When I was eight, I got a book about stars from my dad as a birthday present. That was the beginning of my lifetime interest.
I used to go outside with my mum on clear nights and look at the sky. It looked like black silk with a million diamonds(钻石) on it. In different seasons, we saw different groups of stars. In winter, the Belt of Orion appeared in the night sky, its three stars perfectly lined up and shining brightly. In summer, we saw Vega shine brightly as it got dark. Sometimes we saw stars shooting across the sky. How beautiful they were! Every time I looked up, I was amazed, as if the sky were speaking to me in its own way.
Studying the stars was great fun for me, and I was greatly curious(好奇的) about the night sky. Once I learnt a little, I soon wanted to find out more and more. I asked all kinds of questions, and my parents were always very patient with me. If they didn't know the answers, they would encourage me to find them in the library. So I read a lot about the topic, and my understanding increased as I grew older.
Now, studying the stars is my career. I host a TV programme called The Sky at Night. I use my knowledge to take people on a journey across the Milky Way, and I teach people about the different stars in a lively way. My TV programme has lasted more than 50 years, and I am really proud of that!
Actually, you can also turn your interest into your career. Anybody can achieve their dreams. You just have to enjoy what you do!

As the 2024 fall term began, a primary school in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, had a big surprise for its students. When arriving back at school, students found their usual desks and chairs replaced by multi-functional desk-chair combos(多功能课桌椅组合) that can be turned into makeshift(临时替代的) beds by pulling a few levers. During the summer vacation, such combos were installed in all 16 classes of the school's two grades.
The school's vice-headmaster explained, “Many parents told us that they hoped their kids could lie down for naps(小睡) at noon.” So, the school made a rest schedule. From 12:10 p.m. to 12:55 p.m., all students have the chance to enjoy a relaxing nap. “When students get enough rest, they can focus better during afternoon classes and activities,” the vice-headmaster added.
This didn't happen by accident. The local education authority has noticed students need naps, and the officers there are trying their best to solve the problem. Many schools around the area are adding these desk-chair pairs, so students can lie down for naps at noon.
Actually, as early as 2021, schools were encouraged to help children take good naps. Before this, students had to sleep with their heads on desks. Medical experts warn that the long-term risks of napping face down may not only cause back problems, but also increase eye pressure. But these lying-down desk-chairs can ensure the children's health.
Besides, teachers believe that every school should find the best way to help students nap.“Sleep plays an important role in students' physical and mental health. So schools and families need to work together to look after the well-being of students,” said one teacher.

According to the latest survey, China is facing an aging population. In recent years, China's birth rate(出生率) has been at a low level. In 2024, the birth rate hit a new low—only 9,540,000 babies were born in the whole year.By 2040, China's population will be 1.35 billion, and about 30% of the people will be over 60 years old. The aging problem is getting worse and worse.
To deal with the big problem, ▲ . For example, the Chinese government has developed some policies to make sure the old people have enough money to live on. China is also building care centres right inside a community. And they offer basic medical care, like checking elder people's health.
All around China, many people are also doing their part to help the old people. Li Dongmei, a headteacher of a children's school, has run the school for 15 years. But last year, she opened a new centre for elderly people in Jinan.“Now more old people take my art classes than children did in the past,” she said. What's more, a store in Hebei also started selling more things for older people. “Young people come to buy gifts for their parents here,” a worker explained. Even toy companies are designing special products for older customers, such as puzzles to improve their memory.
Businesses are making changes to help solve the aging problem as well—from new services to special products for the old. These changes not only create jobs for young people but also help society better understand the elderly. Most importantly, people of all ages can live happily together in stronger communities.

①As we all know, people work together. Each person does his or her part to make the world better. A society needs many different kinds of workers in order to work well. Similar to humans, animals also need to work together to live better. In fact, nature gives most animals a social talent that serves a number of purposes.
②Many lions work together in groups. The females(雌性动物) need to search for food. Lions work in teams to catch other animals. They watch the animal in a circle and stop it from running away. Wolves also work in teams. They have a strong social order. They follow a leader and follow rules for the good of the group.
③The members of bee communities have special jobs. A queen bee, worker bees and other bees live in a beehive(蜂巢).The worker bees serve the queen, so the queen can lay eggs. If the queen doesn't lay enough eggs, the busy beehive would soon be empty. In bee communities, worker bees take on the job of protecting the beehive.
④Cows and birds often eat together to help one another. The birds eat the insects on the back of cows. And in return, the birds make a lot of warning noises. They will fly away if they find danger. Crocodiles(鳄鱼) and birds called plovers (千鸟) help each other in the same way. Crocodiles have very sharp teeth. After they eat, the tiny and harmful animals usually remain on their teeth. The plover will pick the animals out of a crocodile's teeth. This provides food for itself and helps clean the crocodile's teeth.

