Craig Clark is a man who loves trying new things. He once ran a chain of convenience stores. After retiring, he became a computer technician (技术人员). Later, this warm-hearted Florida senior turned himself into the “Tech Fairy” in Sarasota. As WMRA Public Radio reports, he fixes old laptops and gives them away to people in need for free.
About 8 years ago, Clark started helping people repair laptops. At first, when doing computer repair work, he found many customers asked him to take away their old laptops after getting new ones. What began as a small recycling activity soon became his interest — helping people who struggled to stay connected get digital access.
This project took off thanks to the Nextdoor app. He posted photos of smiling people with the almost-new laptops. Neighbors then realized their unused laptops could help change others’ lives. Soon, even strangers started donating old laptops, and Clark really appreciates their kindness.
Clark can’t remember why he called himself the “Tech Fairy”, but he explains how his motivation (动机) developed. “People would give me their old computers when they bought new ones. I would fix them up and find someone to give them to,” he said. He admits he never had a plan. “It just happened and grew beyond my expectation, but I’m so glad it did.”
Clark fixes laptops by taking the place of broken parts and adding new hard drives. He gives away 8-9 repaired laptops monthly, worth over $20,000 in total. He finds those in need in a special way: when shopping at second-hand stores, he talks to customers who look at used laptops but don’t buy them. He tells them about his laptops, and shows photos of people he’s helped — this makes people trust him.
Most people who get the laptops are low-income workers. One restaurant worker told Clark he got two $6,000 college grants (助学金) — something he never would have known without the laptop. “I love fixing computers and watching people smile,” Clark says. He plans to keep being the “Tech Fairy” for people in need.

As students reach high school and classes get more challenging, many teens tend to quit the instruments they once played. While young children are often encouraged to play music, this stress does not last throughout their high school years. Both in and out of high schools, instrumental fluency for teens is continuously unvalued despite countless positive impacts.
According to a study, the process of playing a musical instrument has been found to develop fine motor (运动的) skills, as well as improve memory and focus. In addition, musicians’ improved sensitivity (敏感) to sound and beat enables improved capabilities when learning a second language or achieving fluency in communication with others. The abilities that musicians pick up over years have great impacts. Improved concentration, better memory work, and strong language skills lead to high test scores, a better understanding of new material, and an overall stronger academic (学业的) performance.
What’s more, playing an instrument has a positive effect on an individual’s mental health. Music and emotions are deeply connected; simply listening to a piece can affect your state of mind, uplifting your spirits and calming you. Playing music goes a step further, acting as a way that allows the musicians to express their emotions. This emotional release (释放) can allow an individual, especially a teen, to process emotions and reduce stress.
Desmond Cassidy, a guitarist, when asked about how playing instruments benefited his mental health, said, “I think that when I’m playing music, it clears my mind because I can really only focus on what I’m doing in that moment. It helps me feel calm and stops things from troubling me.”
Playing an instrument also helps teens get over performance anxiety and build confidence. No matter what kind of performance, playing music for audiences means stepping out of your comfort zone and dealing with mental challenges. Over time, this act becomes easier and more natural as children learn how to manage their personal anxiety. According to Eric Lifland, a performing arts teacher, “For students who suffer from performance anxiety, joining a group and performing with others is the best way to develop confidence and joy as a performer.”
As is seen, instead of thinking of music as a simple hobby, high schools and parents should put a stress on promoting instrumental programs for their teens.
28. What effect will playing an instrument have on teens according to paragraph 2
A. It makes them perform better in exams.
B. It hardly reduces their academic pressure.
C. It ensures them to be top language learners.
D. It improves their creativity in solving problems.

