Junji’s initial excitement upon arriving in the French town of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie for his semester abroad quickly gave way to a more complex emotion born of a growing list of worries — the unfamiliar climate, the fast-paced local language threatening to make his classroom French useless, and heavy traffic in the ancient narrow streets, yet one concern stood apart: a fear that it would be tough to fit in with the new eating pattern. What he had not anticipated, however, was that the real challenge would be social barriers, which seemed to be rooted in the very fabric of daily life.
On his third day, he wandered into a local bakery. He just pointed to a golden cake, and the baker, a woman named Sylvie, stopped for a moment and then served him in silence. When Junji paid, he said, “Thanks!” Sylvie replied with a phrase “S’il vous pla?t”. Junji, assuming this was part of a polite goodbye, hurried out of the door, saying “Au revoir”. The following morning, he tried to greet his hostess Madame Moreau with a casual “Hey”, only to be met with a quiet response. Moreau explained that in France, entering a home or beginning a conversation without the formality of “Bonjour” was often perceived not as a simple mistake, but as disrespect.
The real moment of confusion, however, occurred during a community dinner. An elderly neighbor, Gaston, offered Junji a taste of his wine. Junji, wanting to be polite, declined with a wave of his hand, a gesture he considered perfectly friendly. Gaston seemed taken aback and grew so awkward. Later, Moreau explained that dealing with such an offer from an elder like that could be misinterpreted as rejecting friendship and community. In a society that valued such connections, accepting, even just symbolically, was the expected bridge.
It was then that Junji understood. His challenge was about decoding a whole new set of unwritten rules. He realized that learning to read the hidden intentions that floated beneath the surface of every interaction was crucial.
4. What bothered Junji most initially when he got to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie?
A. The fear of local socializing. B. His trouble with the local language.
C. The unfamiliar local climate. D. His lack of adaptation to the local diet.
5. What was Junji’s misstep in the local bakery?
A. He used informal responses. B. He left without any word.
C. He pointed rudely at the cake. D. He failed to greet the baker.
6. Why did Gaston feel embarrassed during the community dinner?
A. Junji talked with him symbolically. B. Junji gave an inappropriate gift to him.
C. Junji incorrectly refused his invitation. D. Junji tasted his wine without comment.
7. What does Junji’s experience indicate?
A. Cultural gap influences our communication.
B. We overcome culture shock by exploring it.
C. We should welcome cross-cultural lifestyles.
D. Culture can help discipline our daily behaviors.

As wildfires spread across forests and grasslands, they give off large amounts of gases and tiny particles (颗粒) into the air. Scientists now believe we may not have fully understood how much pollution these fires cause. A study reported in Environmental Science & Technology shows that wildfires around the world likely produce far more gases that harm air quality than earlier studies had suggested. The research also points out that in several areas, pollution from fires joins together with pollution from human activities, making air quality worse.
Every year, wildfires burn through huge areas of plants, sending a complex mix of chemicals into the atmosphere. These include VOCs that easily form in the air, plus IVOCs and SVOCs, which need higher heat to turn into gas and more readily become tiny particles. When people breathe in these particles, they can be harmful to health. However, they are often not studied when scientists look at what wildfires release (排放). Their large quantity and chemical complexity make measurement difficult, leading past assessments to focus primarily on VOCs.
To solve this problem, Shuxiao Wang’s team tried to include IVOCs and SVOCs along with VOCs in their study to better understand how wildfires affect air quality, human health, and the climate. The team first analyzed a global database of burnt land from 1997 to 2023. Then they collected information about the chemicals released when different plants burn. When they could not get direct measurements from real fires, they used lab experiments to estimate the chemicals produced. By putting all this information together, they worked out yearly worldwide wildfire emissions (排放).
The results showed that wild land fires released an average of 143 million tons of chemicals yearly — about 21% higher than previous estimates. The team also found that although human activities produce more pollution overall, both wildfires and human activities release similar amounts of IVOCs and SVOCs. This finding highlights the greater-than-expected role of wildfires, particularly through IVOC and SVOC emissions, in reducing air quality. Different plans are needed to reduce pollution from both wildfires and human activities.
8. What does the author want to point out in paragraph 1?
A. Wildfires are spreading faster than before.
B. Wildfires are the main cause of air pollution.
C. Human activities pollute the air more than wildfires.
D. Fire-related air pollution is more serious than known.
9. Why were IVOCs and SVOCs often left out in earlier studies?
A. They are hard to measure accurately. B. They disappear quickly in the air.
C. Their effect on climate is insignificant. D. Their existence remained unknown.
10. Which best describes the study led by Shuxiao Wang’s team?
A. Thorough and data-driven. B. Regional but well-recorded.
C. Theoretical and model-based. D. Limited but system-building.
11. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Current policies fully control wildfire pollution.
B. Wildfires and human activities require emission cuts.
C. More research is needed on chemicals emissions.
D. Reducing human-caused pollution is less essential.
D
What’s your best friend’s phone number? Don’t feel bad if you couldn’t answer off the top of your head. You have no reason to commit phone numbers to memory: it’s just there in your phone. Or perhaps you once had a phone book to store them. In either case, an object does the remembering for you.
“Prosthetic memory” (外部辅助记忆) is nothing new. Writing itself has been a means of storing information.-Yet the information revolution has generated more data than ever before. We are flooded with information. We’re creating more of it and keeping more of it. The storage capacity of the human brain has since been scanty. No wonder, then, that we’re increasingly dependent on memory prostheses, from libraries to smartphones.
Not everyone thinks this trend in external memory is good. Historically, memory prostheses were expensive. As technologies such as printing and photography become more affordable, sharing experiences with others is easier than ever. So every breakfast, every sunset, every encounter with a cat finds its way on to social media. And here comes the worry. When we devote ourselves to capturing and sharing the world in this way, something immensely valuable is lost; when recording so much of our lives, we’re forgetting to actually live them, and so disconnect ourselves from experience.
But is our social media-driven transformation wholly bad? If we’re still creating and sharing memories like this, perhaps this is because we’ve not had sufficient time to learn how to do these things without thinking about what we’re doing. It is easy to ignore that the mass social media era is less than a decade old. That’s just a short blink in human history, yet it has totally changed how we live. I suspect we’re not far off from being directly faced with experience yet with the ability to share experience in ways less bounded by geography and time. After all, technology can protect all the moments of a life that would otherwise be lost.
12. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. Technology weakens our brains. B. We rely more on tools to memorize.
C. We are burdened with phone numbers. D. Technology distances us from our friends.
13. What does the underlined word “scanty” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. insufficient. B. stable. C. enhanced. D. outdated.
14. What negative effect does online sharing bring about?
A. An overflow of posts. B. High cost of digital devices.
C. Loss of authentic experience. D. Addiction to the virtual world.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Prosthetic Memory: A New Invention Changing Our Lives
B. Technology Revolution: How It Replaces Human Memory
C. External Memory: Blessing or curse for Human Memory?
D. Social Media: Is It Making Us Lose Our Ability to Remember?