My nine-year-old son Leo was a picky eater who only liked chicken and yogurt. Encouraged by the movie Yes Day, before our Colorado ski trip last December, we agreed: we'd say yes to everything during the trip, including new food and experiences.
We started at the airport restaurant. I tried noodles while Leo had some vegetable salad. We didn't go back for more, but both agreed our choices were “not bad”.
The next day, after arriving at the hotel, I took Leo to meet his snowboarding coach. While he was having his lesson, I skied alone. On the first day, I tried easy green runs(滑道). The next day, remembering how Leo faced his fear of heights to ride the chairlift, I challenged myself to a harder blue run. I went slowly down but felt proud for trying.
Later, I wanted to try the outdoor hot spa pool. It was-6℃, and Leo hated being cold and wet, but I reminded him of our promise. “The hot water felt surprisingly comfortable, and the cold air made me feel alive though getting out was a great pain. It became a fun, fresh experience,” Leo said.
The trip taught us that small “yes” can bring us something unexpected. Since the trip, we've tried saying yes more at home. Leo now tries food like sushi while I've picked up old hobbies like painting. When we don't want to change, we joke, “Remember Colorado ” and then start to take action.

Greening the Desert
Minqin County, located in the city of Wuwei in Gansu Province, is between China's third and fourth largest deserts—the Badain Jaran and the Tengger. Local people plant suosuo trees, a plant that can survive in the desert, to prevent further desertification(沙漠化).
A number of local people have worked hard to turn the place into an oasis(绿洲). 27-year-old Zhong Lin is one of them. Growing up in Minqin, Zhong experienced sandstorms throughout his childhood. He once wanted to run away from his home town and build his future in southern China.
However, he changed his mind when he saw the villagers' hard life and the terrible environment there. He said, “Suddenly I understood—running away isn't the solution. Making a difference is the key.” After graduating from university in 2020, Zhong returned to his home town.“If suosuo trees can take root in sandstorms, why can't young people ” he wrote in his diary.
Since then, Zhong has tried planting suosuo trees in the desert. He planted 500 trees in 2021, but most of them died. So he studied, learnt from experienced villagers, and then planted more. After three years' efforts, the trees he planted are now growing well in the desert, turning the land green and lively.
To draw attention to his home town's environment, Zhong shared videos about tree planting online and started a “Please Plant a Tree in Minqin” activity. Dear Joseph,
Today you are ten years old. Everyone says it, but where has the time gone
Life was quite hard after you were born, but I loved you with all of my heart. What I want to tell you now is how proud I am of the young man you have become.
You have overcome so many challenges and my heart is filled with pride each time—whether that be the continuing development of your speech and language, the way you progressed with your swimming, or your achievements in dance.
I asked a number of people who love you to think of a word they connect with you and I was surprised at their answers. Confident, kind, funny, lovely—to name but a few. I want you to remember these in years to come and if you ever have doubts about who you are.
You see, there is another word, autistic(患孤独症的), that people often use to describe you. If there is a time in the future when your understanding of the world around you has grown, I will explain to you what that actually means.
The way your brain works means that you see the world very differently from other people. You can't often say what you feel when you become upset. The things in disorder always trouble you.
You like having people around you, but friendship doesn't come easily. I know you have many people who enjoy your company, but you haven't quite yet worked out how to share those feelings.
At some point in the future, you will move to another school away from the people you have grown up with, but one that can hopefully prepare you more for your adult life.
At last, I want to say, the most fitting word to describe you, out of all that were provided, was this—“perfect”—you are and always will be.
Love,
Mummy