A. To show his love for playing music. B. To explain why musicians focus better.

A. Joining competitions builds confidence. B. Practice improves skills.

People with Alzheimer’s disease and their families often require support. According to a report, one in nine people aged 65 and older has the disease. With that in mind, CrossSense, a British technology company, has developed AI-driven smart glasses designed for these people. Using a camera built into the frame (框), the glasses can identify and label (贴标签) objects directly. They also feature an AI assistant, which can gently ask questions, provide reminders, and adapt to a user’s needs.
The AI helps those with Alzheimer’s disease remember the order of steps and label the things they are looking at. This can give patients a sense of confidence while also making things easier for those who care for them.
According to CrossSense, the glasses will check in with the user about items (事项) on their schedule, such as daily plans and medicines. They can also help users remember the names and appearances of people they often meet. The glasses can keep track of conversations users have had, along with objects they’ve met throughout the day. The built-in battery allows the glasses to operate for an hour, but a portable (便携式的) power bank can keep it working throughout the day.
The technology is still being carefully tested to ensure safety and quality, but it has already made an impression. CrossSense hopes to make the glasses available to the public by 2027.
For the few patients with Alzheimer’s disease who have tested these smart glasses, the support the glasses provide has been game-changing. Carole Greig, an Alzheimer’s patient and smart glasses tester, said, “How amazing that we can be given some more independence, that we’re going to be able to manage on our own.”
Dr. Rab Nawaz, a scientist in the UK, said, “These glasses could help by labeling things, giving step-by-step tips, and reducing worry when a user can’t do what they want. However, my biggest concern is overpromising. These glasses are exciting, but they are not a treatment for Alzheimer’s and they will not work equally well for every patient.”
With continued testing over time, there will hopefully be further advances in both technology and medicine to support patients with Alzheimer’s disease now and in the future.

In late February, the Van Heerden family’s dog Coco disappeared from their home, leaving the family, especially the young brothers sad. The two brothers had grown inseparable from Coco. They spent nights searching their neighborhood, posting “Lost Dog” posters on every street. They even left a bowl of food and a blanket (毯子) by the door each night, refusing to let hope fade entirely. At the same time, they reported their dog’s missing to the police station.
As time passed week by week, the family gradually lost their original optimism (乐观), yet their daily practice of holding onto hope remained unshaken. “We knew Coco might be gone,” Helen Van Heerden recalled, “but those small acts kept us connected to the possibility of her return. “The brothers’ dedication (奉献) — staying up late to check parks and small streets, asking neighbors for clues — proved that love can last a long time.
The good news came on a Saturday morning in mid-March. As the family packed for a weekend trip, Helen’s phone rang. Adicia Thomas, an officer from the police station, spoke in a rush, “We’ve found Coco! A woman named Joy Matodzi rescued her — she’s safe.”
Alicia Thomas told them the whole story. Weeks earlier, Joy Matodzi, an animal lover who ran a small vegetable stand, was walking home when she saw a man mistreating a trembling dog on a dirt road. When she saw its silver collar (颈圈) and its tearful eyes, she immediately knew that she must help that dog. She was sure that no pet should be treated like trash. When the man demanded $15 to free the dog, Joy paid without hesitation, and then she rushed to the police station to report it.

After Alicia Thomas detailed the story, he asked the Van Heerden family to come to the police station to bring the dog home.

【答案】
The family gave up their trip and drove to the police station in high spirits. As soon as they entered the room, Coco let out an excited bark and dashed toward the brothers, who knelt down to hug her tightly. Tears of joy rolled down their cheeks as they stroked her shaggy fur, checking if she was hurt. Helen held Coco in her arms, murmuring, “We thought we’d lost you forever.” When they met Joy, the family thanked her repeatedly, offering money as a reward, but Joy refused with a smile, saying, “Anyone who loves animals would do the same.”
Inspired by what Joy did, the two brothers decided to help animals in need. They used their pocket money to buy food and water bowls, placing them in parks for stray animals. With their parents’ help, they set up a small “animal rescue corner” in their yard, where they took care of injured cats and dogs they found. They also made posters to call on neighbors to treat animals kindly. Whenever someone asked why they did this, the brothers would say proudly, “Joy saved Coco, and we want to pass on her kindness.”
