It is a universal truth that no one can go through life without ever experiencing failure. The problem many of us face, however, is that we automatically equate experiencing failure with being a failure. We view it as something to be ashamed of, or embarrassed about, something to be avoided or hidden.
In fact, failure gives us an opportunity to learn, adapt and grow. It should be expected on the way to achieving life goals and used as a feedback mechanism to get it right next time, or the time after.
I recently saw a woman who had to give up studying for her university degree. She had bipolar disorder and was unable to cope with the pressure of studying. She was studying to be a teacher and had hoped to find a teaching job. However, she failed her exams and job interviews, and overall felt like she was failing to achieve anything.
One of the things she enjoyed doing was singing in a band. So in order to earn a bit of money, she began giving singing lessons to children in her community. Fast forward 18 months and she now has her own growing business of teaching singing full-time. She hasn’t achieved this goal in the way she imagined, and she wouldn’t have embarked on this path without the setbacks she encountered.
What was it about this woman that made her succeed Yes, failure had a big part to play, but the ability to bounce back and be flexible was an important factor.
An important part of developing flexibility is having a supportive network. Having relationships with people who can support us helps us go through tough times.
Our attitudes toward ourselves are also crucially important — including a sense that we are in control of our actions, have confidence in what we do, realize our strengths and set ourselves achievable and realistic goals. The secret to flexibility lies in accepting that there are things in life we cannot change. Rather than thinking of ourselves as victims, we need to realize we have the ability to change the way we think and behave. Ultimately, we will realize life may throw manure at us, but we can grow roses with it.
4. What do people usually think of failure
A. Shameful. B. Unavoidable. C. Changeable. D. Rewarding.
5. Why did the woman stop studying for her university degree
A. Lack of academic interest B. Illness and study stress
C. Eagerness for faster earnings D. Repeated exam failures
6. What saying can describe the woman’s story
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Make hay (干草) while the sun shines.
C. A rolling stone gathers no moss (苔藓). D. Don’t put all eggs in one basket.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. Bipolar disorder prevents success.
B. Singing is a better career for the woman.
C. Failure should be avoided in tough conditions.
D. Embracing the unchangeable with adaptability is significant.
C
When my son was little, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face betrayed worry or concern, he would cry. If I stayed calm, he would brush himself off and get back to running. Here was this human being who was counting on me to make sense of the world — not just how to tie his shoes or recite the ABCs, but how to feel.
Years later, in middle school, this lesson returned. One night, my son told me about a classmate who had been unkind to him. My first reaction was to rush to fix it — email the parents, call the school, demand action. But instead of reacting, I paused. “That sounds hard. What did you do ”
“I decided not to hang out with him for a while,” my son replied. “I am going to try playing soccer at lunch instead.” “That’s a great solution,” I said, and he went back to his homework.
These ordinary parenting moments taught me an important truth: sometimes, the best thing a parent can do is doing nothing at all. Over 30 years in schools, too often I’ve watched parents overreacting, robbing their kids of the confidence that comes from struggling, and exhausting themselves in the process. Most Americans now believe that young people will not be better off than their parents. They see greater competition for fewer resources — be it college admissions, jobs, or housing. However, a young person who gets used to having a parent intervene on his behalf begins to believe that he’s not capable of acting on his own, feeling both anxiety and dependence.
I want to make a case for the Lighthouse Parent, a term that the educator has used. A lighthouse parent stands as a steady, reliable guide, providing safety and understanding without controlling every aspect of their child’s journey, like a lighthouse that helps sailors avoid crashing into rocks. The key is learning when to step back and enable them to find their own way.
8. What does the author want to tell with the example of his child falling
A. Children should be prevented from taking risks.
B. Parents can feel exactly what their children feel.
C. Parents’ reaction influences children’s mental state.
D. Children would cry regardless of parental guidance.
9. What does the underlined word “intervene” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Step in. B. Move on.
C. Speak up. D. Take off.
10. What kind of parent is the author
A. Distant. B. Traditional.
C. Supportive. D. Overprotective.
11. What would Lighthouse Parents do when children are anxious about a school presentation
A. Complete the task for the child.
B. Contact and criticize the teacher.
C. Ask the child to report every step.
D. Guide the child while letting them act.
D
Just as is often the case, many people are led to believe that there are certain activities they simply cannot accomplish. But a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way.
Dr. Zacharias Vamvakousis has come up with a creative way to improve the quality of life for countless people through the power of music. His invention is called EyeHarp, which enables individuals to make music using their gaze (注视) instead of their hands.
“EyeHarp is the first musical application that allows people with disabilities to play music with eyes or head movements,” Zacharias explains. “Using an eye tracker, you can make melodies by looking at the notes on the screen.”
