In modern society, many retired people are lonely and lack life purpose while many young people have their own problems.1. Or they may wish to live independently but be unable to pay the high rents in their area.
2. It involves bringing older and younger people together to support each other.
After all,old people represent a huge unused resource: they include retired engineers,

In some projects, retired people help out in primary schools,to hear children read and offer them individual support.Similar projects are run in secondary schools and even universities.
Other projects involve sending children and teenagers into old people’s homes on a regular basis to teach them “digital skills”,to entertain them or simply befriend them and listen to their stories and advice.4. The students can either live rent-free in exchange for household chores and support for the homeowner,or they can pay a reduced rent in exchange for chatting with the older person regularly and keeping an eye on their health and well-being.
Intergenerational volunteering projects have had a truly significant impact on both sides.By bringing together people of different generations and socioeconomic backgrounds,
they have built trust, respect and friendship.5.
A.These are important for the structure of society.

C.Intergenerational volunteering can provide a solution to these problems.

The Art of Effective Communication
In today’s interconnected world, effective communication is not just a skill, but a necessity.Whether we are at work,at school,or in our personal lives, the ability to convey our thoughts and feelings clearly and respectfully is crucial.
Effective communication begins with understanding the audience. Before we speak or write, it is important to consider who we are communicating with and what their needs, expectations, and emotions might be.This awareness helps us to tailor our message in a way that is most likely to be understood and appreciated.
Active listening is another key element of effective communication. It involves giving full attention to the speaker, showing empathy, and avoiding interruptions.Active listening not only helps us to fully grasp the speaker’s intended meaning, but also demonstrates our respect for their point of view.
Non-verbal communication, such as body language and facial expressions, also plays a significant role in how our message is received.A smile,a nod,or a raised eyebrow can convey a message that words alone cannot express. Therefore,it is important to be aware of our own non-verbal cues and how they might be interpreted by others.
Feedback is another crucial aspect of effective communication. It allows us to assess how well our message has been understood and received.Constructive feedback can help us to improve our communication skills and better meet the needs of our audience.
In conclusion, effective communication is a multifaceted skill that requires attention to both verbal and non-verbal elements.By understanding our audience, practising active listening, being aware of our non-verbal cues, and seeking feedback,we can greatly improve our ability to communicate effectively with others.

I had always been fascinated by the use of natural treatments in healthcare. So,when I came across a local clinic that offered courses in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) several months ago,I immediately signed up for a one-year course.
On the first day of class,I was looking forward to what I was going to learn. As the instructor explained the procedure,I felt a little disturbed by the thought of needles being stuck into my skin. However,I was determined to overcome my fear. The acupuncturist uses hair-thin needles to find specific areas on the body to treat pain or tension the body may be experiencing, known to help with depression, insomnia (失眠) and anxiety. The instructor told us that an acupuncturist might request patients to provide more information about their health, how to treat them, and what points are most appropriate for them.We were taught how to examine a patient’s tongue and pulse to gather evidence of any imbalances in the body.He showed us how to adjust the needle’s depth,as different organs require different depths. The needles were only a few millimetres thick,so they were easy to switch out.
In class,we also learnt about the phenomenon of acupuncture anesthesia (麻醉) where patients could undergo surgery without conventional anesthesia using only acupuncture. As we progressed through the course,we learnt about herbs and their uses.We also discussed the effects of substances on the body.
TCM dates back to ancient China, and it is a widespread practice today. It is fascinating to learn about the symbolism behind each organ and how they relate to different emotions and imbalances in the body. After a year of wrestling with the course,I have now graduated and put everything in place.Without doubt,it has been one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life.

As vast fields surrounding Beijing and Shanghai transformed into towering skyscrapers,
and old bicycles gave way to motor vehicles, the essence of music communication remained unchanged over these shifts.
“I’ll never forget that I’ve never seen so many bicycles in my life,” Philadelphia Orchestra (管弦乐团) violinist Davyd Booth said, recalling his first tour in China 50 years ago.“Everyone rode a bicycle. There were literally hundreds, thousands.”
In November 2023,14 musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra, including Booth,
returned to China, with performances scheduled in Beijing,Tianjin,Suzhou and Shanghai. The tour marked the 50th anniversary (周年纪念日) of their first visit in the 1970s,celebrating the unique friendship between China and the United States.Over the years, the orchestra had strengthened connections across China, with concerts and residencies that facilitate meaningful people-to-people interactions.
Booth said the 1970s tour was his first international trip with the orchestra. He considered himself lucky to have been part of the tour.He had just auditioned (试演) and got accepted into the orchestra that year. His official start date was scheduled after the orchestra’s return from China, but Booth received a call from the personnel manager informing him that someone had fallen ill.He then took the place and went to China.
“I was incredibly thrilled! Then, after I hung up,I realised I didn’t even have a passport,” Booth said. However,he got his passport and visa in just three days, thanks to the strong support from both countries. With his violin in tow,Booth joined the team on the 15-hour flight to China.
In addition to some regular compositions, the Philadelphia Orchestra also played the Yellow River Concerto, one of the most popular piano concertos in China even today. The Philadelphia Orchestra cooperated on this ensemble (合奏) with a Chinese pianist, marking the earliest ties between the US and China in music.
“After the concert, the team was hanging around on the streets,” Booth said.“It was a fun experience even though people did not know how to talk to locals because of language barriers.”“You could communicate a lot by smiling, and it worked out very, very well,” he added.
