Volunteering is becoming more and more popular among middle school students
these days. It is not only a way to help people in need, but also a good chance
for teenagers to improve themselves and enrich their life experience. As an eigh
th-grade student, I have taken part in many volunteer activities in my spare tim
e.
Last Saturday, I joined a volunteer group to help clean up the city park. Wh
en we arrived in the morning, we found some rubbish everywhere. There were plast
ic bags, empty bottles and waste paper on the grass and along the roads. We divi
ded ourselves into small groups. Some picked up the rubbish with tools, some swe
pt the paths, and others reminded visitors to protect the environment. At first,
some visitors looked at us in surprise, but soon many of them began to follow o
ur example and stopped throwing rubbish casually.
After three hours’ hard work, the whole park became clean and tidy. The fre
sh air and green trees made people feel comfortable. Although we felt a little t
ired, we were full of joy and pride. We knew our small effort could make our cit
y more beautiful.
Besides cleaning parks, I also go to the old people’s home once a month. I
chat with the lonely old people, help them wash clothes and tell them interestin
g stories. Most of the old people there live alone and they really need care and
company. Every time we leave, they always thank us with warm smiles.
Volunteering teaches me a lot. It makes me learn to care about others instea
d of only thinking of myself. It also improves my communication skills and makes
me more outgoing. I believe volunteering is a meaningful thing. I will keep on
doing volunteer work and call on more classmates to join us to pass on warmth an
d kindness to our society.

Nowadays, many teenagers spend too much time on smartphones. They use phones
to play online games, watch short videos and chat with friends. However, using
smartphones for a long time brings many problems to teenagers’ study, health an
d daily life.
First, it does great harm to teenagers’ physical health. Staring at the sma
ll screen for hours every day makes eyesight become worse and worse. More and mo
re eighth-grade students have to wear thick glasses at a young age. Besides, sta
ying up late to play phone games influences their sleep. They feel sleepy and ti
red in class the next day, and it is hard for them to focus on what the teacher
says. What’s more, long-time sitting with phones makes teenagers lack exercise,
so they become weak and easy to get sick.
Second, smartphones influence teenagers’ study and mental growth. Many stud
ents can’t control themselves. They can’t put down their phones even when they
need to do homework. Their study grades drop day by day. Some bad information o
nline is also bad for teenagers’ values. They may form bad habits and even foll
ow wrong lifestyles.
In fact, smartphones are not bad in themselves. They can help us search for
useful information, listen to English news and learn more knowledge if we use th
em properly. The key is self-control. Teenagers should make a strict plan for ph
one use. They can set a fixed time to use phones every day and never use them du
ring study time. Parents and teachers should also give proper guidance to help t
eenagers develop good habits.
Smartphones are tools for us, not our masters. We should learn to control th
em wisely and let them serve our study and life.
( )26.What do many teenagers mainly use smartphones to do
A. Study online B. Play games and watch videos
C. Work online D. Make money
( )27.What is the influence of long-time phone use on eyes
A. Eyesight becomes better B. No change at all
C. Eyesight becomes worse D. Eyes become bigger
( )28.Why do some students feel sleepy in class
A. They don’t like the lessons B. They stay up late with phones
C. They get up too early D. The classroom is too quiet
( )29.What does the writer think of smartphones
A. They are completely bad B. They are useless for study
C. They can be used properly D. Teenagers must never use them
( )30.What is the best title for the passage
A. Use Smartphones Wisely B. How to Give Up Phones
C. Teenagers’ Daily Habits D. The History of Smartphones

Traditional Chinese culture has a long history and has attracted people all
over the world. Among all traditional arts, paper-cutting is one of the most fam
ous and popular ones. It has a history of more than 1,500 years and is an import
ant part of Chinese folk culture.
Paper-cutting is easy to learn but hard to master. People only need a piece
of red paper and a pair of scissors. With simple cutting skills, they can create
different beautiful patterns, such as flowers, birds, animals, houses and tradi
tional Chinese characters with good wishes. Red is the most commonly used color

In the past, paper-cutting was mainly popular in ordinary families. During t

l students, begin to learn it in art classes or clubs.
