① PUA means “Pick-up Artist”. It started for people who used clever ways to influence their interactions (交流) with others, especially between lovers. This idea develops, and now it also means people use tricks to control others in the workplace (工作场所) and online. It’s very helpful to know about PUA because it can deeply influence how you feel about your self-improvement. Here are some common actions to be careful of.
② Sometimes people who use PUA tricks criticize a lot. One of the tricks is that they might tell you that you’re always doing things wrong. It is just a way to make you feel sorry about yourself instead of helping you improve. They may also try to make you stay away from your friends and family. This makes you depend on them, and gives them more control over you.
③ Another trick is called gaslighting (煤气灯效应). For example, you remember something clearly, but they keep saying it didn’t happen. They hope you aren’t sure what you know is true.
④ To avoid PUA, there are several steps you can take. First, learn to tell what healthy friendships and relationships look like. Being confident is also important because it will not be so easy for others to trick you. Besides, you shouldn’t be scared to say no when something feels wrong. What’s more, talking to someone you trust like a teacher can be very useful.

③ Thousands of years ago, a big earthquake hit Helike, Greece. Buildings came down. Many people were hurt. But there was something amazing. The city’s animals acted strangely days before the earthquake. Mice and snakes ran from the city in groups. Did they know an earthquake was coming In 1975, about one million people had to leave their hometown, Haicheng, Liaoning Province. Why They believed a disaster was coming. They thought this, in part, because of animals’ strange actions. Just days later, a large earthquake hit the city. Experts said over 150,000 could lose their lives if people stayed in the city at that time.
④ Animals seem to be pretty good at making predictions about disasters. But it doesn’t stop there! Some of them even seem to sense small changes in the weather before they happen. Bees can find places before it rains. Farmers say they can tell a big storm is coming when their cows lie down. Can animals really tell the future
⑤ Experts say it’s impossible that animals can know the future. However, they might hear or feel the earthquake before people do. Even though scientists don’t show animals have this ability and animals’ predictions aren’t always right, it’s not bad to pay attention to the animals.

七、阅读理解
On August 12th, 2024, a 20-year-old student from the UK fell over while taking part in a summer exchange program at a university in Suzhou. After falling, his breathing was weak and he lost consciousness. Someone called 120 at once.
Yang Xiaoping, from Suzhou’s emergency centre, received the call and quickly decided that the student needed CPR. Through an online first aid platform, Yang and another doctor taught someone who was on the scene to perform CPR on the student.
Once the ambulance arrived, the student was connected to an electronic CPR device on the way to the hospital. After arriving at the hospital, the emergency team continued CPR for seven more minutes until they detected the student’s heartbeat and pulse. Then he was sent to the intensive care unit. Chinese people celebrate it to remember and honor their ancestors (祖先). This year, it falls on April 4. Tomb Sweeping Day became a public holiday in the Chinese mainland in 2008. People have one day off for that day.
On this day, families bring flowers, food and wine to the grave sites (墓地) of their ancestors. They place cakes, fruits in front of the graves and some may burn joss paper, as money for the dead. After that, they sweep the tombs and cherish (怀念) the memories of their dead family members.
Tomb Sweeping Day gives us a chance to show respect to our ancestors and family members who have passed away and show that we miss them. This tradition shows that family values are an important part of Chinese culture.

Dear Emily,
I’m sorry to hear about your family problems.
It’s normal to feel lonely and upset when family members argue. First, try talking to your parents calmly. Tell them how their arguing makes you feel. Second, discuss with your brother about sharing TV time fairly. Maybe you can make a reasonable schedule together. Also, doing fun activities with your family, like playing games or taking walks, can greatly improve your relationship.
Remember, communication is key to solving problems. I hope things get better soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
