Bryce Cunningham never set out to be a farmer.During childhood visits to his
grandparents'farm in East Ayrshire,he always enjoyed the milk straight from the cow.But he
had "no interest whatsoever"in taking on the farm one day.So instead of following in his
grandfather's footsteps,he became a technician for Mercedes-Benz,spending 10 years with
the company until a family emergency changed the course of his life.
His father and grandfather were diagnosed (with severe illnesses in 2014,so
Cunningham took over the business.The same month his father died,the milk price collapsed
from 27 pence for every litre to 9 pence,which resulted in a huge debt ()With no way to
repay it,his choices were to sell everything he could and stop farming or try something
different.Cunningham decided on the second option.Inspired by the approach to farming in
his grandfather's time,as well as the returnable packaging system he'd seen at Mercedes,he
shifted from supplying supermarkets to organic milk production and direct sales.Today,his
farm,Mossgiel Organic Farm in Mauchline processes about 1.5 million litres of organic milk a
year.
The journey from near-bankruptcy(颜临破产)to award-winning sustainable business
hasn't been without its ups and downs.Lockdowns during Covid-19 brought the food and
hotel industry-which then accounted for 95%of Mossgiel's sales-to a standstill."We
went from selling lots of milk to selling no milk,so we had to switch to doorstep sales,which
turned out to be a success,"says Cunningham.
Just as he was getting the farm back on its feet,the energy and cost of living crises came
along and Cunningham almost went out of business again.He decided to launch a crowdfund
Almost 400 people invested,which has allowed the farm to buy new equipment to bottle and
deliver more milk."It's all about bringing the community together,"says Cunningham.He
hopes to work with more organic farmers across Scotland,and eventually supply milk and
other organic products across the UK.
