Meet Brody Maggin, a 10-year-old Service Star from Montgomery County, Maryland. Brody’s love for nature inspired him to start a composting (堆肥) program at his school. Composting is when you take food waste, like banana peels, and put them in a special bin (垃圾桶) instead of the trash. Over time, the food breaks down into fertilizer (肥料) that helps plants grow.
The idea began when Brody’s mom’s dance student had to throw out her banana peel while visiting his house. She asked if Brody had a compost bin and suggested Brody start composting at his school. Brody set up a meeting with the headteacher. She liked the idea. Later, Brody helped to run a school meeting to explain the plan. Brody always loved animals and nature, and he doesn’t like seeing litter. Brody thought composting at school was a great way to make a difference.
Brody met with challenges in starting this project. He found out his school once had a composting program, but it didn’t go well because of pests. The bins attracted flies and pests. This time, they’re hoping things will go better with sealed (密封的) bins.
One thing that surprised Brody was learning that food waste makes up about 24% of the material in United States landfills. He also discovered that you have to be careful about what goes into the compost. If you add the wrong thing, like much liquid, it can slow down the entire process.
When other kids ask Brody for advice about starting their own project, he tells them to learn as much as they can, talk to a teacher or the headteacher, and encourage their friends to take part in related activities. Working as a team makes it much easier. Brody believes that composting might seem like a small thing, but if everyone does it together, they can make a big difference for the planet.
4. What inspired Brody to start the composting program?
A. A dance student’s question. B. The headteacher’s suggestion.
C. The failure of the previous program. D. His mother’s encouragement.
5. What can be inferred about the school from paragraph 3?
A. It refused to try again later. B. It tried going green before.
C. It needed more students to help. D. It had no interest in composting.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Brody?
A. Creative and strong-minded. B. Generous and brave.
C. Inspiring and honest. D. Curious and humorous.
7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The importance of teamwork. B. How small actions help the Earth.
C. Brody’s advice for young starters. D. Ways to get more students to take part.

In 2018, Jessica Wade wrote the first of thousands of Wikipedia (维基百科) articles on female scientists. This initial (最初的) entry was inspired by her meeting climate researcher Kim Cobb at a conference. Impressed by her work, Wade decided to learn more about her and look up the scientist on Wikipedia online.
“I thought Cobb was so unbelievable,” Wade told AAAS in a 2019 interview. “I checked for her Wikipedia page, and there was no such thing. I was shocked.” That’s when Wade decided to write the page herself.
Since then, the British physicist has worked hard to make STEM more varied and accessible, with a special focus on women from all backgrounds. One of her big efforts is writing Wikipedia biographies (传记) — she started doing this when she was in her 20s. In less than ten years, she has created over 2,000 articles for Wikipedia. Most of these articles are about women scientists and other scientists who have been forgotten by history.
“Despite women making up 51% of the world’s population, only about 19% of English Wikipedia biographies are about women,” Wade said in a 2024 program by Scientific American. “This isn’t just about scientists — it’s about women in all professional areas.”
Across her research, Wade has rediscovered many pioneers, ranging from Dawn Shaughnessy, whose team discovered five super-heavy elements (要素) on the Periodic Table, to Gladys West, a Black woman born in the 1930s, whose math contribution led to breakthroughs in GPS technology. Wade’s efforts have paid off: she gave a TED Talk about variety in STEM and won important prizes like the Rosalind Franklin Award. She has even been recognized by Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales.
“Being short of variety in science isn’t just unfair — it impacts the science we do and the systems we create,” Wade wrote in an article for The Independent. “We don’t only need to increase the number of girls choosing science, we need to increase the number of women who stay in science.”
8. Why did Jessica Wade decide to write Wikipedia pages at first?
A. She aimed to advance physics. B. She admired Kim Cobb the most.
C. An excellent scientist had no entry there. D. A conference organizer asked her to edit.
9. What does Jessica Wade point out in paragraph 4?
A. Wikipedia biographies are mostly written by men.
B. The shortage of Wikipedia articles on great women.
C. The little impact of Wikipedia biographies on science.
D. Many great women were forgotten in ancient times.
10. Why does the author mention Jimmy Wales in paragraph 5?
A. To explain how Wade got the famous awards.
B. To show Wade’s efforts have been recognized.
C. To present Wikipedia’s attitude to STEM variety.
D. To prove Wade’s articles have covered various persons.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. STEM: A Field Needing More Focus
B. Wikipedia: A Trusted Online Resource
C. Kim Cobb: A Great Climate Researcher
D. Jessica Wade: Writing for Women Scientists on Wikipedia

