四、阅读理解
When an epidemic hit our region, many of us turned to TV to pass the time. Neeti Goel and her children Anishka, age 15 and Arav, age 17, turned to volunteering to help those in need of a warm meal and a bit of sunshine in their lives. Neeti and her children began preparing casseroles (炖菜) and soups for Homeland Hospice patients and their families.
“We started with the desire to volunteer,” Neeti says. “It wasn’t long before we perfected our work and began preparing meals twice a month.” A month into their volunteering work, Anishka and Arav took on most of the cooking and expanded their menu to include soups. “It felt good to know we were helping others,” Anishka says. “Volunteering for a brief amount of time can make a big difference.”
After months of meal preparation for Homeland, Neeti and her children began helping two additional hospice (临终安养院) organizations in the region. As their work expanded, so did their grocery (食品杂货) bill. Anishka and Arav decided to start their own nonprofit (非营利的) organization to raise funds to pay for the food needed to prepare meals. The teens founded Rays of Sunshine to bring a bit of light to families in their time of need.
From working with a lawyer to creating a website, Anishka and Arav did everything. The experiences provided valuable life skills as well as resources to keep their love of helping others going.
Rays of Sunshine held its first fundraising event a few days ago. “We have raised more than $1,500,” Arav says. “The funds will help us continue making meals for families.” The event not only raised funds, but brought awareness of the power of volunteerism at any age and the work of Homeland Hospice.
Neeti, Anishka and Arav, never dreamed their decision to volunteer would create a transformational experience for the family. They simply set out to make someone’s day a bit brighter. “We were so pleased to learn how much the families enjoyed our cooking,” Neeti says. “It has been wonderful for us to work together as a family.”

五、阅读七选五
Watching a film critically is a skill worth developing because it helps you learn what makes a film good according to your own tastes. What makes the early films of a director great fun while the later ones a total mess 31 In this article, we take a look at how you can watch films more critically.
Give the film your undivided attention at least once. Filmmakers accept that they won’t always have their audience’s complete attention. Characters’ names might be repeated to make sure that you’ve heard them. Significant plot points will be highlighted with incidental music so that you focus. But for the most part, a filmmaker will hope that you’ll be focusing on the film rather than having one eye on your friend’s party photos. 32
Consider the themes the film explored. Picking out the themes and assessing how the film treats them is a central point of film criticism. A film’s theme could be something quite unexpected; for instance, it might be an uncomfortable allegory (寓言). 33 For instance, The Lion King drew on the plot of Hamlet. Does it breathe new life into the story and take it in an interesting direction Or does it come across as an unimaginative copy of someone else’s better idea
Analyze sound, lighting and production. There are some aspects of a film that you seldom notice unless they go wrong. You may only notice sound if the levels are all wrong and the incidental music drowns out the dialog. Lighting, similarly, you may only notice if everything is so bright that it looks like the action is taking place in a dentist’s office. 34 You might consider how the choice of costume brightens a character, or how well-judged lighting decisions make a scene just right.
35 It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that there is something that is objectively good or bad. But if you find yourself loving a film that other people seem to dislike, that isn’t necessarily a sign that there’s something wrong with your taste. Try to work out why your opinion might differ from other people’s. It could be that a film’s sense of humor agrees with your own, or that a film reflects your life experiences.
A.Don’t forget that it’s all subjective.
B.Think about why you did or didn’t enjoy it.
C.Try, just once, to watch the film as they intended.
D.Try to train yourself to see these aspects of a film every time.
E.How was the film constructed to provide a new insight into the theme
F.Why do some films greatly excite people while others send people to sleep
G.You can also consider if the film has drawn any inspiration from other source material.