I was not surprised to hear that someone made fun of my look at my friend's birthday party. I laughed along, silently agreeing that I was not so good-looking. It was so embarrassing.
Over the next months, I became increasingly self-critical(自我批评的), at first only of my looks and then of almost everything else. As I kept focusing on my looks, I became unable to put myself into my schoolwork.
When a family friend got plastic surgery(整形手术), I told my parents that I wanted to do it, too. A nose job seemed like the answer to everything. To my surprise, my parents agreed and even thought of the surgery as a way to treat my snoring(打鼾).
Finally, the day arrived. I went to the hospital with my mother. In her mind, the surgery was small—she saw it as something quick and easy. But to me, it was more like a life-changing event.
Though I felt fine for the first few hours after I returned home, finally a burning pain was in my head. When I finally got the bandage removed, I cried the whole way home. I felt worse. Over the weeks, I began to feel foolish. I couldn't believe that I'd gone through all this just because some classmates had laughed at me.
It wasn't until I actually had the surgery that I realised that having a prettier nose wouldn't make me feel any better about myself. Now I realise that my self-worth is in many more valuable things: my sense of humour and the power of my mind. You might think all you need is a nose job to be beautiful, but what I want to tell you is that you don't need others to think you're beautiful to be worth something.

A.Worried but hopeful. B.Fine and confident.
C.Surprised but doubtful. D.Upset and regretful.
( )11.What is the writer trying to tell us through her story
A.Appearance plays a role in shaping our self-worth.
B.One should know their strengths and weaknesses.
C.Self-worth comes from inside rather than appearance.
D.Others' opinions about one's appearance are important.

Xiaohongshu, a popular Chinese app, is attracting users worldwide with its special “tingquan” activity. Users post photos holding a “tingquan” sign and ask others for advice. Many young people, including foreigners, are joining in this activity.
Z.J.Rubin, an American student, is a Xiaohongshu lover. He posted a photo, in which he looked tired and upset. And later, he got much nice advice from Chinese users, like “Be more confident!” and “Sleep more!” Another user, Zaria from Atlanta, said that she got useful ideas about her hairstyle on Xiaohongshu, while on other apps, people sometimes just left rude comments.
In fact, the difference comes from culture. In China, people believe constructive advice shows true care. They always try to offer help in a polite and honest way, like “This colour doesn't suit you. Try blue instead.” But in the West, people often give either empty likes(点赞) or hurtful comments, without offering real help.
Xiaohongshu creates a friendly space and is full of honest and kind users. Just as the social media expert Candise Lin said, “Young people today want real help, not just likes.” Xiaohongshu's success proves that being honest and caring can bring people closer. It's not about hiding the truth but sharing it in a way that helps others improve. This is why more and more people are using Xiaohongshu for real connections.

Deep under the Pacific Ocean lie coral reefs coloured by some algae(海藻) that live with corals. Corals usually provide nitrogen(氮) to algae, and in return they get carbon(碳), which gives them energy.
In the early 1980s, a huge heat wave turned more than 90 percent of these corals pale and lifeless. And it was believed that about 50 percent of reefs with beautiful corals might disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed up the same Pacific waters in the late 1990s and again in 2015—2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn't influence the reefs as badly as the first. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt.
Swimming to cooler waters is not a good choice for corals, for it makes them easily hurt by the changing climate. But corals are able to adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with heat. Others can use rows of tiny hairs on their bodies to “fan” away too much harmful oxygen(O2) let out by stressed-out algae. Certain baby corals change their own metabolisms(新陈代谢) in order to fight the warming waters. But all the adaptation can protect themselves only to some degree.
After studying and understanding the adaptation, scientists are trying to find ways to help corals fight. If researchers can make corals accept algae that can deal with heat pressure or if they energise genes(基因) that can deal with heat pressure, it will raise the corals' chance of living through future ocean heat waves.
“When I go down to the sea and see a beautiful healthy reef with these colourful corals, I feel this pleasure of being in this underwater world,” a famous biologist says.“It will be really sad to see it dead. But that does drive you to want to use your skills and your love to help fight.”
( )8.What can we know from Paragraph 1
Corals make algae more colourful.
B.Algae provide room for corals to live in.
C.Corals and algae depend on each other.
D.Algae produce nitrogen to influence corals.
( )9.What difficulty do corals face
A.They cannot completely adapt to heat waves.
B.They cannot change their own metabolisms.
C.They have no ability to swim to cooler waters.
D.They have no ability to drive away harmful oxygen.
( )10.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.It's necessary to live with corals.
B.The ocean has become unhealthy.
C.We should try our best to save corals.
D.Making a study of the ocean is a must.
( )11.Which would be the best title for the text

