When I was a child, I would never run in the playground. While my friends were playing “tag”, I was sat on the sidelines unfortunately unable to play at their level. I remember an old photograph from a sports day in which my peers (同龄人) are all close to the finish line while I struggle at the halfway point.
By the time I was about 12 years old, I was using a wheelchair as my condition continued to worsen. Within an appointment with my doctor, he suggested cutting off my right leg. After hearing that, my heart immediately sank but the little cogs (轮齿) in my mind started moving. I had a foot that wasn’t working so why not just cut it off in order to get a new one.
I was wheeled down to surgery and after a quick injection, I was one sleep away from the start of my new life. I remember, the next day, I felt a rush of energy, as I was no longer in pain. I went privately in June 2017 and was fitted with a walking leg.
The doctor told me to be extremely careful with my walking leg. Despite this, I felt great: My mindset was changing and I started to see the world from a much taller level. No longer was I at the height of a child, I was walking and was going to be running as a young man. I started with 10-mile courses, initially (开始) walking most of the course until I could eventually run most of it. I completed events that I had never thought would be possible. The London Marathon, 36 Tough Mudder events, the World Judo Games … I was named British Judo’s Inclusion Player of the Year, and am now ranked top three in the world for judo.
I run because I couldn’t and I run for those that can’t. I run to show others that they are able to do things that they never thought would be possible and I run because I’m a runner.

AI has caught the spirit of the times in recent years, especially since the appearance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022. As AI is catching on, it promises to change learning for the better.
Already, there are AI-powered tutoring (辅导) tools that can support learners. One 2024 study, led by the University of Oxford, found that school students in Ghana who used an AI-powered math tutor through WhatsApp for half an hour, twice a week, over eight months, had “higher” math growth scores than those in a control group.
“Until now, expert, personalized tutoring has been too expensive for people,” points out Joseph South, chief officer at the International Society for Technology in Education. “AI-powered tutors can offer this experience for online learners at an affordable price.”
However, there are still possible problems to deal with. AI can present imaginary things as facts, which could mean students might “learn” incorrect information. Similarly, AI can develop biases (偏见) according to the collected information used to train it, and possibly pass them on to learners. Besides, experts warn that any educational organization needs to have strict rules on what student personal information can be fed into AI tools, to reduce privacy (隐私) risks.
But, to some, the biggest risk is to the learning process. “As students increasingly depend on AI tools, they may use them as quick solutions, which will influence their ability to pick up basic learning skills.” says Emily DeJeu, professor of business management communication at Carnegie Mellon University. “Is that good for them in the long term?” she asks, “This is still an open question.”
To protect students, she suggests “we need government rules to provide guidance to schools”. And she adds: “The greatest risk of all with AI is doing nothing. The world has changed and is changing. We should change how we teach and what we teach to welcome AI.”
8. What was an important finding of the 2024 study in Ghana?
A. Students lost interest in maths.
B. Students preferred AI tutors to human ones.
C. AI tutors improved students’ communication skills.
D. Students with AI tutoring showed higher maths progress.
9. What is the biggest risk about AI-powered tutoring according to Emily DeJeu?
A. Students might lose basic learning skills.
B. AI could increase school management costs.
C. AI may provide wrong knowledge for students.
D. Teachers may face the situation of losing jobs.
10. What does Emily DeJeu suggest about using AI in education?
A. Welcome it without changes. B. Protect students’ privacy.
C. Make guiding rules for schools. D. Stop using it for doing homework.
11. In which part of a magazine can we read the passage?
A. Business and culture. B. Science and technology.
C. Literature and art. D. Health and lifestyle.
D
Dark chocolate is often seen as a healthier choice. Many people believe it can help with problems like high blood pressure and even improve mental sharpness. But is this really true? Scientific evidence presents a more complex and less encouraging picture.
The health reputation of dark chocolate mainly comes from a compound called flavanols (黄烷醇), which are found in cocoa beans. Some studies, particularly those funded by the chocolate industry, suggest that these flavanols are beneficial. However, independent and more detailed research often fails to support these exciting claims.
Research on flavanols comes in different forms. Some short-term experiments showed that flavanols could slightly lower blood pressure. But the results across many studies are not consistent. Other studies, called observational studies, simply ask people about their diets. They found that individuals who consume more flavanols tend to be healthier, whereas this correlation does not equal causation. These people might be healthier for other reasons, such as having higher incomes, better overall diets, or being less likely to smoke.
