The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at
home and only communicate in English. This was because they were then living in an English-speaking country.
Now the Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But
they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they
often leave their own customs and mother languages behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits to
knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with more people
around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who
know only one language must ask others to help them communicate.
Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more
effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding
of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from
different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for
each other and better understand each other’s problems.
The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad
that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget their
mother language and become silenced.
根据短文内容,选择正确答案。
26. The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to ______.
A. discuss the need for teaching a new language
B. introduce the passage’s main characters to the readers

28. What does the underlined phrase “multi-language speakers” mean.
A. their mother language B. a new language

Floods are one of the most common natural disasters in the world. They usually happen because of heavy rain
for a long time. Big floods can bring great harm to people.
In big floods, many people lose their lives and homes. Floods also harm animals and destroy the living
environment. After floods, harmful insects may spread deadly diseases among people and animals, which makes
the situation even worse.
But the effects of floods are not always bad. Sometimes, floods can fill up underground waterways. They can
also lead water to dry lands, wells and springs. This is good for the plants and animals in those dry areas. It can also
help farmers grow crops better in the next season.
To keep safe from floods, we should prepare well before they come. We can move our valuable things to high
places. We should also prepare enough food, water and emergency things. When a flood comes, we need to move
to high ground at once and stay away from low-lying areas.
31. Floods usually happen because of ______.
A. strong wind B. heavy rain for a long time
C. sudden shaking of the earth D. high temperature
32. What is the bad effect of floods
A. They fill up underground waterways. B. They lead water to dry lands.
C. They spread deadly diseases. D. They help farmers grow crops.
33. The underlined word “low-lying” means ______ in Chinese.
A. 低洼的 B. 高大的 C. 偏远的 D. 繁华的
34. What should we do to keep safe from floods
A. Keep our valuable things in low places.
B. Stay in low-lying areas when floods come.
C. Prepare enough food and water before floods come.
D. Go out to save our things when floods come.
35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Floods are the most dangerous natural disaster.
B. Floods only bring bad effects to people and the environment.
C. Floods can help the plants in dry areas get water.
D. We don’t need to prepare anything for floods.

Money may not buy happiness, but it helps. Many teenagers want to learn how to manage money before going
out into the world. 36 This idea is raised by Dr. Mara Harvey, a money expert. The following are some of
her tips.
Learn to make money. Ask parents or neighbors if you can do chores to make money. These could include
washing a car or taking the dog for a walk. 37 In this way, you can also improve your communication
skills, which will help when you have a grown-up job, too.
Help your money grow. Money can grow if it’s sitting inside a bank. Put your money in the bank and you can
get interest (利息). 38 One day you may feel surprised at how much money you have.
Make a plan. If you have a big event, you might need to spend more of your money. Try making a plan for
spending and saving. 39 Then it will help you control your money.
40 Figure out how much you can reasonably spend each month. Spend your money on what you truly
need. For example, rather than eating out, you can choose to cook at home.
A. Spend your money wisely.
B. Be smart with your money.
C. Write down how much money you have and you are spending.