Wild Vegetables in Spring
As spring brings warmer weather, many Chinese families head to parks or fields to pick wild vegetables. Let's meet three common wild vegetables you might find in spring!
  Shepherd's Purse(荠菜)
This plant has small white flowers. It grows early in spring and tastes fresh with a little spice. People in China use it to make dumplings, soups, or salads. It has lots of vitamin A and C, which are good for your eyes.
  Purslane(马齿苋)
Purslane has thick, red stems and round leaves. You can find it in wet, sunny areas. Purslane is known for its sour and strong taste. People often cook it with garlic or add it to noodles. Did you know It has more omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable, making it great for heart health.
  Dandelion(蒲公英)
The yellow flowers turn into soft white parts in late spring. The leaves look like those of the plantain(车前草), but they taste bitter(苦的). If you put them in hot water, they become less bitter. Many people drink dandelion tea because it helps their stomachs work better.

Nowadays, teenagers spend a lot of time on social media. A recent survey shows that they spend about three hours a day on social platforms. Social media can be both good and bad for them.
On the good side, social media helps teenagers keep in touch with friends and family. They can share photos, videos, and messages easily. It also allows them to make new friends from different places. For example, a student in China can talk to a student in the United States. Social media is also a great place for teenagers to share their hobbies and interests. They can join groups where they can talk about things like music, sports, or books.
However, there are some problems with social media. Some teenagers feel stressed because they always want to post pictures showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. They see other people's posts and think their own lives are not good enough. This can make them feel sad or worried. Also, spending too much time on social media can affect their schoolwork and sleep.
Experts say parents and schools should help teenagers use social media in a good way. They suggest limiting the time teenagers spend on social media. For example, parents or schools can set a rule that teenagers can only use social media for one hour each day. Experts also suggest teaching teenagers how to be safe online. This includes not sharing personal information and being careful about who they talk to.

Last weekend I went camping after a long time of tiring work. The trip let me enjoy the clear lake and beautiful views in the woods. I felt the difference at once. I relaxed. I came home feeling rested and a little more cheerful. Going camping became a way to reduce the worry in my life.
I not only got a nice weekend, but I was also experiencing the benefits(益处) of nature to my mental(心理的) health—something that researchers and healthcare providers have long noticed. Research has found that as little as five minutes in nature can be helpful for people to reduce worry and feel happier. This means that we can get relaxed and feel better from stepping outside right away.
If we are unable to put our whole body and mind into nature—for example, by taking a weekend camping trip—we can still find chances in our area. We can take a five-minute break in a small park near our house or take a moment to sit under a large tree. We'll find them useful to refresh our mind. Our better feelings in later life can demonstrate the active influence of nature.
Besides simply spending more time outdoors, consider how we can enjoy nature even if we have no time to get close to nature. Listen to recorded bird songs or rainstorms instead of music, bring green plants or put pictures of natural beauty into our home. Although bringing nature indoors is quite different from a real outdoor experience, we can still feel nature and experience improved feelings.
Being in nature doesn't ask anything of us. Slow down, go outside, and notice what's around us. Listen, touch and smell, and we will really notice a benefit in our mental health.
( )8.Why does the writer mention the research in Paragraph 2
A.To discuss the method of the health research.
B.To explain the influence of being outdoors.
C.To introduce the trip at the weekend.
D.To discuss the risks of outdoor activities.

( )10.What can help people feel better according to the writer
A.Putting plants at home. B.Listening to rock music.
C.Taking pictures of houses. D.Painting walls at home.
( )11.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage
A.To describe personal worry about nature.
B.To share a story about nature with readers.
C.To encourage readers to get close to nature.
D.To explain the importance of protecting nature.

Make Your Own Noodles
What You'll Need
●1/2 cup of flour: All-purpose or bread flour, but bread flour makes chewier(更有嚼劲的) noodles.
●4 tablespoons of water
●1/4 teaspoon of salt
●Mixing bowl, rolling pin, pizza cutter or scissors
Adult helper for cutting and boiling
★Mix Mix flour, water and salt in a bowl. Start with 2 tablespoons of water. Add a little water or flour when necessary. The well-mixed dough(面团) should not stick to your hands too much.
★Knead(揉,捏) Spread a little flour on your table and knead the dough. Hit, fold, and pull it until it's smooth. Smooth dough leads to chewier noodles.
★Rest Cover the dough and let it sit for about 30 minutes. This lets the dough develop.
★Roll Spread some flour on the table. Cut your dough ball into 4 pieces. Take one piece at a time, and roll it out with a rolling pin, as thin as you can.
★Cut When it's pretty thin, cut your noodles narrow, thick, or whatever shape you like! Some people fold the dough before cutting, so it's easier to make straight lines. When ready, unfold the noodles or they'll stick!
★Cook You can cook your noodles right away or dry them for an hour for a bit chewier noodles. Cook fresh noodles in a pot of boiling water for just a few minutes. Fresh noodles cook much faster than dry ones. How long will depend on how thick your noodles are—thicker noodles take longer.
  Eat up!

