Helping Others, Changing Yourself

Kaitlin Riffel started dreaming of ending poverty (贫困) when she was visiting her father. He worked for the homeless.
“I never realised there were people in the world who didn’t have a home or food before,” said Kaitlin, who is now sixteen. “I knew there was something I had to do about that.”
At the age of eight, she started raising money to build a playground. “It took me two years,” Kaitlin said. “We started small. We wanted to do something to make a difference.”

Taking care of old people seems an unpopular choice for many young people. However, this is what Gexi Wangmu, a 35-year-old woman from Barkam, Sichuan, decided to do at the age of 18.
Growing up as an orphan (孤儿) raised by those around her, Gexi Wangmu had always wanted to give back to society (社会). “Finding that Barkam’s nursing home was taking on new workers in 2008, I thought this was the best way to realize my dream,” she said.
