Natasha Tucker’s passion for fighting plastic pollution began with a shocking moment.
While working at the Vancouver Aquarium, Tucker met a rescued dolphin whose fins were partially cut off due to fishing equipment entanglement(缠绕). This heartbreaking experience made Tucker immediately search for a way to take action against the plastic pollution that caused these injuries. “I saw immediately that this was because of us,” she says. “I knew I had to do something. Then, I found Mind Your Plastic.”
That aquarium encounter was not the only experience that inspired Tucker to action. Other experiences like working in retail(零售) management came with witnessing tons of plastic waste. “I saw how much got thrown out, and it didn’t sit well with me,” she says.
Plastic waste in business is among what Mind Your Plastic is seeking to end via its three key programs: the Circular Economy Ambassador Program(CEAP) for educators and youth, the Plastic-Free Events Policy Program for municipalities(市政当局) and the Plastic Awareness and Reduction Toolkits (PART) Program for businesses.
When people donate to Mind Your Plastic, their dollars directly support these programs and help them effect change. Through direct partnerships with local educators, municipalities and businesses, these programs connect Canadians with direct ways to take action. The CEAP program, for example, helps teachers educate youth about the circular economy, lead local cleanups, and track collected waste.
The blame game is another area in need of transition, according to Tucker, who says that big companies, not customers, should carry the responsibility to solve Canada’s plastic pollution problem.
“It’s felt for a long time like the responsibility is placed on the customers,” says Tucker. “That needs to stop.” Tucker says this perspective(观点) can be shifted by individuals creating public pressures — for example, pushing for policy — and using their dollars to support more sustainable, circular alternatives until these policy changes happen.
4. What first inspired Natasha Tucker’s passion for fighting plastic pollution
A. Working in retail management.
B. Witnessing tons of plastic waste.
C. Meeting an injured dolphin.
D. Finding Mind Your Plastic.
5. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean
A. Tucker was dissatisfied with her job there.
B. Tucker couldn’t find a comfortable seat there.
C. Tucker thought it a heavy task to manage the waste.
D. Tucker felt uneasy about the large quantity of the waste.
6. According to the text, how does Mind Your Plastic aim to effect change
A. By blaming consumers for plastic waste.
B. By providing education and partnership.
C. By quarreling with big businesses.
D. By stopping using plastic products.
7. What does Tucker think about the current situation
A. Responsibility is fairly shared.
B. Customers are wrongly blamed.
C. Companies are doing enough.
D. Policymakers show little action.

If there was to be a praise to the frog, it would have to contain one new piece of information: its ability to predict earthquakes. A scientific study has suggested that they escape an area just before such a disaster strikes.
The evidence, published yesterday in the Journal of Zoology, centres on a population of breeding (繁殖) frogs in Italy. It seems that, a few years ago, these creatures had suddenly escaped from their home five days before an earthquake struck their breeding ground.
The frogs’ ability to sense the earthquake is not fully understood, but 96 percent of male frogs escaped and returned a day after the danger had passed. This discovery confused Dr Rachel Grant, who hadn’t set out to learn about frogs’ reactions to earthquakes, but to study the effect of the lunar cycle on them. She now believes that frogs may be able to sense some signs and use them as an early-warning system for earthquakes.
Frogs are not the only creatures born with an unusual power to predict natural disasters. In 2004, elephants in Thailand made loud noises before the tsunami hit, while bats in Sri Lanka flew around in anxiety before the disaster.
While most of these animal warnings have been ignored, there are times when they have been noticed. In 1975, scientists in Haicheng, China, noticed unusual behaviour in the city’s dogs and cats. They demanded the evacuation (撤离) of the city, expecting a major disaster. Their warning came five-and-a-half hours before an earthquake struck, resulting in 2,000 deaths. Without the evacuation, another 150,000 people could have been killed.
“There are things we can’t see and sounds we can’t hear. But many animals can. There is a sense called electroperception that fish and sharks use to form a picture around them, while dolphins and bats use sonar to find their way around,” says Professor Daniel Mills, an expert in animal behaviour at Lincoln University.
8. What did Dr Rachel Grant think of the discovery of the frogs’ unusual behaviour
A. Worried. B. Unexpected.
C. Disappointed. D. Scared.
9. How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed
A. By giving examples.
B. By listing numbers.
C. By explaining causes.
D. By making comparisons.
10. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the earthquake in Haicheng
A. To stress the seriousness of the disaster.
B. To praise the government’s timely action.
C. To describe a successful evacuation in history.
D. To show the benefit of noticing animal warnings.
11. What are Professor Daniel Mills’s words mainly about
A. Why animals can sense disasters.
B. What his study will focus on next.
C. How humans learn about the world.
D. How animals behave before disasters.

