Every year, wildfires destroy (毁坏) tens of thousands of square kilometers of forest land. People lose their homes. Some are hurt or even killed. Smoke jumpers help to stop this.
Smoke jumpers are special firemen. Some fires are in hard-to-reach places, such as in the middle of a mountain forest. These firemen jump from planes or are lowered into those areas by helicopters (直升机).
When they arrive, smoke jumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main job is to stop the fire from spreading until other firemen arrive. Then smoke jumpers use shovels (铲子) or axes (斧子) to clear the land of burnable things, like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them too, but not a lot.
Although most smoke jumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors (因素) are how tall and how heavy they are. Smoke jumpers in the U.S., for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilos. This way, they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land.