What makes an art form last for over 600 years Kunqu Opera, one of China's oldest and most beautiful traditional operas, has done just that. However, like many traditional Chinese art forms, Kunqu Opera once faced challenges. Modern culture, like pop music and movies, took the centre stage, and fewer young people were interested in Kunqu Opera.
But things are changing now. With schools teaching traditional art and performers using social media, a new generation has started discovering the beauty of Kunqu Opera through online videos and live shows.
Fang Qian is one of these young fans. “Kunqu Opera is like a seed that grows as I learn more about it,” she says. “The more I study it, the more I discover about other parts of Chinese culture, like literature(文学), calligraphy, music, and painting. This helps me understand my cultural roots gradually.”
Fu Jin, a professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts(中国戏曲学院), explains why Kunqu Opera is so special. “Among all Chinese operas, Kunqu Opera is one of the most beautiful and well-known,” he says. “It shows many parts of traditional Chinese culture, such as ways of thinking, social values, and lifestyles.” What cheers Professor Fu is that more young people are now falling in love with Kunqu Opera. It's normal to see ten beautiful women taking part in a beauty pageant(选美比赛). Some smile naturally and some play to the camera. Their beauty forever freezes(定格) at this moment. Like many other pageants around the world, these women are young, thin and match many standards of traditional “beauty”.
But none of these women are real—everything about them, even the expressions on their faces, is created by AI. This is the world's first ever AI beauty pageant. Each woman has a famous AI company behind them, such as OpenAI and Stable Diffusion.
Each of the competitors has an unusual face and personality, which makes them different from others. One red-haired, green-eyed avatar(用户头像) named Seren Ay posts photos on the Internet as she travels around the world, appearing on Miami beaches and streets of Tokyo, and she has received many “likes” from millions of fans. But unlike real humans, these avatars never look old. They don't need to be paid and can be directly owned by a company for the purpose of making money.
The pageant organisers say the competitors will be judged by more than just beauty. They will also get points for their creators' use of AI tools, and also their social media influence. They even have to answer questions like “If you could have one dream to make the world a better place, what would it be ”
Fawcett, one of the organisers, says they are looking for someone powerful and positive(积极乐观的). They are not just judging beauty, but also the technology behind each avatar... And most importantly, the backstory behind them. “This shows the directions of future AI technology,” Fawcett adds.

We know that AI is not a real human. However, it seems many of us can't help treating it like one. In a survey of 2,000 people in the USA, 48 percent believed we should have good manners when talking to AI, said The New York Post.
Scientists at the Imperial College London in the UK have made a similar discovery recently. They found that humans tend(往往会) to treat AI as human beings showing sympathy(同情) towards them and even protecting them, Science Daily reported.
In their experiment, the scientists invited 244 volunteers to play an online ball game with an AI bot. A make-believe volunteer also took part, and sometimes left out the AI on purpose by passing the ball only to human players. As the scientists watched the game, they discovered that most of the time the volunteers tried to fix the unfairness(不公平) towards the bot by giving it the ball more often.
The finding is in line with the ideas of Media Equation Theory, the scientists said in their papers. Developed in the 1990s by scientists at Stanford University in the USA, the theory suggests we often reply to media and technology like we do to real people and places, rather than just seeing them as tools.
An example is Replika, an AI chatbot created in 2017. It has about 2 million users worldwide. “Your Replika will always be your side no matter what you are up to,” reads its official website. But the AI's support turned dangerous when it encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, to carry out his plan to kill the Queen. Chail tried to do so in December 2021, but he was stopped in time. However, he was still put in prison.
Companies should avoid making AI too human-like in their design, advised the scientists at Imperial College London. This can help people tell the difference between virtual(虚拟的) and real communication.