Green-roofed buildings date back thousands of years, even before the concept (概念) of housing known today was born. The earliest green roofs came in the form of sod (草皮) roofs above caves (洞穴). Plants were used on top of the caves for ceremonial and agricultural purposes. But sod roofs slowly fell out of favor as their usefulness wore down with the terrible weather and wildlife visits.
Modern green roofing technology was exploited around the 1960s. It all started with Germany creating advanced solutions to roof leaking (泄漏). The new technology was heavily marketed, and most people in Germany started using green roofs. Since then, many technologies have come up to advance green roofs. Today, green roofs are growing in popularity across the world.
In terms of design, a green roof is one of the main ways to bring nature into your home. It brings the beauty of the wild right into your home. They offer beautiful views from above and below. Environmentally, a green roof is one of the best ways to bring a microclimate into your home. Even if you live in a hot area, a green roof will bring a cooling effect to the area around you. The other important factor is the role that the roof plays in giving a home to wild animals. Wild insects and birds may find your roof to be a good living place just because you have fixed a green roof.
It seems that the green roof is a win-win for you and the environment. However, this does not mean it is good for you. Its environmental benefits are only workable in situations where you intend to keep it for long. If you intend to replace yours in a few years, stick to a normal roof. Green roofs use so many materials underneath that they could be harmful to the environment.
12. Why did sod roofs become unpopular?
A. Caves lost their attraction.
B. They were too expensive to maintain.
C. Natural elements would do damage to them.
D. Their productivity failed to meet requirements.
13. What does the underlined word “exploited” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Developed. B. Recovered. C. Replaced. D. Changed.
14. What does the author want to express in paragraph 3?
A. The development of green roofs. B. The materials used in green roofs.
C. The ways to maintain green roofs. D. The advantages of green roofs.
15. What can we learn about green roofs from the text?
A. They should be replaced regularly.
B. They are eco-friendly under certain conditions.
C. More recyclable materials should be invented.
D. Wildlife’s home is harmed in an unexpected way.

In late February, the Van Heerden family’s dog Coco disappeared from their home, leaving the family, especially the young brothers sad. The two brothers had grown inseparable from Coco. They spent nights searching their neighborhood, posting “Lost Dog” posters on every street. They even left a bowl of food and a blanket (毯子) by the door each night, refusing to let hope fade entirely. At the same time, they reported their dog’s missing to the police station.
As time passed week by week, the family gradually lost their original optimism (乐观), yet their daily practice of holding onto hope remained unshaken. “We knew Coco might be gone,” Helen Van Heerden recalled, “but those small acts kept us connected to the possibility of her return. “The brothers’ dedication (奉献) — staying up late to check parks and small streets, asking neighbors for clues — proved that love can last a long time.
The good news came on a Saturday morning in mid-March. As the family packed for a weekend trip, Helen’s phone rang. Adicia Thomas, an officer from the police station, spoke in a rush, “We’ve found Coco! A woman named Joy Matodzi rescued her — she’s safe.”
Alicia Thomas told them the whole story. Weeks earlier, Joy Matodzi, an animal lover who ran a small vegetable stand, was walking home when she saw a man mistreating a trembling dog on a dirt road. When she saw its silver collar (颈圈) and its tearful eyes, she immediately knew that she must help that dog. She was sure that no pet should be treated like trash. When the man demanded $15 to free the dog, Joy paid without hesitation, and then she rushed to the police station to report it.
After Alicia Thomas detailed the story, he asked the Van Heerden family to come to the police station to bring the dog home.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The family gave up their trip and drove to the police station in high spirits.

【答案】
The family gave up their trip and drove to the police station in high spirits. As soon as they entered the room, Coco let out an excited bark and dashed toward the brothers, who knelt down to hug her tightly. Tears of joy rolled down their cheeks as they stroked her shaggy fur, checking if she was hurt. Helen held Coco in her arms, murmuring, “We thought we’d lost you forever.” When they met Joy, the family thanked her repeatedly, offering money as a reward, but Joy refused with a smile, saying, “Anyone who loves animals would do the same.”
Inspired by what Joy did, the two brothers decided to help animals in need. They used their pocket money to buy food and water bowls, placing them in parks for stray animals. With their parents’ help, they set up a small “animal rescue corner” in their yard, where they took care of injured cats and dogs they found. They also made posters to call on neighbors to treat animals kindly. Whenever someone asked why they did this, the brothers would say proudly, “Joy saved Coco, and we want to pass on her kindness.”
