Edward O. Wilson, known as “the ant man”, was born on June 10, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents divorced when he was young, and he moved frequently throughout his childhood. Wilson grew up exploring the forests and wildlife. One of these adventures left him partly blind, but they also set off his lifelong fascination (着迷) with ants and their social structures.
Wilson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1955, he received his PhD from Harvard and worked there until retirement.
Wilson’s early study of ants led to his first major discovery in 1959: How ants communicate through the release of chemical signals.
Later, in 1990, Wilson and German biologist Bent Holldobler published their Pulitzer-winning The Ants. It detailed the insects’ social structure that was both valued by entomologists (昆虫学者) and accessible to general readers.
Another of Wilson’s major works started in the early 1960s when he teamed up with Robert MacArthur. The pair published The Theory of Island Biogeography, where they sought to explain why different places have different numbers of species.
What many consider to be Wilson’s most important contributions to evolutionary biology came in 1975 when he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. The work explored the genetic and evolutionary roots of animal behaviour and argued that genes shaped human behaviour. Wilson faced accusations (谴责) for these ideas but finally his work largely proved true. In 1978, his ideas on the role biology plays in human culture ended in On Human Nature, which won him a Pulitzer in 1979.
Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 20 books. He received more than 150 awards and honours from around the world. These accomplishments offered him a type of academic superstar status, but friends and colleagues said the polite Southerner remained down to earth. “One of the qualities I really admired about Professor Wilson was his ability to really listen to and engage with whomever he was interacting with, ” said Corrie S. Moreau, who was one of Wilson’s final advisees.
4. What contributed to Wilson’s passion for ants
A. His accidental disability. B. His boyhood spent in nature.
C. The school education he received. D. The discovery he made about ants.
5. What is the book On Human Nature about
A. The links between biology and human culture.
B. The distribution of different species.
C. The social structure of ants.
D. The role of chemical signals in communication.
6. According to the last paragraph, which word can best describe Wilson
A. Warm-hearted. B. Honest. C. Independent. D. Productive.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To promote Wilson’s most popular books.
B. To explain the social behavior of ants in detail.
C. To highlight the challenges Wilson faced in his personal life.
D. To introduce the life and key achievements of Wilson.

In one of the more unusual experiments we’ve seen recently, researchers attached a large pair of cartoonish huge eyes to the front of a small, self-driving vehicle — and it turns out that this kind of adaptation could actually improve pedestrian (行人) safety.
A pair of peepers on the front of driverless vehicles could, according to the researchers, give people standing by the road a better idea of whether they’ve been seen. That’s one useful bit of information to have when it comes to determining the perfect moment to cross in front of oncoming traffic. “If the car is not looking at the pedestrian, this implies that the car does not recognize the pedestrian,” said one of the researchers. “Thus, pedestrians can judge that they should not cross the street, thereby avoiding potential traffic accidents.”
For the purposes of this study, the researchers used a car which seemed as if no one was inside. A pair of large, swiveling (旋转的) eyes on the front were controlled by researchers, but in the future could be controlled by the car’s AI on an actual self-driving vehicle.
To keep the 18 participants safe, experiments were conducted in virtual reality. The volunteers — nine men and nine women — were asked to decide whether or not to cross the road as the car approached. Four scenarios (方案) were tested in total; two when the car was fitted with eyes, and two when it wasn’t. The researchers measured how often people hesitated to cross when it was in fact safe to do so, and how often they chose to cross when it was dangerous. Overall, the presence of the eyes led to safer and smoother crossing experiences for the participants.
However, there was a gender split in the results. For men, the eyes only really helped in dangerous situations, warning them to pause when they might otherwise proceed. For women, the eyes boosted confidence by signaling it was safe to cross.
8. What is the function of cartoonish huge eyes
A. Improving the safety of self-driving vehicles.
B. Helping people decide when to cross the road.
C. Keeping pedestrians in a complete safe state.
D. Promoting the appearance of self-driving vehicles.
9. What can we know about the experiments
A. There was a robot in the car.
B. The pair of large eyes were controlled by AI.
C. The experiments were designed by 18 volunteers.
D. Experiments weren’t conducted in real surroundings.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. How researchers did the experiments. B. Who conducted these experiments.
C. What conclusions researchers drew. D. What scenarios were tested in experiments.
11. Why does the author write the text
A. To advertise a new self-driving technology.
B. To enhance pedestrians’ awareness of safety.
C. To inform us of a new research of driverless vehicles.
D. To introduce the influence of a new type of car.
D
As the world’s oldest living organisms, trees have been our silent companions. Although they inspire a large quantity of fancy tales, the richness of what they say is beyond description.
The German forester Peter Wohlleben spent decades working and learning their secrets. Feelings are rarely applied to trees, but Wohlleben has done so without hesitation. According to Wohlleben, that humans do not speak the trees’ language does not mean they do not communicate. Trees are badly misunderstood even if they communicate with chemical and electrical signals.
Wohlleben claims that trees are creatures as human beings. In one of 50 cases, Wohlleben’s team sees the special friendships between trees, as they can distinguish between one individual and another. This means that trees do not treat all other trees the same. For instance, Wohlleben saw two old beeches standing next to each pared to the usual case, each one growing its branches turned away from the other rather than toward each other. This kind of partnership is well-known to foresters. They know that such tree pairs are really like a human couple. If they chop one down, they need to chop down both because the other will die anyway.
Trees were also found to keep each other alive in different ways. They pass food to nearby sick trees and send signals to warn others of dangerous insects. In one of his investigations, Wohlleben also discovered a beech tree cut about 400 to 500 years ago. The trunk is still alive and was found with green chlorophyll (叶绿素) under the thick bark. Since it has no leaves to create sugar, the only explanation is that neighbouring trees have supported this tree for more than centuries.
The trees that suffered through drought were found to consume less water in the spring so that they will have more water available in the summer months. This implies that a tree can learn and remember a drought its whole life, acting on that memory by being more cautious about its water consumption.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To arouse readers’ interest. B. To demonstrate a heated debate.
C. To present a new discovery. D. To introduce a topic.
13. According to Wohlleben’s research, what can we learn about trees
A. Trees communicate in the same way as humans.
B. Trees are loyal to their partners.
C. Trees can’t tell friends and enemies apart.
D. Trees can keep each other alive within limited periods.
14. Why do some trees consume less water in the spring
A. Because they have more water available in summer
B. Because they have suffered through drought before.
C. Because they don’t need so much water in the spring.
D. Because they can depend on the support from other trees.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Trees can adapt to the environment B. Trees are our silent companions
C. Mysteries of trees are uncovered D. Trees can form special relationships

Should We Order Take-out Foods at School
In recent years, take-out foods are very popular in China. Some people are used to having delicious foods delivered directly to their dinner table. This surely saves them much trouble, as they don’t have to spend time cooking a meal for themselves.
But as high school students, should we order take-out foods online at school Personally, I don’t think it right to do so. Firstly, it’s known to all that take-out foods are usually delivered in plastic containers. Countless plastic bags and boxes will cause white pollution to our school. Secondly, there can be health risks involved in the take-out foods.
So in my view, take-out foods must be banned from entering school, so that we can have a good environment and better health.
