Once again, I was at a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That was where the similarities ended. I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was awkward and shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to say no. Actually, no one had invited me to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest fashions, wanted to invite me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she had outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in cupboard laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That’s when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations.
We had a great time that afternoon. She showed me her outfits, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it sometimes used her as a model for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.
Paris charmed (吸引) the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free pieces. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses and spent every free moment together. I let my hair grow out and learned to love being tall.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through my tough teenage years and taught me an amazing thing about making friends: “Your worst enemy” can turn out to be your best friend.
4. What was the author’s first impression of Paris
A. She held a poor opinion of Paris.
B. She was proud of her personality.
C. She thought she was similar to Paris.
D. She hoped to become friends with Paris.
5. What was the author’s first surprise from Paris
A. Paris invited her to play at home.
B. Paris lived in a small flat.
C. Paris still played with Barbies.
D. Paris shared her writing dream.
6. What influence did Paris have on the author
A. She stayed shy and awkward. B. She hated her tall height.
C. She gave up writing. D. She grew more confident.
7. Which is the best title of the text
A. My Teenage School Life
B. An Unexpected Best Friend
C. A New School and a New Friend
D. Paris, the Popular Girl in Neighborhood
【答案】4. A 5. A 6. D 7. B

If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first gain the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentences, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc.
There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you chance upon, but the fact you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: Besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, and then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs (输入) in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
8. Which should you improve first according to the author
A. Reading and writing. B. Writing and speaking.
C. Reading and listening. D. Speaking and listening.
9. What should you do to improve your reading when you read
A. Spend more time studying grammar. B. Think about what you are reading actively.
C. Look up all the new words in the dictionary. D. Copy as many words and sentences as possible.
10. What does the underlined phrase “chance upon” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Wind up. B. Search for.
C. Lose on purpose. D. Meet by accident.
11. Which of the following may the author agree with
A. You should take notes of whatever you are hearing.
B. Being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening.
C. Everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.
D. You needn’t practice listening if you keep on reading every day.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. B

Wildlife tourism can be a powerful supporter in protecting nature, but it can also harm it. The question of whether wildlife travel is, on balance, good for wildlife is a difficult one, and there’s no simple answer. The World Travel & Tourism Council reported in 2019 that wildlife tourism contributes $120.1 billion to the global GDP, yet tourism makes up about 8% of global greenhouse gases, a major driver of climate change and biodiversity (生物多样性) loss.
Visiting popular wildlife destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef or Galapagos Islands often includes air travel, which disturbs (打扰) animals and can lead to habitat loss. Studies have shown that tourists can disturb nesting seabirds and feeding sea lions, and that dolphins and whales may change their behavior to avoid areas frequented by boats. Over-development of resources, introduction of non-native species, and pollution are other issues caused by tourism.
Despite these disadvantages, many believe that properly organized tourism can play an important role in conservation (保护). The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) stated that international tourism can aid in fighting against poverty, cultural understanding, and biodiversity conservation. Data show that over 47,000 species are threatened with extinction, stressing the need for biodiversity conservation efforts.
Tourism can be an important contributor to protected-area management costs, especially in areas lacking funding sources. For example, in Galapagos Islands, marine-based tourism brings nearly $178million every year. However, depending on tourism for conservation funding raises concerns. While accommodation providers and tour operators are increasingly applying environmentally friendly practices, it’s important to reflect on the impacts of our travel choices. We must consider the frequency of flights taken and the conservation, and community benefits of each trip. The first step to travel responsibly is being aware of these impacts and trying to maximize benefits while minimizing harm to wildlife and habitats.
In conclusion, wildlife tourism can promote economic development and provide funding for nature protection but it requires careful planning to ensure the results. It’s an issue that demands thoughtful consideration of our travel habits and their broader influence on the environment.
12. What is one concern regarding wildlife tourism according to the text
A. Economic loss. B. Cultural difference.
C. Habitat disturbance. D. Crowded destinations.
13. What does the WWF statement show about travelling abroad
A. It’s a threat to biodiversity. B. It’s a source of climate change.
C. It’s a possible conservation tool. D. It’s the main conservation funder.
14. What does the author think of the dependence on tourism
A. It’s a risky method. B. It’s an excellent idea.
C. It’s overrated. D. It’s certainly fail-safe.
15. What might the author agree with
A. Managed tourism helps conservation. B. Wildlife won’t be harmed by tourism.
C. Biodiversity conservation lacks funding. D. Environmentally friendly tourism is impossible.

Good morning! As Chinese teenagers, it is our duty to inherit our excellent traditional culture. To deepen our understanding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and raise our protection awareness, our school will launch the “ICH Enters the Campus” event.
During the activity, we can learn traditional paper-cutting, listen to vivid ICH stories from inheritors, and enjoy wonderful folk performances. Not only does the event enrich our campus life, but it also helps us build cultural confidence and connect with our ancestors’ wisdom.
Cultural heritage is our nation’s precious treasure. Let’s take an active part in this meaningful event!
Thank you!
