get a clear idea of your preferences.
Thanks to their smart algorithms, they can serve up what they think you'll ______67____. If a news
story doesn't match your interests, you might never see it. As a result, you may only see a very small
part of the world. This is called a filter bubble(信息茧房).
Living inside a filter bubble is like wearing glasses that only let you see one color. The real world
is much more colourful than that. Can we break free from our bubbles to see the ______68____
picture The answer is yes. Here are three tips you can try:
Discover and use different sources. When searching for information, don't always ______69____
7
your go-to websites. Use different ones, including those you've heard of but not yet tried.
Go offline. Don't trust everything you see on social media. It's always good to talk with people in
your real life. Share what you've read, and ask them what they've seen. Have discussions with friends
about their sources.
Keep an ______70____ mind. When you read a news story online, don't stop at the one you see.
Ask yourself questions and try to find out more. Look for other reports about the same event and
compare what different people say. By exploring further, you may discover parts of the story that the
algorithm didn't show you.

A child and a man were walking on the beach when the child found a shell and held it to his ear.
Suddenly he heard strange, low, musical sounds. These sounds seemed to be from another world and
the child listened to them with w______71______. Then the man said that the child heard nothing
strange, and that the shell caught a range of sounds too faint for human ears. What amazed the child
was not a new world, but the unnoticed music of the old.
Some such experience as this lies in store for us when we begin the study of literature. Let a
little song appeal to the ear, or a great book to the heart, and we draw a new world, a world of
dreams and magic. To enter and enjoy this new world, we need to love literature, and make an effort
to e______72______ it. That means trying to make clear what the writer wants to say and the
meaning hidden in the book. Behind every book is a man, behind the man is the race, and behind the
race are the natural and social environments. We must know all these, if the book is to speak its
whole message. In a word, we have now reached a point where we wish to enjoy and understand
literature. The first step is to determine some of its significant qualities.
The first quality of literature is its description of truth and beauty. Some truth and beauty remain
unnoticed until a sensitive human soul brings them to our a______73______, noticing the small
8
details that others often overlook. A hundred men may pass a field and see only d______74______
grass; but a poet stops, looks deeper, sees life and beauty, and writes, "Yesterday's flowers am I."
The second quality of literature is its appeal to our imagination. Its attraction lies more in what
it awakens in us than what it says. When Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus asks in the presence
of Helen, "Was this the face that launched a thousand ships " he opens a door which leads us to a
new world, a world of love, beauty and heroism.
The third quality of literature, coming out of the other two, is its permanence(永恒性 ). To
a______75______ this, it should contain two elements: universal interest and personal style. Good
literature reflects the most basic of human n______76______—love and hate, joy and sadness, fear
and hope. It also takes on a personal style—no writer can describe human life without reflecting his
own life and experiences.
In summary, literature is the expression of life in forms of truth and beauty, the
r______77______ of man's thoughts and feelings, and the history of the human soul.
D. Answer the questions (根据对话内容回答下列问题) (共 12 分)
The match was nearly over and I was almost on my last legs, when I saw a chance. I picked the
ball up from Sally.
“Jess!” I heard Jules shouting as she ran alongside me. “Pass!”
I glanced up and hit the ball forward into space. Jules picked it up and hit the ball into the net. It
was just as good as Beckham’s last-minute goal against Greece. Jules ran into me and I jumped on
her, followed by the rest of the team. We were all screaming with joy. The referee(裁判) had to hurry
us back to the centre circle, but one minute later he blew the whistle for full-time. A draw(平局).
“Penalties(点球大战),” Jules said, with a wide smile on her face.
Although it wasn’t usual to finish a friendly with penalties, both sides had decided that it would
be a nice idea. Now, with my legs shaking, I wasn’t so sure.
Our coach, Joe, came on to cheer us up. Maybe he wouldn’t choose me. “OK, Jules, you go
first,” Joe said. “Then Mel, Tina, Hannah and —” he turned to me “— Jess.” I tried not to look
relieved that I was last. With any luck I wouldn’t have to take my turn, if the match was decided
before that.
The Germans went first and scored. So did Jules, with a powerful shot. The Germans scored
again. So did Mel. After a third German goal, Tina looked nervous, but she was lucky because her
9
shot went in off the post(球门柱).
My stomach was turning over and over as Hannah stepped up to take our fourth penalty. The
Germans hadn’t missed one yet. If Hannah scored, *it* would be all down to the last German
penalty-taker — and me.
Hannah sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and rolled the ball smoothly into the net. I tried to
take deep breaths to calm myself down. If the next German player scored, I’d have to take my turn. I
closed my eyes, hoping she would fail.
A loud cheer went up around the stadium. Then the referee called me over, and with heavy
steps, I walked over to place the ball on the spot. Behind me, I heard the girls yelling encouragement.
“Come on, Jess! You can do this.” I made a superhuman effort and ran towards the ball.
_________.
78. Who helped score a goal near the end of the match
79. Why did the referee hurry them back to the centre circle
80. How did the two teams perform in the first four rounds of penalties
81. What does “it” refer to in the sentence “If Hannah scored, it would be all down to the last
German penalty-taker — and me.”
82. What can we infer from the sentence A loud cheer went up around the stadium
83. The story stops at: “I made a superhuman effort and ran towards the ball.” Imagine what happens
next and write an ending including her feeling and the result. (no more than 30 words)
