Eleven-year-old Ruby has a unique hobby — making wishes come true for nursing home residents in Harrison, Arkansas. Inspired by her mother’s work as a nurse, Ruby accompanied her mother to the nursing homes during the summer and has developed a close bond with the elderly residents.
One day, Ruby noticed a resident named Pearl looking sad while staring out of a window. When she asked what was wrong, Pearl explained that she had seen her dog being taken away, and she didn’t know when she would see her beloved pet again. It broke Ruby’s heart, and she decided to take action. She began asking the residents what three things they wanted most in the world. To her surprise, their requests were simple — chocolate bars, McDonald’s fries, and pants that fit properly.
Ruby and her mother used their own money to achieve the wishes of around 100 residents within three months. Soon, they started receiving donations from the kind-hearted people of Harrison. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, they set up a GoFundMe page called “Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents” to collect $5,000. They reached their goal within a month.
When GoFundMe recognized Ruby as a Kid Hero and shared her story worldwide, donations poured in. In just 24 hours, they raised $20,000, and within five months, the total surpassed $250,000. With these funds, they were able to grant more creative wishes, such as creating a man cave for one resident with a Walkman and snacks, and providing financial assistance for another resident to attend an out-of-state wedding.
Motivated by their success, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents became a nonprofit organization and expanded nationwide. Their new goal is to set up a shared laptop in at least one nursing home in each state. Ruby’s passion for kindness drives her to continue her efforts, and her acts of kindness serve as a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.

With a gentle lift of the hands, a slow rise of the body and a steady bend of the knees, taijiquan has been practised for centuries by people of all ages and backgrounds. More than an exercise, it is a way of life that combines physical health with deep philosophical insight rooted in traditional Chinese culture, such as the pursuit of harmony between humans and nature.
Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020, taijiquan has since gained wider popularity, reaching more than 180 countries and regions. Now, it takes another graceful step onto the global stage: on November 5, 2025, UNESCO approved a resolution designating March 21 as International Taijiquan Day, giving this centuries-old art a day of its own to be celebrated worldwide.
This is the first time an international day has been named after a martial art within the UN system, marking growing global recognition of traditional Chinese sports and their potential to contribute to global well-being. The choice of March 21 is symbolic, as it falls on the Spring Equinox — a solar term where day and night are of equal length, mirroring taijiquan’s principles of yin-yang balance and harmonious coexistence.
According to UNESCO, the new international day will promote the popularization and exchange of taijiquan, as well as its core ideas: “balance between yin and yang”, “pursuit of peace”, “harmonious coexistence”, “mutual respect” and “overcoming strength with gentleness”. It will foster civilizational exchanges and mutual learning, ultimately contributing to world peace.

A. The global popularity of taijiquan B. The cultural and philosophical value of taijiquan
C. The health benefits of practicing taijiquan D. The history of taijiquan development
29. On which date did UNESCO approve the resolution to designate March 21 as International Taijiquan Day
A. March 21, 2025 B. November 5, 2024
C. November 5, 2025 D. The Spring Equinox
30. The word “foster” in the last paragraph most probably means .
A. Prevent B. promote C. reduce D. ignore
31. What can we infer about the purpose of International Taijiquan Day
A. It aims to replace other cultural exchange events.
B. It will only be celebrated in China.
C. It seeks to promote global peace through cultural exchange.
D. It focuses solely on the physical benefits of taijiquan.

