Everyone knows what makes a good story.Our heroes start their journeys as flawed beings.In scene after scene, they face challenges that push them down new paths.By the end of these tales, they overcome setbacks and become better people in the process.
　　We love these plots in the novels we read but the principles of a good story offer much more than entertainment.Research shows that the narratives we tell ourselves about our lives can powerfully help us recover from stress.People who generate tales of struggling and turning over a new leaf from their own lives appear to have much better mental health.Professor Dan McAdams put forward this idea and discovered that whether someone can describe having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of mental health.Another key theme involved is finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events.
McAdams invited 14- and 15-year-olds to join in an experiment to write about their experiences of failure and success.Half of them were then given extra instructions to describe the ways they had made their success a reality and how the failure had changed them for the better.Eight weeks later, members of this group reported greater persistence and better grades in their schoolwork.
Exciting as these results are, some experts sound a few notes of caution.They worry that, hearing about the power of self-narratives, many people may feel they have to find a positive turning point in life.If they can’t, they could end up feeling guilty about having somehow “failed”.

Aimed at helping us high school students make friends by writing letters, an activity was held by our city last week.
The activity was held among all the high schools in our city.It began with the participants writing a letter, in which they made a self-introduction and shared all the topics they were interested in.Then the letters were randomly sent to students in other schools.It’s not hard to imagine how excited we were when receiving a letter from a stranger.It was with this traditional method of communication that we made new friends to share our sorrow and happiness.
All in all, not only did the activity promote mutual communication among students, but it also relieved the pressure brought by intense study.

Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs Carter’s store and help her.Having Evan around relieved Mrs Carter’s boredom while she was working.Some customers found Evan lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers.Mrs Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs Carter was emotional. They had grown closer for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her.
While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet.The envelope contained 200 dollars.When handing him the bouquet, she said,“Will you come to see me someday, Evan I’d be delighted to have you here.”
“I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs Carter.