Jane had a deep affection for birds. Every morning, she scattered (抛撒) seeds in her backyard and whispered, “Good morning, my little friends!” To her, their songs sounded like cheerful laughter, and she often laughed along with them.
However, her neighbor, Mr. Thompson, didn’t share her joy. He was constantly annoyed by the birds that flew into his yard. “They’re too noisy!” he complained. “And they make such a mess in MY yard!” His sharp words made Jane feel quite uneasy, yet she refused to give up on her feathered friends. She firmly believed that every small creature deserved care.
One morning, Jane discovered a small sparrow (麻雀) shaking under the fence. One of its wings looked bent at a painful angle. Filled with worry, Jane carefully picked it up and named it Pip. She placed him in a small, warm basket in a safe corner right next to the fence.
A week passed. Pip was getting better but still unable to fly. One afternoon, while Jane was feeding Pip by the fence, Mr. Thompson shouted from his side, “You’re just asking for trouble!” Jane gently lifted Pip in her hands so Mr. Thompson could see him through the gaps in the fence. “Look, Mr. Thompson. Pip’s wing is hurt.” Mr. Thompson cast an impatient glance at the tiny creature. For a moment, his frown (皱眉) softened. “That wing...” he said softly, almost to himself.
Just then, Jane’s mother called her from the driveway, saying they were leaving for a family visit. Jane waved a quick goodbye to Pip and hurried to the car. However, on their way home, a heavy storm broke out. Watching the trees shaking in the strong wind, Jane felt very worried about Pip, who was left all alone in the yard. The moment they pulled into the driveway, she dashed toward the backyard, calling Pip’s name.

【答案】Dear Student Union,
I am writing to apply for the position of Student Sports Promotion Ambassador. Learning from China National Radio that 80% of Chinese teenagers lack enough exercise, I’m eager to respond to the ?“Sunshine Sports” call and help my peers build a healthy exercise habit.??
My plan for micro-exercise between classes is simple but practical. During the 10-minute break, I’ll lead short group activities like stretching, skipping rope or quick yoga poses in the classroom or corridor. These activities take little space and time, fitting perfectly into the break. They can not only refresh our minds for the next class but also gradually improve our physical fitness.??
I sincerely hope to get this chance. I’ll spare no effort to encourage more students to join the micro-exercise and make it a daily routine.??
Sincerely,??
Li Jin
答案】
To her horror, the basket was empty. Jane’s heart sank as she frantically searched the yard, her voice trembling with fear as she called Pip’s name. Tears welled up in her eyes as she imagined the worst, fearing that Pip might have been blown away by the storm or hurt by the falling branches. She knelt down, scanning the ground for any sign of the little sparrow, her hands shaking as she picked up twigs and leaves.
At this moment, Mr. Thompson appeared with Pip. He held the sparrow gently in his hands, his expression a mix of concern and embarrassment. “I found him hiding under my porch,” he said, his voice softer than usual. “The storm was too strong for him.” Jane rushed over, tears of relief streaming down her face as she took Pip back. She looked up at Mr. Thompson, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Thank you.” she whispered, her heart overflowing with joy and newfound respect for her neighbor.
