Evan Shiu, a young boy from New York, has found a meaningful way to spend his summers: volunteering as a
youth soccer coach in his community.

Have you ever visited Baiyangdian in Hebei Province Do you know why people call it the "kidney (肾) of the
North China Plain (平原)" Covering about 366 square kilometers with over 140 lakes, it is the largest freshwater
wetland in northern China. It plays a very important role in improving the environment in the area.
After many years of hard work, Baiyangdian is now in a much healthier state. Now, it is home to about 200
different kinds of birds. In summer, lots of birds fly here. "We see more birds and clearer water than ever before,"

However, this beautiful place once faced serious problems. About forty years ago, it often suffered from water
shortages (短缺), and the water became dirty because of polluting factories and too much fish farming. To save
Baiyangdian, the local government took strong action. They shut down more than 20 polluting factories around it.
They also built wastewater treatment stations in nearby villages to treat the sewage (污水) before it entered the
wetland. What's more, they provided over 5,000 fish farmers with new jobs and stopped fishing in the lakes to
protect the water quality.
As a key part of the Xiongan New Area, Baiyangdian's environmental protection is of great importance. To
achieve this goal, there are plans to plant more trees around it and bring in more clean water from other places.
