Mirra stood on the tennis court, holding her tennis racket nervously. She had just made two serving (发球) mistakes and lost the first game of the match. The crowd was silent as she walked to her chair, remembering how the 17-year-old used to cry after such mistakes. But not today.
Six months earlier, Mirra had played in another important match. When she missed an easy shot, she got very angry. She threw her racket and cried. She lost that match—not because of poor skills, but because she couldn’t control (控制) her feelings and stay calm.
“Mirra, look at this,” her coach said the next day, showing videos of LeBron James’ interviews. The basketball star spoke about staying calm under pressure. “The real competition,” he said, “is always in your mind first.”
Now, in this big final match, Mirra remembered those words. She took deep breaths and wiped the sweat from her face. Her opponent (对手), Clara, looked confident. But Mirra stayed focused.
The score was very close. At an important moment, Clara hit what looked like a winning shot. But Mirra ran fast and hit the ball back perfectly. The crowd cheered loudly! In the second half of the match, Mirra played even better. When Clara had chances to score, Mirra stayed strong. She served the ball so well that Clara couldn’t hit it back.
When Mirra won the final point, she fell to her knees—but this time she was smiling, not crying. After the match, she told reporters, “Before, my feelings controlled me. Do you know someone who drinks energy drinks before exams or sports games Maybe you’ve even tried one yourself. Those colorful bottles have become a common sight in stores and teenagers’ backpacks. They promise to “boost (提升) your energy” and “help you focus”, but are these drinks truly good for students
Energy drinks usually contain caffeine, sugar, vitamins, and other ingredients like taurine or guarana. The name “energy drink” comes from their ability to make people feel more awake and focused. In other words, they can boost your energy, at least for a short time.
Energy drinks first appeared in Japan in the 1960s. They became popular in the United States in the 1990s with the introduction of brands like Red Bull. Today, energy drinks are sold worldwide, and their market has grown rapidly. According to a market study, sales increased by 73% between 2018 and 2023.
Energy drinks are especially popular among teenagers and young adults. Many students drink them to stay focused while studying, and players use them to improve performance in sports. Social media and colorful advertisements (广告) also play a big role in making them popular. In some countries, energy drinks are among the top-selling beverages for teenagers.
Although energy drinks are popular, they can be harmful. High levels of caffeine and sugar can cause sleep problems, nervousness, and even heart problems. A 2024 study found that about a third of children aged 12 to 17 drink energy drinks regularly, which may lead to higher levels of anxiety and stress. Health experts warn that these drinks are not safe for children and teenagers.
Some health organizations are calling for stricter rules, such as banning (禁止) the sale of energy drinks to people under 18. Schools and health groups also encourage young people to choose healthier ways to stay energized, like getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet.
Energy drinks may provide a quick energy boost, but they come with risks. Experts suggest that young people should be careful when buying these drinks and not rely on (依赖) them too much. After all, good health and energy come from healthy habits, not just a can of sweet drink.

Have you ever thought about what astronauts eat when they’re in space What would they eat if they had to travel all the way to Mars (火星) A lot of the food astronauts eat is processed (加工过的) because it’s simple to eat and easy to take into space. However, some vitamins (维生素) can break down if the food is stored for a long time. People may have health problems if they eat processed food every day.
Growing fresh food in space might help astronauts stay healthy. It would also give them more food choices. Fresh vegetables grown on Earth have many nutrients (营养物质) that processed food do not have. However, we don’t know if vegetables grown in space are the same. Another worry is making sure that these vegetables don’t have the bacteria or fungi (细菌或真菌) that could make people sick.
Luckily, we have a plant growth room called Veggie on ISS (the International Space Station). We used Veggie to find out if it’s possible to grow nutritious and safe food in space.
We used Veggie to grow red lettuce (红生菜) over three years. We compared these (ISS-grown) vegetables to those grown at the same time on Earth. They were grown under the same conditions as on the ISS. We did research on the leaves and roots of all the lettuce plants. And we did not find any differences in nutrients between ISS-grown lettuce and Earth-grown produce. This means that it is possible to grow nutritious and safe food on ISS and astronauts should be able to eat vegetables grown in Veggie without worrying about getting sick.
Even though our lettuce is safe to eat, we still need to work out two problems. Firstly, there are more bacteria and fungi on ISS-grown lettuce. The wet environment in Veggie is probably the reason. Secondly, there are some differences in nutrients between the vegetables we grew in different years. Plants can change with too much or too little water, but it is hard to water plants in zero gravity (零重力) . Therefore, we need to make sure that growing environments are consistent in Veggie. Then astronauts can be confident about the nutrients in their food during their long stay in space.
29.The researchers grew red lettuce in Veggie to ______.
A.decide what kind of food astronauts should eat in space
B.find out how to keep astronauts safe and healthy in space
C.check if fresh vegetables can be processed safely in space
D.test if it’s possible to grow nutritious and safe food in space
30.What can we learn from the passage
A.Earth-grown vegetables are safer and have more nutrients.
B.ISS-grown lettuce of different years has different nutrients.
C.Scientists wanted to understand nutrients in processed food.
D.Fewer bacteria and fungi were found on ISS-grown vegetables.
31.What do the underlined words “are consistent” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Stay unchanged. B.Become special. C.Stay comfortable. D.Become enjoyable.
32.The last paragraph suggests that ______.
A.Veggie plays an important part in astronauts’ healthy eating
B.astronauts need to keep the plant growth room dry and clean
C.researchers didn’t find out what food could be grown in space
D.scientists need to do further research on planting food in space
四、任务型阅读
Thanks to social media, common foods like eggs, cheese, cucumbers are becoming superstars! In Iceland, cucumbers and a certain kind of cheese are so popular that stores even run out of them! Why Because people watch cooking videos online and want to make the same dishes! As you can see, social media is changing our cooking and diet.
People have always used new ways to share cooking. Long ago, a French chef started to write cookbooks with pictures to teach others French dishes. In the 1960s, Julia used TV to make cooking fun. She showed how people could make fancy meals at home. Maybe that was the origin (起源) of sharing cooking through electronic media.
Nowadays, cooking is one of the most loved topics online, especially during holidays. Many people make videos about cooking, and the videos make cooking fun to share. Some online food videos can even get millions of views. According to a recent (近期的) study, food cooking is the 4th most popular topic online!
The Internet can turn anyone into a cooking star! You don’t need to be a fantastic chef to get famous. Nick, a 28-year-old Harvard university student often posts cooking videos online. And his cooking videos have 21 million fans online! Why does social media make us care so much about food The reason is simple: everyone eats! More importantly, videos teach better than books. Words like “cook until golden” can be confusing, but videos show clearly what to do.
Today’s online cooks don’t just share how to cook food—they share a lifestyle. What you eat and watch says something about you. A social media expert (专家) says good cooking stars “Listen to what viewers want”. Some want fun, others want to learn or try new foods through others.
So next time you see an Internet-famous recipe, how about searching for videos about it and starting to cook the dish yourself You might also become a famous cook.
