Canyon(峡谷) is one of the most typical landforms formed by flowing water. It is a deep, narrow valley with steep rocky walls on both sides. Most great canyons on the earth are created by long-term river erosion over millions of years.
At first, the land was flat with thick rock layers on the surface. Rivers kept flowing across the land all year round. The running water washed and cut the rock little by little. Rainwater also flowed into small cracks in the rocks. In cold seasons, the water in cracks froze and expanded, making the cracks wider and deeper. This natural process is called weathering.
Tectonic movement(地壳运动) also plays an important role. Some land areas were slowly raised by the movement of the earth’s crust. As the land rose, the river’s flowing speed became faster. Fast water had stronger power to cut down the riverbed. Gradually, the river carved a deep groove into the ground, and finally formed a huge canyon.
Meanwhile, rainwater contains weak carbonic acid. It can chemically react with limestone rocks, slowly dissolving and corroding the rock. This chemical weathering speeds up the formation of valleys and canyons. Suppose a river cuts down the riverbed at a steady rate every year, it takes a fixed number of years to form a standard deep canyon.
The world-famous Colorado Canyon and many great canyons in China are all formed in this way. The formation of canyons fully shows the combined effect of running water erosion, chemical weathering and crust movement. It also takes a very long geological time that humans cannot easily feel. Geographers study canyons to know the changes of landforms and the evolution of the earth's surface.

A. The crustal movement has little connection with the formation of canyons.

C. Canyons are usually formed over a long period of time.
D. People can easily sense the formation of the canyon.

The Spring Festival Gala in 2026 left a deep impression on my mind. The program that touched me most was Faye Wong’s performance of The Moment We Shared.
Her soft and clear voice brought the warm lyrics to life, making me feel the beauty of ordinary moments and shared memories. The simple but touching melody filled the whole room with a quiet warmth, and I even felt tears in my eyes.
This performance is not just a song, but a gentle reminder to cherish the people and small moments in our lives. It perfectly showed the warmth of the Spring Festival and the beauty of connection, making it the most unforgettable part of the gala for me.
