The World‘s Waterfalls
Waterfalls are among nature’s most breathtaking creations. One of the most famous is Niagara Falls, located on the border between Canada and the United States. Millions of tourists visit every year to witness its powerful flow. In winter, the mist from the falls freezes on nearby trees, creating amazing ice sculptures.
In South America, there is Angel Falls in Venezuela. It is the world‘s tallest waterfall, with a height of 979 metres—that’s more than three times the height of the Eiffel Tower! The water drops straight down from the top of a mountain deep in the rainforest. The only way to reach it is by plane or by a long river trip.
China is also home to many beautiful waterfalls. The Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou Province is famous for its impressive width. During the rainy season, the waterfall becomes even more powerful and can be heard from far away. Visitors can stand behind the waterfall and look through the curtain of water.
These natural wonders remind us how powerful and beautiful nature truly is. Every year, more people travel to see these amazing sights.

The Power of the Yangtze River
The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and the third longest in the world. It stretches about 6,300 kilometres from the mountains of Qinghai Province to the East China Sea. The river runs through 11 provinces, providing water and energy to millions of people.
The Three Gorges Dam, built on the Yangtze River, is the world‘s largest hydroelectric power station. It produces huge amounts of electricity—enough to power the entire city of Shanghai several times over. The dam also helps control floods, which once caused great damage along the river.
However, building the dam also had some negative effects. Millions of people had to move to new homes because their villages were flooded. Some rare animals, like the Chinese sturgeon, were affected by the changes in the river’s ecosystem.
Today, scientists are working hard to protect the Yangtze River‘s environment. China has introduced a ten-year fishing ban in the river to help fish populations recover. The government is also planting trees along the riverbanks to reduce pollution.
This great river is not just water—it is the lifeblood of China. Protecting it means protecting the future of millions of people.

What negative effect did the dam have
A. Many people had to move away.

C. It destroyed all the fish.
D. It made the river too cold.
What has China done to help fish in the Yangtze River

Life in the Desert
When most people think of deserts, they think of dry sand and unbearable heat. But in fact, deserts are more than just wastelands. They are home to unique plants and animals that have adapted to survive in difficult conditions.
The Sahara Desert in Africa is the largest hot desert in the world. It covers about 9 million square kilometres—almost the size of China! During the day, temperatures can rise above 50°C. At night, however, the temperature can drop below freezing. This huge change makes survival extremely hard.
Yet, many creatures call the Sahara home. The fennec fox, with its large ears, uses them to release heat and hear prey moving underground. The dromedary camel can go for days without water. It stores fat in its hump, which it uses for energy when food is scarce.
Plants have also found ways to survive. The date palm grows near oases, where water is available. Its deep roots can reach groundwater below the surface. Other plants have small leaves to reduce water loss and grow far apart so they don’t compete for water.
Recently, scientists discovered that certain desert plants can absorb water from morning fog. This clever adaptation allows them to survive even in areas without rain for years.
Deserts remind us that life finds a way, even in the harshest environments.
What is the Sahara Desert
A. The largest hot desert in the world. B. The coldest desert in the world.
C. The smallest desert in Africa. D. The wettest place on Earth.
How do fennec foxes use their large ears
A. To store fat. B. To release heat and hear prey.
C. To attract mates. D. To protect against sand.
How can date palms survive in the desert
A. They store water in their leaves. B. They have very shallow roots.
C. They only grow when it rains. D. Their roots can reach groundwater.
What did scientists recently discover about some desert plants
A. They can grow without any water.
B. They can absorb water from fog.
C. They can move to find water.
D. They can live for 1,000 years.
What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To describe the Sahara Desert’s size.
B. To show how hot deserts can be.
C. To explain how living things survive in deserts.
D. To compare different deserts around the world.

China’s Newest World Heritage Site
In 2025, a new site in China was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List—the Badain Jaran Desert. This amazing place is located in Inner Mongolia. It is famous for its rare combination of sand dunes and lakes.
The Badain Jaran Desert is home to the world‘s tallest fixed sand dune, which rises about 500 metres high. Covering it are over 140 lakes scattered among the golden sand. The lakes are different colours, including green, pink, and purple. This strange phenomenon is caused by different minerals and microorganisms in each body of water.
Scientists are particularly interested in how these lakes stay full despite being surrounded by one of the driest environments on Earth. Recent studies point to an underground water system that flows under the desert from the distant Qilian Mountains.
Now a UNESCO site, the Badain Jaran Desert is hoping to attract more visitors who want to experience this unique landscape. Visitors can climb the tall sand dunes, swim in the colourful lakes, and camp under the stars. Thanks to strict new protections, the government will carefully manage tourism to prevent damage to this delicate environment.
This latest addition to the World Heritage List shows that even the world’s driest places have hidden wonders waiting to be discovered.
Answer the following questions:
When was the Badain Jaran Desert added to the UNESCO World Heritage List

My Favourite Landscape
My favourite landscape is the Huangshan Mountain in Anhui Province. It is one of the most famous mountains in China.
The mountain is known for its strange pine trees, unusual rocks, and the sea of clouds. When you stand on the top, the clouds below look like an ocean. The sunrise there is also breathtaking. The sky turns from dark to orange, and the sun slowly rises above the clouds.
I love this place because it makes me feel peaceful and close to nature. Every time I see pictures of it, I want to visit again.
