The data shows the population of wild Asian elephants in southwest China’s Yunnan Province has increased from around 150 to more than 300 from the 1980s to the end of 2023.
With the growth in the elephant population, conflicts between humans and elephants have become frequent. In order to fundamentally and peacefully solve the issue and protect the elephant’s habitat at the same time, construction of the Asian Elephant National Park is picking up speed.Experts suggest that national parks are not meant to be entirely free of people.
Instead, they should offer a method for coexistence.
Asian elephants play an important role as engineers of the rainforest, said an expert.Their migration (迁徙) can speed up the replacement of forest ecosystems along the way.Elephant waste remains not only a delicacy for insects, but also attracts insectivorous birds, allowing plant seeds to spread. Therefore, protecting the elephants and their habitats guarantees the shelter to other wildlife in forest ecosystems.
To cope with human-elephant conflicts,Yunnan Province took the lead in introducing a commercial insurance model into its compensation (补偿) system:Local residents will be paid with the amount of money for the crops destroyed by the elephants by the insurance company.
“The standard of compensation is constantly being adjusted, and the amount of insurance coverage for compensation is also increasing,” said a manager from a local insurance company.“At present, the insured amount in Pu’er City and Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna alone has already gone beyond 50 million.”

One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
As you know, the past several decades have witnessed the dramatic decrease of wild animals, some even being in danger of extinction.
Behind this I think several facts should be responsible for it.To begin with,it is human activities that contribute to the destruction of the wild animals’ habitats. In addition, some people illegally hunt wild animals just for high profits. Now,everyone has become aware that wildlife protection is of great importance.
So it is high time for us to take measures to protect wild animals.First of all,it is necessary to set up nature reserves.Besides, various activities can be held to raise people’s awareness of wildlife protection. We should promise that we won’t buy or eat wildlife.Only by doing so can we protect them from being endangered.

When it comes to balancing the needs of humans and the needs of nature, historically it was “develop or conserve” or “develop or restore”.However, now conservation methods are increasingly focusing on coexistence with nature and ecological resilience (恢复力).
The traditional model in coastal protection is that you build some kind of hard, fixed structures like a seawall, but conventional seawalls can have negative effects on biodiversity,
habitats, nutrient cycling and the environment at large.“In this case, coastal protection and biodiversity are really at odds,” says Carter Smith, who researches coastal restoration.
That’s where living shorelines come in.Living shorelines incorporate plants and natural materials like sand and rock to stabilise coastal areas and protect them from storms while also creating more natural habitats and minimising environmental destruction.Smith and his colleagues studied how living shorelines performed during multiple hurricanes and found that living shorelines had significantly less “visible damage or erosion” compared to sites with conventional storm protection infrastructure.
In addition to living shorelines, predators (捕食者) also play important roles in restoring ocean ecosystems.“One of the best examples we have of top predators facilitating ecosystems are tiger sharks in Australia,” says Prof.Brian Silliman, one of Smith’s colleagues. When the sharks are around, sea turtles eat fewer sea plants.“It’s not because the sharks eat a lot of sea turtles but because they scare them towards the shoreline.”
When physical stressors like climate change reach a certain point in a given ecosystem,
wildlife can rapidly decline. But wildlife that is adjusted to coexisting with a top predator may have a higher stress threshold (阈值).In our ever-changing world, the ability to adapt is as important as ever.“I think there’s great optimism and opportunity here,” Silliman says.“There is so much that we can learn from nature, and the more we can learn to coexist and to integrate our society with thriving ecosystems, the better it will be for everyone,” Smith agrees.

China’s Terraced Fields:A Cultural and Natural Heritage
In the heart of China, there are breathtaking landscapes that are not just a feast for the eyes but also a testament to human ingenuity. These are the terraced fields,or rice paddies, built on the slopes of mountains and hills.Unlike flat fields, these terraces are shaped like steps,
allowing water to flow from one level to another, making it possible to grow rice in areas where it would otherwise be difficult.
The most famous of these terraced fields can be found in Yuanyang,Yunnan Province.
Known as the Yuanyang Rice Terraces, they stretch over vast areas, forming a sea of green during the planting season and a mirror-like landscape when flooded for the rice to grow.
These terraces are not just a marvel of engineering; they are also a living cultural heritage,
reflecting the wisdom and traditions of the Hani people who have been farming them for over 1,300 years.
The Hani people have developed a unique water management system to support their terraced fields.Water from the mountain forests is channeled through a network of ditches and canals, ensuring that each terrace gets the water it needs. This system not only supports rice farming but also maintains the ecological balance of the region.
In addition to their practical function, the terraced fields have become a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world.Their beauty changes with the seasons,
offering different sights throughout the year.In spring, the terraces are flooded and gleam in the sunlight, while in summer they are covered in lush green.Autumn brings the golden harvest, and winter transforms them into a tranquil,snow-covered landscape.
