Hi Julie, Thanks for your email. I’m sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well these days. I have some advice for you. I believe it will help you feel better. In winter, it gets dark earlier and it can be quite cold outside. As a result, it’s difficult for most of us to get out and exercise. We may just want to stay at home and make ourselves a hot drink. But in fact, cold days are great for some outdoor activities.
Taking exercise outdoors in winter helps people avoid the cold virus (病毒). As we all know, people catch a cold easily in winter. The cold virus lives longer in cold and dry weather. As people spend more time inside, it’s much easier to get sick during the cold winter. When we take exercise outside, we can get more sunlight, making our body stronger and healthier. A study shows that winter exercise can cut the risk of catching a cold by 20 to 30 percent.
Exercising in winter helps people to lose weight (减肥) more quickly. Scientists at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) say the body makes more energy to keep warm in low temperatures. This means that the body uses more fat during winter. If you would like to lose weight, go outside and do some exercise in winter.
Also, outdoor exercise can make people happy. Some people may get the “winter blues” as winter comes. They often feel sad and lose interest in almost everything. At this time, going outside to exercise can be helpful.
With so many benefits of outdoor activities in winter, what are we waiting for Let’s exercise outside!

36.Dear Maha,
Today I want to share all the fun things I love doing in my free time with you! There are so many activities that keep me busy, but sewing (缝纫) is at the top of my list. Recently, I have been making a pink dress for my 7-year-old little sister, Lisa.
My best friend Sally just introduced me to a new pastime (消遣): chess! It’s an indoor board game you play with one partner. I lost three games at first, but I finally won the fourth game. Now I’m very interested in it. Sally and I are going to join the school chess club next month. We practice for 20 minutes every night after school.
I also love painting and taking photos. Last week, I painted the big tree in the school, and my art teacher liked it so much. She hung it in the school hall. As for photos, I entered a school competition last month with a picture of a cat playing with a butterfly. I didn’t think I’d win anything, but I got first prize-a camera! My art teacher even said I should think about becoming an artist.
What do you like to do in your free time Tell me about your hobbies.
Best wishes,
Beth

How to spend my free time
My free time is always filled with meaningful and enjoyable activities.
On weekday evenings, I keep practicing calligraphy for half an hour, which helps me quiet my mind and improve my focus. On Saturdays, once my homework is done, I love to go for a bike ride around the neighborhood. It’s a perfect way to clear my head. Additionally, I play badminton with my neighbors every Sunday afternoon. It’s good exercise as well as a great chance to spend time with friends.
These activities not only keep me healthy but also let me make new friends and learn teamwork.
