When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to escape from Ramsgate, the harbor town where I grew up on the Isle of Thanet. It could feel small: the same faces in the same places, and where a new café or gallery was often met with doubt. There was this apparent insistence that life was fine as it was. But for a teenager eager to see more, that lack of curiosity was disheartening.
So I left. I headed north for a four-year academic journey from York to Durham. After university, having played at newspapers, I made the move to London to do it for real. But the reality was tough, I struggled to get my daily articles done right before my period started. In my twenties, I threw myself into city life: trying out Mediterranean restaurants, taking the Tube everywhere, and staying out late with friends.
For a while, it was enough. Then it became too much. In and among the sharing plates, I found myself on an unending rat race of moving faster and needing to earn more-just to keep up. Rents in London were pressing, apartments were tiny, yet the dream of owning one felt like a cruel joke.
As I got older, trips back to Thanet opened my eyes to what I had left behind. Mainly, it was the sea. Wide yellow sands and even the touch of salt in the air, ordinary in childhood, suddenly felt appealing. But I also started to miss the beat of small-town life: waving to people on the street, noticing whose garden was overgrown, finding charm even in the pubs I had once ignored. What’s more, where I’d once hurried to leave, others are now rushing to arrive. Artists, creatives, and technologists have been priced out of London and are pouring to Thanet, bringing new ideas and drive. Now, when I head back home, I feel a mixture of pride and mild wonder: the place I once thought I’d outgrown has had a facelift I wasn’t expecting.
I’ll keep returning to Thanet, with eager willingness. Each visit reminds me that places, like people, can grow without losing their essence. I’ve come to love Thanet as more than just the home I left; it is now the place it continues to become.
24. Why did the author want to leave Ramsgate
A. It offered few job opportunities.
B. It lacked modern entertainment.
C. It stuck to values he disagreed with.
D. It failed to satisfy his desire to explore.
25. What does the author say about her life in London
A. She enjoyed a relaxed and balanced lifestyle.
B. She struggled with high living expenses and intense competition.
C. She quickly achieved her dream of owning an apartment.
D. She rarely went out with her friends due to work pressure.
26. What can we learn about the author’s bond with Thanet over time
A. It remains stable and strong.
B. It is influenced by public opinions.
C. It shifts from rejection to reconnection.
D. It is shaped by his childhood experience.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Sea in Memory B. Four Years Up North
C. The Hometown Out of Reach D. A Growing Place, a Growing Me

In French culture, seven is known as l’ ge de raison — the age at which children can tell right from wrong and assume some moral responsibility. Yet France’s national rail operator appears to disagree. They believe that children must be at least 12 to behave appropriately on a train.
Earlier this month, SNCF, the state-owned railway company, launched its new Optimum Plus tariff (费用) on weekday rail services between Paris and Lyon, offering larger seats, better food and no under-12s. Designed to attract business travellers, the move aroused criticism and a wider debate about the place of children in society, particularly at a time of declining birthrates. “We can’t say we’re not having enough children and at the same time try to exclude them from everywhere,” argued Sarah El Hairy, a French official.
Those who have endured long journeys with noisy children may understand the appeal of child-free spaces. But the reaction reflects a strong cultural objection. France traditionally grants children autonomy and responsibility, prioritising their integration into wider society. Children are expected to take part in everyday rituals, from elaborate school lunches to polite greetings. The underlying logic is simple: treating children as valued, responsible members of society helps them become respectful adults. Excluding them from public spaces weakens that lesson.
The “no kids” rule therefore struck a nerve. SNCF, closely tied to French identity and summer holidays, is generally family-friendly. For example, activity packs are distributed to young travellers, and summer trains often carry groups of children heading to camps. After the social media storm, SNCF stressed that the new tariff applies to only 8% of weekday seats on one route and later removed references to a minimum age. Yet debate continues.