The outer part of our brain, called the cerebral cortex, is responsible for thinking and decision-making. Over millions of years, this area has evolved greatly in humans and other primates (灵长目动物). It now has more cells, a larger size, and a folded surface — all these changes help the brain process information more effectively.
Scientists have long known that excitatory neurons (兴奋性神经元) — cells that send “start” signals to other brain areas — increased in number as brains evolved. But new research reveals that inhibitory neurons (抑制性神经元) also grew in quantity. These cells act like the brain’s “brakes” or “balancers”: they slow down overactive brain activity when things get too busy. This balance is key to helping us focus, learn, and make wise decisions.
In fact, human brains have a higher proportion of these balancing cells compared to the brains of animals like mice. This likely makes human brain networks more flexible. All mammals have inhibitory neurons, but humans and other primates have more diverse types of them.
How did we gain more of these valuable cells Scientists discovered special progenitor cells (前体细胞) in the developing brain — think of them as “starter” or “builder” cells. A unique type of these builder cells exists only in primates. They produce a large number of balancing neurons and glial cells (神经胶质细胞), which support and protect brain tissue (脑组织).
Interestingly, many genes linked to autism (自闭症) are active in these builder cells. This means that studying how our brain evolved may not only deepen our understanding of human intelligence but also shed light on certain brain development disorders.
32. What is this passage mainly about
A. The reasons behind the increased weight of the human brain.
B. How inhibitory neurons contribute to human brain evolution.
C. The relationship between brain cells and oxygen supply.
D. Effective methods for memory improvement through training.
33. What is the main job of inhibitory neurons
A. To send fast signals across the brain.
B. To help the brain grow bigger.
C. To slow down brain activity and help with focus.
D. To create folds on the brain’s surface.
34. What can be inferred about the special “builder” cells found in primates
A. They are solely responsible for the development of disorders like autism.
B. They play a crucial role in building complex brains, though they may be associated with certain disorders.
C. They are functionally identical to similar cells found in non-primate mammals.
D. They inhibit the brain’s ability to adapt and learn new information.
35. Where can we most likely find this passage
A. A textbook. B. A science magazine.
C. A research report. D. A guide book.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. B 35. B

It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning. I had just finished a long week of schoolwork and was looking forward to a relaxing day. At first, I planned to stay at home and watch some of my favorite TV shows. However, my best friend Linda, tied up with homework, called to say she’d left her textbook at school and ask me to get it for their afternoon study session. I agreed and headed to the school.
When I arrived at the school bus stop, there were a lot of people. Some were rushing to catch their buses, while others were waiting patiently. Among the crowd, I noticed a young woman pacing back and forth, looking extremely anxious. She was holding a map in her hand, but it seemed like she was having a hard time making sense of it. Next to her stood a man, who was constantly checking his watch and shaking his head in frustration (沮丧).
Feeling curious, I walked over and asked in a friendly tone, “Are you okay It looks like you’re having some trouble.” The woman looked up and explained, “We’re tourists from another country, and we’re trying to get to the famous art museum in the city, but we can’t figure out which bus to take.”
I smiled reassuringly (安慰地). “Don’t worry. I can help you with that. I’ve lived in this city for a long time, and I know the bus routes (路线) well.” The man’s face lit up, and he said,” That would be wonderful! We’ve been standing here for ages, and we’re starting to get really worried that we’ll miss our chance to visit the museum.”

When I finally returned from school with the textbook, Linda was anxiously waiting for me.

【答案】One possible version:
I pointed out the nearest bus stop heading to the museum to them. I carefully explained to them how to get there. To make sure they wouldn’t get lost, I even drew a simple route diagram on a piece of paper, for which they were extremely grateful. They kept thanking me, saying that without my help, they would have been in a real mess. After making sure they understood the directions clearly, I realized that I had spent quite some time helping them. Looking at my watch, I suddenly remembered Linda’s textbook. I hurriedly said goodbye to the tourists and rushed to school to get Linda’s textbook.
When I finally returned from school with the textbook, Linda was anxiously waiting for me. “There you are. I’ve been calling you nonstop,” she exclaimed, grabbing the textbook eagerly. I quickly explained how I’d helped the lost tourists find their way to the museum and how that had delayed me slightly. Linda laughed and said, “Only you would help strangers when you’re already doing someone else a favor!” We both laughed as we headed to our study session, with me feeling satisfied that my morning had turned into something much more meaningful than just fetching a forgotten textbook.贵州省松桃民族中学2025-2026学年高二下学期4月期中考试