To overcome these limitations, a large-scale trial named COSMOS was conducted. It involved thousands of older adults who took daily flavanol supplements for several years. The findings were revealing: while the supplements did not reduce the risk of developing diseases like diabetes, heart attacks, or cancer, they did lead to a significant 27% reduction in deaths from cardiovascular disease (心血管疾病).
Despite this single positive outcome, it is crucial not to misinterpret it. Achieving the same dose of flavanols used in the study by eating dark chocolate would be problematic. One would have to consume large amounts, which also means ingesting high levels of added sugar and saturated fats (饱和脂肪) — both known to be harmful to heart health. Therefore, getting flavanols from dark chocolate is not an efficient or healthy strategy. Healthier alternatives include pure cocoa powder, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and green tea.
While dark chocolate can be enjoyed as a tasty treat, its health benefits have been greatly overstated. The idea that it is a health food appears to be rooted more in clever marketing than in solid scientific evidence.
12. What is the main reason to question the health claims about dark chocolate?
A. It is only eaten on special occasions. B. It lacks support from solid scientific research.
C. It has been replaced by other healthier foods. D. Its ability to improve mental sharpness is unproven.
13. What can we infer about observational studies?
A. They are the most reliable type of scientific study.
B. They prove that dark chocolate is the healthiest food.
C. Their results might be influenced by other factors.
D. They focus on the effects of smoking rather than overall diets.
14. Why does the author mention “added sugar and saturated fats” in Paragraph 5?
A. To explain why dark chocolate tastes bitter.
B. To suggest that people should eat more dark chocolate.
C. To prove that all dark chocolate is harmful to heart disease.
D. To show that dark chocolate is not the best source of flavanols.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Sweet Truth: Dark chocolate is a Superfood
B. Flavanols: The Secret to a Long Life
C. The COSMOS Study: A Final Proof for chocolate?
D. Dark chocolate: A Healthy Treat or a Marketing Trick?

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, I read a very sad story about a police dog named Solo that had been sent into a building to catch a suspect (嫌犯). The last thing Solo did before entering the building was to lick his owner’s face. A few minutes later, Solo was shot and killed in the line of duty. I knew how sad that officer must have felt because my own dog, Kela, had recently died.
The article went on to tell about a fundraiser (募捐活动) that was going on to help buy bulletproof vests (防弹背心) for the police dogs there. I thought every police dog should be protected just like the police. I may be a kid, but why can’t I do a fundraiser to help save the dogs in our area?
Then 1 found out that a bulletproof vest for a police dog costs $475. My mom thought it was a lot of money for an eleven-year-old girl to raise, but she told me to go ahead and try anyway.
We called our local Oceanside Police Department and learned that their dogs needed bulletproof vests. At that point, I realized that I needed a name for the fundraiser and thought since I was trying to protect just one dog’s life, I would call my program Vest A Dog.
I decided that vet offices and pet stores would be really good places to go with donation boxes and Vest A Dog fliers (传单). I used little green take-out boxes, decorated with a picture of Tiko, the dog I chose to vest, and me. I wrote on each box “Help protect the life of a police dog by donating a dollar.”
One afternoon, after all the boxes had been placed throughout our community, I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen one of my fliers. The reporter decided to do an article about Vest A Dog. That ought to spread the word, I thought. I asked officer Jim Wall, who is Tiko’s partner, if they would have their picture taken with me for the article and they did.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
After the article came out, I eagerly checked to see if there were any donations. Every day after school, I rushed to each location, hoping to find the boxes filled with contributions. To my delight, I started noticing more and more people stopping by the boxes, curious about Vest A Dog and willing to donate. Children were emptying their piggy banks, while adults were digging into their wallets for spare change or even writing checks. The community's response was overwhelming, and my heart swelled with gratitude.
About three weeks later, I counted the money from all of the boxes. With trembling hands, I separated the bills and coins, triple-checking each count. The total amount astounded me – it was far beyond what I had ever imagined. We had managed to raise not just enough for one vest, but sufficient funds for multiple vests. I couldn't wait to share the news with Officer Jim Wall and Tiko. Their joy and appreciation upon hearing the update was priceless and I realized that no dream is too big, and even a young heart can make a significant impact.