Critics argue that a society unwilling to tolerate children is troubling. The controversy also connects with demographic (人口的) anxiety. Although France still has one of the highest birth rates in the EU, births have fallen sharply, with 24% fewer babies born last year than in 2010. The French government has called for expanding paid parental leave and maintaining extensive family support. Still, concerns about living costs and the climate crisis weigh heavily on decisions about parenthood.
SNCF’s policy may affect only a small number of seats, but the reaction matters. Keeping children welcome in public spaces will not reverse falling birth rates. Treating them as troubles, however, is unlikely to help.
28. Why did SNCF launch the Optimum Plus tariff
A. To offer larger seats to children under 12.
B. To appeal to frequent business travellers.
C. To encourage public discussion about children.
D. To promote the sale of rail tickets on weekends.
29. What can be inferred about SNCF according to the passage
A. It insists on the “no kids” rule despite strong opposition.
B. It has long been criticized for not being family-friendly.
C. It has attempted to soften the impact of the new policy.
D. It promises to grant young passengers more autonomy.
30. The “no kids” policy arouses public concern in France because _______.
A. it conflicts with France’s traditional attitude to children
B. it has further decreased the birth rate among French
C. it limits children’s access to all public transportation
D. it may cause stress-related nerve problems in children
31. What is the author’s overall attitude in the passage
A. Neutral and mixed about the policy’s social impact.
B. Concerned and critical of “no-kids” rule on board.
C. Worried but supportive of policies favouring parents.
D. Suspicious yet respectful of the rail operator’s policy.
D
Oceanic manta rays (蝠鲼) — the largest species of ray — may dive more than 1,200 metres deep to navigate the ocean, according to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.
Scientists tagged (给……加标签) 24 mantas in Raja Ampat, Indonesia; the Tumbes, Peru; and near Whangaroa, New Zealand, and then reviewed the data. They noticed that the rays were more likely to dive extremely deep off the coast of New Zealand: of the 2,705 tag-days of data collected, mantas dived to more than 500 metres on 79 days — 71 of these dives were around New Zealand.
“Far offshore, oceanic manta rays are capable of diving to depths greater than 1,200 metres, far deeper than previously thought,” says Calvin Beale from Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, one of the study authors.
The rays’ diving patterns offered a clue to the behaviour. The rays in New Zealand typically did a huge dive the day after entering deeper waters off the continental shelf. They swam sharply down but didn’t spend time at these depths, suggesting they weren’t feeding or avoiding predators. After returning to the surface, some swam more than 190km in the following days.
One reason to dip so far below the surface could be that the mantas are picking up signals about where they are, such as changes in the Earth’s magnetic field, or in oxygen, temperature and light levels.
“These dives, which are linked with increased horizontal travel, may play an important role in helping mantas gather information about their environment,” says Beale. “By diving and ‘sampling’ these signals, they could build a mental map that helps them navigate across vast, featureless stretches of open ocean.” In deeper waters, these clues can be more stable and predictable than at the surface, the scientists say.
More research is needed, but the study “reminds us that the deep ocean — which regulates Earth’s climate — remains poorly understood but vitally important,” says Beale.
32. How did the scientists conduct the research
A. They did field research.
B. They did experimental research.
C. They analysed data obtained first-hand.
D. They re-examined findings in previous researches.
33. What can be inferred from the rays’ dives
A. They dive into the deep sea to avoid predators.
B. It’s easier for them to hunt for food in the deep sea.
C. Diving in the deep sea helps them signal to peers better.
D. The environment-related information collected helps them navigate.
34. Which of the following can describe the study according to Beale
A. Fully explored but rarely valued. B. Carefully studied but barely functional.
C. Under-researched but critically essential. D. Well-understood and extremely significant.
35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage
A. To present a new study’s findings on manta rays’ deep dives.
B. To highlight the importance of further research on manta rays.
C. To explain how manta rays build mental maps for long-distance travel.
D. To compare the diving patterns of manta rays in different marine regions.

How to Handle Difficult People Without Losing Your Cool
You have spent hours on a project, only to have a coworker or superior criticize it for countless, non-existent flaws (瑕疵). ____36____ Your friend is ignoring you, and when you ask what the matter is, she replies, “Nothing,” and continues doing it anyway. People who are unreasonable or demanding — in work, family, or friendship — get on our nerves daily.