Is text-messaging driving us apart These days, we talk to each other a lot with our thumbs — sending six billion text messages a day, and likely a few billion more on services like WhatsApp.
But some worry that so much messaging leads to less communication. “Our texts are fine,” one college student said. “It’s what texting does to our conversations when we are together that’s the problem.”
New technologies often upset the way we relate to one another, of course. But such conflict caused by texting has a strong echo to the arguments we had over the telephone a hundred years ago. The small device gave us a new way to contact one another and quickly promote new forms of socializing. Callers arranged regular “visiting” calls, calling remote family to catch up on news.
Soon, though, social critics began to wonder: Was all this phone chatter good for us Would it be so easy to talk that we’d never leave each other alone “Thanks to the telephone, motor car and such like inventions, our neighbors have it in their power to turn our leisure into a series of interruptions,” complained an American professor in 1929. “We shall soon be nothing but transparent masses of jelly (果冻) to each other,” a London writer said sadly in 1897.
However, nowadays the telephone call seems like a return to a gentler era. When Jenna Birch, a communication professor at the University of Iowa, started dating a man who insisted on calling her on the phone, she found it warm and delightful. So she doesn’t think the shift to texting has made our interactions worse. According to her study, teenagers who text the most are also those who spend the most time face to face with munication, it seems, brings more communication, and — as she argues — just because talk happens in text doesn’t mean it’s not meaningful.
Michele Martin of Carleton University, thinks we’re living through a replay of the telephone, where the things that made it valuable — instant communications — are the same that made it annoying. “People believe they are free because they can bring the mobile phone everywhere,” Martin says. “But at the same time, they are slaves to it.”
12. What’s the function of the first paragraph
A. To state the author’s opinion.
B. To offer an argument.
C. To describe a scene.
D. To sound a warning.
13. What is the main concern of social critics about the telephone in paragraph 4
A. It creates overly busy schedules.
B. It results in a lack of individuality.
C. It reduces social interaction.
D. It leads to a loss of private time.
14. What can we learn from Jenna Birch’s study
A. Texting is particularly welcomed among teenagers.
B. Communication is meaningful only face-to-face.
C. The meaning of communication goes beyond medium.
D. Texting allows for a deeper level of communication.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Oh My God! We’ve Been Here Before!
B. Gone with the Wind, Dear Texting!
C. Life Is Too Short for So Much Texting
D. Oh, Telephone, a Tale of Two Sides

Many people think they need to walk 10,000 steps every day to be healthy. But new research shows this is not necessarily true for everyone. Scientists say that about 7,000 steps per day can already be good for your health. ___16___
Dr. Melody Ding did this study at the University of Sydney. ___17___ She wanted to know how many steps people need to stay healthy, and whether one number could work for most adults. The studies included people of different ages and lifestyles, so the results were more reliable.
___18___ People who walked around 7,000 steps were healthier than those who walked only about 2,000. In general, walking more was linked to a lower risk of dying early, and a lower risk of heart disease and dementia (痴呆). The benefits increased quickly when people moved from very low activity to a moderate level. After that, the benefits still continued, but they rose more slowly.
Where does the 10,000 — step benchmark (基准) come from Dr. Sean Heffron says this number did not come from science. ___19___ A company made a pedometer (计步器) and called it the “10,000 steps meter”. The number sounded simple and motivating, so it spread worldwide.
Dr. Martha Gulati, a heart doctor, does not fully trust round numbers like 10,000 because they are not always based on research. She suggests focusing on steady improvement instead of chasing one perfect number. ___20___ Just walk a little more than you do now — take the stairs, walk after dinner, or get off the bus one stop earlier. Small changes can add up and help your health.
A. The number was easy to remember.
B. The study gave people a simple answer.
C. It became popular because of advertising in Japan.
D. She reviewed many studies about walking and health.
E. If you can’t walk 10,000 steps every day, don’t worry.
F. The research compared people who walked different amounts each day.
G. This may make many people feel less stressed, especially those who are busy.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Andy and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the house was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Andy and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once an intelligent explorer. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs… How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Andy said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Andy shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Andy’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

56. aiming 此处考查状语从句的省略。完整结构为 while we are aiming for economic development,当从句主语与主句主语一致且含有be动词时,可省略主语和be动词,保留现在分词。故填 aiming。
57. plays 空格前 Norgate Environmental Protection Committee 为单数机构名,作主语视为第三人称单数。文章整体时态为一般现在时,陈述该机构的主要职责,故用 plays。
58. to observe 此处 have been made for business ________中,for business 后接不定式作目的状语或定语,表示“供企业遵守”。make sth for sb. to do 为固定结构,意为“制定……供某人做”。
59. for 固定搭配 a task for sb./sth.,表示“对……而言是一项任务”。前文提到抗击污染不仅仅是工厂和政府的事,此处缺介词引出责任主体。
60. Earth's 空格后为名词 oxygen,需用名词所有格表示“地球的氧气”。专有名词 Earth 后加's。
61. used 此处 species 后跟后置定语,use 与 species 之间为被动关系(物种被用于食物或药物)。be used for 省略be动词,直接以过去分词作定语,相当于 which are used for…。
62. irreplaceable 根据语境,此处表达“不可替代的动植物”。括号给出 replaceable(可替代的),需加否定前缀 ir-形成反义形容词。
63. are left 主句为 we ________ with a question,主语 we 与动词 leave 构成被动关系“我们被留下一个问题”。时态与上文 becomes 保持一致,用一般现在时的被动语态 are left。
64. an 空格后 orderly line 为可数名词单数形式,且 orderly 发音以元音音素开头,故填不定冠词 an。
65. After/When 空格所在句子结构为“________ a roll call confirmed… they relaxed”,前后两个分句之间缺连词引导时间状语从句。根据语义“点名确认全体安然无恙之后 / 当点名确认……时,他们放松下来”,After 或 When 均符合逻辑。

