In many cultures, being a good guest is highly valued. However, what makes a good guest can be different from one country to another.
In China, guests are often treated like royalty. When you visit a Chinese home, you can expect to be offered tea, fruit, and snacks. The host will do everything to make you feel comfortable. In return, guests are expected to show appreciation and not be too demanding.
In Western countries, the guest-host relationship is often more relaxed. Guests are expected to be independent and follow the host’s routine. For example, if the host says “Make yourself at home”, it means you can feel free to get a drink or use the bathroom without asking.
One common rule everywhere is to bring a small gift when you are invited. It shows that you value the host’s invitation. Also, it is polite to offer help with cleaning up after a meal, though the host may refuse.
When in doubt, it is always a good idea to ask. A simple question like “Is there anything I can do to help ” shows that you are considerate.

They think these kinds of questions violate their privacy (隐私).
Family is important to everyone. In the East, kids live with their parents for a long time. They still listen to their parents’ advice after they grow up. However, in the West, independence is very important. After the kids grow up, they leave home and don’t need to listen to their parents’ advice anymore.
In the East and in the West, people think differently, too. People in the West think about small details (细节). They also think less and act more. But in the East, people pay attention to relationships between things, and they often keep their opinions quiet.

sounded(听起来)、smelled(闻起来)、tasted(尝起来)均与“interested”(感兴趣的)搭配不当,不符合语境。
此处需用副词修饰形容词amazing(令人惊叹的)。

make sb. do sth.
teach(教)、give(给)、take(拿)均与from搭配不当,不符合语境。

They think these kinds of questions violate their privacy (隐私).”
根据文章第2段“In the East, it takes a long time to become someone’s friend… When people from the West meet you, they will call you a friend right away”可知,在东方,要成为某人的朋友需要很长时间,而西方人见到你时,会立刻称你为朋友。 故选A。
根据文章第3段“in the West, independence is very important. After the kids grow up, they leave home”可知,西方孩子成年后独立生活,不再与父母同住。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“people think differently… in the West… small details… in the East… relationships between things”可知,本段主要讨论东西方思维习惯的差异。故选A。
Through the dialogue between Li Hong and Lucy, we can feel the different responses in some social occasions.
In China, when good friends have a chat, we usually stand side by side or hand in hand. However, Lucy says that things are different in America. In their country, they are supposed to stand with a physical distance of 0.45-1.2 metres, and even if they are good friends.
In China, people are generally more tolerant of casual touch from strangers and may not feel offended easily. But Lucy says that Americans will think that they are offended when someone touches them.
What a difference! There are different social manners in different countries. We respect each other’s customs and habits.

Dear Tina,
I’m so glad that you are coming to China soon. Now, I’d like to share some tips about the Chinese customs with you.
Firstly, it’s common to greet people by shaking hands and saying “Ni hao” when you meet somebody for the first time in China. Secondly, remember to bring a small gift, such as fruit or flowers. And be sure to take off your shoes as soon as you enter their home.
Thirdly, you shouldn’t start eating first unless the host asks you to at the table. Besides, never stick the chopsticks into a bowl of rice or point at others with your chopsticks — they’re considered to be rude. As for good conversation topics, food and hobbies are safe.
I hope the advice is helpful. Please feel free to ask if you want to know more.
Yours,
Yaming
