Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old climber from Hunan.
Xu climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Africa on 1 January. She even stood on

For the next few years, Xu did hard training. She went to the mountains in Yunnan and
Sichuan every month, climbing mountains over 5,000 metres and doing daily physical (身体的)

a desert. The whole climbing took seven days, during which Xu faced changeable weather
such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were the main challenge.

Tom is a 14-year-old boy from Kunming. Last month, he had a terrible experience that
taught him an important lesson about safety.
One Sunday afternoon, Tom was at home alone. He decided to cook some eggs for lunch.
He turned on the gas stove and put a pan on it. While waiting for the water to boil, he went to
his room to play on his phone. He forgot about the cooking completely.
About twenty minutes later, Tom smelled something burning. He ran to the kitchen and
saw smoke coming from the pan. The water had boiled away and the pan was on fire! Tom
was so scared that he didn’t know what to do at first. Then he remembered what his father
had told him: never use water to put out an oil fire. Instead, he should turn off the gas and
cover the pan with a lid.
Tom acted quickly. He turned off the gas and found a large lid. Carefully, he covered the
pan. Soon, the fire went out. Tom felt relieved (放心的) but his heart was still beating fast.
When his parents came home, Tom told them what had happened. His father said, “You
did the right thing, son. But remember, never leave the kitchen when you’re cooking. Safety
always comes first.”
Tom learned his lesson. Now, he is always careful when he cooks. He wants to share his
story with other teenagers: “Cooking is fun, but we must be careful. A small mistake can

One family, many arguments (争论)
Sometimes, families can be hard. Arguments happen. People get upset. Sometimes they
stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs. I’d say we’re probably one of the
more argumentative (好争吵的) families there.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the the youngest one of the family. We
grew up in quiet a small house and often didn’t have lots of money. My mum and dad argued,
pretty much all the time, over just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used
to argue too. But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator, the person who tries to look
at both sides of the argument and tries to bring the arguing parties together to make peace.
“Dad, you shouldn’t have said that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys,
we all love each other. It’s just been a bad day,” I’d say to try and calm things down.
I learned much growing up in an argumentative family. Patience, understanding, and the
knowledge (知识) that sometimes things just don’t go your way. We all make mistakes. We all
say things we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Put yourself in the other
person’s shoes and stay calm. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If
something is wrong, it needs to be addressed (设法解决) and sometimes, we get angry about it.
But as long as we can reflect (反思 ) and look at things with an attitude (观点 ) of care and
responsibility (责任), we can weather the storm and help each other out.
32. What do we know about the writer’s family
A. The writer is the youngest in the family.
B. His parents get along well with each other.
C. The writer never joined any family arguments.
33. What does a mediator do
A. Start an argument .
B. Help one side fight the other .
C. Balance (平衡) both sides.
