On May 22, 2011, Jodie Latham, a 15-year-old student from the United States, was at home when she noticed the sky was turning a strange, greenish-black colour. The air became very still and quiet. While she was watching the terrifying sky from her window, she remembered a lesson from her science class about tornadoes. Her teacher had said that a dark, greenish sky and a calm, still air could mean a tornado was coming.
Jodie immediately told her mother that they needed to go to their safe room. However, her mother didn’t think so at first because the weather alarm hadn’t gone off. But Jodie refused to wait. She was so worried that she insisted they take shelter right away.
Just as they were heading to the basement, Jodie made a quick decision. She quickly called several neighbours and sent text messages to her friends, shouting, “A tornado is coming! Get to your basement now!”
Then, the terrible sound came. It was like a train passing right over their house. The power went out. The storm was so loud, and it felt like forever.
Thankfully, when they came out, their house was still standing, though many in their town were damaged. Most importantly, because of Jodie’s knowledge and quick thinking, her family and many people in her community were all safe. Jodie became a local hero. Her story was even reported on the news later, showing how a student’s alertness can save lives.