Save Water—Build a Greener Campus
We are no strangers to water waste in our campus. Some students often leave taps running carelessly after washing hands, and others casually pour away unfinished drinking water. Such small but thoughtless acts are in fact draining our precious resources.
Therefore, I'd like to call on everyone to take immediate actions. Firstly, we should raise awareness of water conservation and form good habits. Turn off taps promptly after use and avoid any unnecessary waste. Additionally, we can reuse water in daily life to maximize its value, such as collecting spare clean water to water classroom plants or to flush toilets.
Water conservation is a duty, not an option. Let's join hands and make every drop count.

Berlin__thought__it__was__a__good__idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather's house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. Jack said, “What kind of tree should we pick for the walking stick?” Berlin thought for a moment and said, “I think we should choose a straight tree, so no knots will scratch Grandpa's hands.” Jack nodded his head in agreement. They found a straight tree and set to work. They cut the tree down, and with a knife they took the bark off. It was a wonderful tree, which was smooth and was just of the right size. They thought Grandpa would love it.
Jack__and__Berlin__handed__the__cane__to__Grandpa. When Grandpa took the cane, his hands shook with joy, thinking, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack said, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods.” Grandpa smiled and decided to give it a try so as not to make his grandchildren disappointed. He held the cane in his right hand and the arm of his chair in his left hand. He stood up with strength on his legs. Everyone was surprised and excited to see Grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed a tear coming from the corner of his grandfather's eye.

M: I'd like to drive to the concert, but my brother will drive the car to the cinema with his friends tonight.
W: We can take the bus if we go a little earlier.
M: When is the concert on
W: It starts at 7:00 pm.
M: There's not much time left. We'd better take a taxi.
W: OK.
Text 7 假期活动
M: How was your holiday
W: Great. I took a roller skating course. It was really interesting.
M: What about Albert
W: He learned to cook Chinese dishes—he wants to work as a food writer.
M: Zena went to the same holiday camp, didn't she
W: Yes, but she had a week of Spanish dancing lessons.
M: Is Mick on holiday too
W: No, he went to another city to attend a music contest there.
Text 8 默契度考验
M: Alice, let's play a game and see how well we know each other.
W: OK, go ahead. I bet I know all about you.
M: Start now! What's my favorite pet
W: Cat. It's my turn. Where am I from
M: Er…I know it's the USA, but which city…Washington or San Francisco
W: Oh, my God, we've known each other for almost two years, but you have no idea where I'm from. I'm from Chicago.
M: I'm sorry. Try to ask me another question. I'm sure I'll be right this time.
W: Well, what's my favorite food
M: I like hamburgers best, and you like sandwiches best, right
W: You broke my heart. I'm different. Seafood is my favorite.
Text 9 不付诸实践的梦想
W: What are you doing, Mike It's already 7:30.
M: It's Saturday, Mum. And I don't go to school. I need a big change. I'm going to get a haircut.
W: Oh. That's a really big change for you.
M: It's just the beginning. I'm going to give up some of my bad habits too.
W: Uh-huh. How is it possible
M: I'm not kidding! I really want to change. And when I'm rich and famous…
W: Oh, I remember, you're going to become a famous race car driver.
M: No. That was last week.
W: You're going to be a rock star
M: No way! I can't sing. I'm going to write a book that sells a million copies.
W: That sounds great. So what's it going to be about
M: I don't know yet. But I know it starts with a guy who wants to get a haircut. And then maybe he becomes a super cool movie star or…
W: I really can't stand those daydreams any more. Maybe I need a change first. Get out of bed now, or do you need me to get you out
Text 10 天气预报
M: This is Radio One. It's six o'clock in the morning, and here is the local news. The bad weather has again brought lots of trouble in the local areas. Though the wind stopped, the heavy snow which has been falling since yesterday afternoon has caused great difficulty. So please do not drive to town. If you must go to town, take a bus or take a train to be safe. Some schools in the countryside are closed. The students and teachers have not been able to get to school. In the city itself, however, schools open as usual. It's going to snow all day today, and it will last at least two days. Bad news for many, although I guess kids would be happy. Well, that's the news at six o'clock. The next news will be in two hours. And now let's have some light music.
