As readers, we are always looking for ways to improve: we want to read more, read faster and achieve a better understanding. Improvement sometimes happens by breaking bad reading habits. However, many people don’t realize the problems they have in the reading process. (1)
Reading at the wrong speed.
Many readers pay little or no attention to their reading speed and that is a mistake. Whether you are reading too fast or too slow, the reading experience will be badly influenced. (2) Reading at a speed that is too high can influence your understanding of what you read.
Not paying attention to your reading environment.

That will cause you to read the same passages over and over again. Wherever you read, make sure the location isn’t too noisy, that the lighting is good, and that you won’t be interrupted (打扰).
(4)
Probably the most common bad reading habit is doing it without paying attention. Focusing on other things while reading is going to badly influence our performance in many ways. (5) Besides, we will remember less from what we read, and our understanding level will be much lower.

There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but the person who lives inside.
I met Miss Clark about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. My parents told me I could start school when I was 4. However, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September. Anyway, I was finally in Miss Clark’s class—Room 3. She always created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be at that moment.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss Clark to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I was surprised at how she connected with children. For years, Miss Clark volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asked me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement (地下室). We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids.
On the papers of the letters, I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly my mind goes back to Room 3. Over 40 years ago, Miss Clark sat on a chair while my classmates and I sat at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss Clark sits on her rocking chair, and I sit at her feet. We talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her.
Our friendship is one that neither of us expected.
Educators know teaching is a job for the development of each young student. The lucky ones get to see what their students have done with their lives. The excellent ones never leave their students’ hearts.
62.As the time to sell Miss Clark’s house is near, ________.
A. we give out the paintings from her basement
B. my parents write her a thank-you note
C. I found my own name printed on a letter
D. I come to help her organize her things
63.The right time order of the following events according to the passage is ________.
① I learnt about the letters from Miss Clark.
② We shared our experiences with each other.
③ I looked forward to being Miss Clark’s student.
④ Miss Clark came and volunteered in my classroom.
A. ①③②④ B. ③①④② C. ①④③② D. ③②④①
64.According to the passage, Miss Clark ________.
A. is warm-hearted but she doesn’t have any close friends
B. is creative to build a safe place for children in her small brick house
C. is special because she has made a great difference to me
D. is patient enough to teach every child how to paint
65.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. Amazing Memories B. Unexpected Friendship
C. Unforgettable Childhood D. Wonderful Development

66.Water Bottles: Handy or Harmful
In recent years, more and more people have come to realize the bad influence plastic water bottles have on the environment. However, their use is still on the increase.
Americans buy nearly 100 billion bottles of water every year. Stack (堆叠) those up, and you could build a tower that reaches all the way from the Earth to the Moon—60 times! Why do we love bottled water so much It’s easy—you just take it and go, and throw away the bottle when you’re done. And it is healthy, compared with sugary sodas and sports drinks. But there’s more to the story.
The truth is, bottled water often isn’t any better than the water many people can get from a tap. In fact, more than half of all bottled water is tap water. This includes popular brands like Aquafina and Dasani, which sell tap water that has been run through a filter (过滤器).
And chances are that the water from your tap has been tested more carefully than bottled water. Most cities check tap water for dangerous germs (细菌) and chemicals. The rules for bottled water are less strict.
Perhaps the biggest problem with water bottles lies in the containers themselves. They create huge amounts of litter. Remember those 100 billion bottles we use every year Less than one-third of them get recycled. The rest go into landfills (垃圾填埋场), where they can take hundreds of years to break down. Or they are left behind as litter on our streets and in our parks. Some end up in oceans, where sea animals can eat parts of them and get sick or die.
But not everyone can just avoid bottled water. Around the world, more than 2 billion people only have access to water that contains harmful germs or chemicals. If they were to drink this water, they could get very sick. They could even die. They don’t drink bottled water because it’s easy. They drink it because they need it.
Some bottled water has fluoride (氟化物), which protects your teeth. If your tap water doesn’t have fluoride, bottled water could be a healthy choice for you. Also, if there was no bottled water, you might drink a soda or a sports drink. Sugary drinks like these are a big part of why so many Americans are overweight.
(1) How many bottles of water do Americans buy every year _____________________________________
(2) According to the article, what kind of water do Aquafina and Dasani offer _____________________________________
(3) Why is tap water sometimes even better than bottled water _____________________________________
(4) What happens to the used water bottles that don’t get recycled _____________________________________
(5) Is it better for everyone to just stop drinking bottled water Why or why not _____________________________________

75.【答案】As people’s living conditions improves, more and more people enjoy travelling. I also love reading, because it has become an important part of my life.
I often read travel books in my free time. My favorite book is Journey to the West. From it, I learn to be brave and never give up when facing difficulties. Besides reading, I love travelling. This spring, I went to Nanjing by high-speed train and visited Zhongshan Mountain National Park. I prefer on-site travel to online travel because I can feel the real beauty of a place with my own eyes.
Both reading and travelling open my eyes to the new world. They make my life colorful and meaningful, and I will keep exploring both of them.
