A Boy’s Brave Act in a Tsunami
In 2011, a big tsunami hit the east coast of Japan. Many people lost their homes and lives, but a 13-year-old boy named Ken saved his family and neighbors with his knowledge of tsunamis.
Ken was at home with his little sister when he felt a strong earthquake. He remembered his science teacher’s words: after a strong earthquake near the sea, a tsunami may come soon. He looked out of the window and saw the sea water moving strangely—it was pulling back quickly.
Without thinking, Ken took his little sister’s hand and ran to his parents’ room. He told them that a tsunami was coming and they needed to leave their house immediately. His parents were shocked but trusted Ken. They ran out of the house and started to warn their neighbors. Ken’s neighbors didn’t believe him at first, but when they saw the sea water disappearing, they followed Ken’s family to higher ground.
A few minutes later, a huge wave crashed into their village, destroying many houses. But Ken’s family and 12 neighbors were all safe because of Ken’s quick thinking and knowledge. Ken said, "I’m glad I remembered my teacher’s lesson. It helped me save the people I love."

How to Stay Safe During a Tsunami
Tsunamis are one of the most dangerous natural disasters. They can come suddenly and cause great damage, but there are ways to stay safe if you know what to do.
First, you should learn the signs of a coming tsunami. The most common sign is the sea water suddenly pulling back, leaving the seabed exposed. You may also see thick froth on the waves or hear a loud roaring sound like a train. If you see any of these signs, you must act quickly.
Second, if you are on the beach and notice the signs of a tsunami, leave the beach immediately. Do not stay to take photos or pick up things from the seabed. Run to higher ground as fast as you can—hills, tall buildings, or high roads are safe places.
Third, if you are in a low-lying area near the sea, listen to the tsunami warning on the radio or TV. Follow the instructions of the local government and leave the area quickly. Do not drive, because the roads may be destroyed by the tsunami.
Remember, knowledge and quick action are the most important things to keep you safe during a tsunami. Learning about tsunami safety can save your life and the lives of others.

Dear teachers and classmates,
Recently, our school held an activity about natural disaster safety. I learned a moving story about a boy named Ken, who saved his family and neighbors in a tsunami.