Dealing with difficult people requires thoughtful and consistent approaches. ____37____ Hypercritical colleagues may find fault with your report. It’s natural to get cross when they do so, but try to keep your eye on the ball. Your brother comments repeatedly that you organize family events poorly. Instead of engaging in a tense back-and-forth, ignore it and focus on issues that matter more. A friend complains all the time about your being late. Try not to conflict with him head on. ____38____
Besides, empathy and humour can be powerful tools to minimize the friction. You don’t have to accept their behaviour, but acknowledging their feelings can lower their defensiveness and make the conversation more constructive. Humour, when gentle and respectful, can lighten the mood and remove tension. However, don’t let the joke go too far. ____39____ Avoid sarcasm (讥讽) which may make things worse.
____40____ Be clear about what you will and will not tolerate. If someone crosses the line, it’s okay to step back. You don’t have to engage in arguments or explain yourself endlessly. Instead, you can end the conversation on a friendly but firm note.
A. The first rule is to brush it off.
B. It’s also important to set boundaries.
C. Above all, fight back if you get cross.
D. Instead, let it go so as not to sour the outing.
E. There’s a fine line between humor and offense.
F. Your teacher reminds you mildly of the paper deadline.
G. Your mother is breathing down your neck about your schedule.

I remember being happy for my friend Avery when she won the karate (空手道) championship we’d both competed in. But I’m embarrassed to admit I was also pretty envious! But when she and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland, though, things went the opposite way.
“I really hope I get picked to be Alice,” said Avery.
“You’d make a great Alice!” I said. “I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.” “So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse ” she asked.
“Exactly!” I said.
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theater office, where the director had posted the cast list.
“Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the Dormouse.”
“That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistake!”
But I really and truly was given the part of Alice. I’m pretty sure the reason I’d done well is that I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition (试镜). And the reason I hadn’t been nervous is that it hadn’t even occurred to me that I could get the major role.
“Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines ” I asked.
“You mean practice your lines ” Avery said, not even looking at me. “No, thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.”
“OK,” I said. “How about some day next week ”
“Sorry,” she mumbled. “I’m pretty sure I’m busy forever.”
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me for getting the lead role, they asked how I felt about it.
“Well, I’m confused,” I said. “Avery was so upset that I was picked to be Alice, she pretty much threw away our friendship.”
“Hmm,” said my mum. “Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend ” “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. I bet she’ll come around before too long.”
Over the following rehearsals (排练), Avery kept ignoring me on purpose.

Last week, our school launched a series of activities themed “Scientific Weight Management,” including expert lectures on balanced nutrition, fun fitness challenges, and BMI screenings. Students also participated in interactive workshops to learn about healthy eating habits and exercise routines.
The events received enthusiastic responses. Many found the practical tips helpful, while the fitness challenges boosted motivation. Teachers praised the focus on long-term health rather than quick fixes. This initiative has inspired our school community to adopt healthier lifestyles.
【答案】Over the following rehearsals(排练), Avery kept ignoring me on purpose. Mum’s words echoing in my mind, I supposed maybe we both needed some space. Then at rehearsal one day, I approached her and smiled, “You’re such a talented actor, and the way you say your lines is awesome.” “Thanks,” said Avery, “I figured out all the ways to perform it well.” A wave of pride flashed across her face. “Well,” I said, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. I’d love your help if you have any free time this week.”
She smiled. “I think I might be free on Thursday.” On hearing her words, I felt more than happy and smiled back. Avery came to practise with me as she promised. As expected, our play turned out marvellous, and the audience burst into cheers, pride filling in all of us. Although the friendship path between Avery and me was once a little rough, we eventually enjoyed the sweetness from each other. Mum was right, “Give your teammate a little time and understanding, and he or she just might come around before too long.”