EyeHarp uses the same type of digital eye-tracking technology used in some computer games. But instead of using it to aim weapons at digital opponents, EyeHarp uses it to track your eyes as they stay on different musical notes on a colorful circle on your computer screen.
The application allows you to play three to four notes every second. However, users have to be careful not to move their eyes too quickly from one musical note to the next. So, much like any other instrument, playing a tune takes practice and concentration.
Zacharias was inspired to create the magical application after a musician friend was badly hurt in a motorcycle accident. His friend was worried he’d never be able to play his guitar again, so Zacharias decided to find a new way to make music available to him. While his friend didn’t end up needing EyeHarp, Zacharias was on a mission to help others who thought music was forever lost to them. These are people who are so disabled that they don’t have the opportunity to do many things and learning music through EyeHarp gives them happiness, the purpose and the opportunity to play music.
Zacharias agreed, saying that music builds social connections and raises self-esteem. He’s currently training music teachers to use EyeHarp so they can reach even more people with disabilities. This invention has the potential for changing so many lives. Hundreds of people with disabilities have used EyeHarp.
“There wasn’t any instrument they could play. But now, they’re able to make their own music,” says Zacharias. “I hope it will light up the lives of more people like them.”
12. How does EyeHarp work according to the passage
A. By tracking the movement of players’ hands.
B. By detecting the sound of a music note.
C. By following the stay of the gaze on the screen.
D. By recognizing the face of a disabled user.
13. What inspired Zacharias to create the application
A. His love for music and technology.
B. A need for a new form of musical therapy.
C. A desire to help his musician friend.
D. A sympathy towards people with disabilities.
14. What can we infer about EyeHarp from the passage
A. It is very difficult to play.
B. It can be used by anyone easily.
C. It has limited musical notes.
D. It brings hope to many disabled people.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. From Guitar to Gaze: A Musician’s Recovery Story.
B. EyeHarp: Making Music with a Glance.
C. How Eye Trackers Work in Computer Games.
D. Training Music Teachers for the Disabled.

That December morning, I decided to take Apple to pay a visit to my aunt. I’d had Apple only a couple of weeks, but we’d become nearly inseparable. I opened the car door. Apple jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I started the car and set off. It’s always tricky turning around. I live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by woods. I have to drive up the mountain to get to my driveway, which is hardly wide enough for one car and ends at a steep valley. I twisted around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to cover my eyes. I felt a shake as the left rear part of the car dropped. Oh, no! The car slipped and rolled. We landed upside down. I felt a sharp pain in my chest and my legs. I couldn’t move. I looked over to find Apple. She was still in the passenger seat and fortunately, she was okay.
I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911. But just as I’d feared, there was no signal at the bottom of this valley. Now what Robert, my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me and had his own driveway. It was unlikely that he or anyone else would drive up to my house. Apple barked nervously. At least I could get her out of here. There was a hole in the driver’s side rear window. “Come on, Apple,” I said. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up, and gently put her head through the hole. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley. As the sun set, it turned cold. I trembled with cold and pain. My pulse was weakening. I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I was awakened by loud barks.

Last term in our school, a series of hands-on courses were launched, ranging from planting vegetables to making traditional handicrafts.
As for me, sewing is my favorite course, where I obtained some essential life skills such as sewing a button and making a cushion. It was surely a rewarding and fulfilling experience, which not only enriched my extracurricular life but also helped me acquire practical basic working skills and form the good habit of laboring.
The hands-on courses have won wide popularity among students. If possible, an exhibition could be held to demonstrate students’ well-designed works, showing their creativity.
【答案】One possible version:
“Help!” I shouted with all my strength. My voice cracked midway, worn out by pain and cold. The barks grew louder, mingling with a familiar voice calling my name — it was Robert! I strained to tap the car body with my fist, making dull thuds. Soon, his face appeared. He gasped at the upside-down car and rushed down with a rope. He tied the rope around a nearby tree first, then carefully climbed down to check my condition, whispering reassuring words while trying not to move me roughly. Luckily, I was saved and rushed to the nearest hospital.
Later, Robert told me that when he got home from work, Apple was waiting for him. The dog kept tugging at his trousers and barking towards the mountain. Sensing something urgent, he followed Apple. The dog ran fast, never slowing down until they reached the valley. As I lay in the hospital, Apple curled up beside my bed, her head resting on my hand. I finally understood: Apple wasn’t just a dog to me. In the quiet, lonely mountains, she was my family, my connection to the world. The bond between us wasn’t just companionship — it was trust, loyalty, and a promise to look out for each other, no matter what happened.
